Chapter 296 The Exchange of Rings
The Medici couple arrived at the hospital with bags full of gifts. They heard that Grandma was still being rescued in the operating room. When they arrived at the door of the operating room, they heard the sorrowful and desperate sobbing of a girl from inside.
This voice clearly belonged to Abella. Both of them were stunned. They looked at Dr. Smith, who stood silently at the door without saying a word, and couldn't help but ask, "Dr. Smith, Grandma...?"
"She just passed away." Dr. Smith stood at the door, looking at Abella crying her heart out inside, with Phillipe holding her tightly, letting her cry as much as she needed.
If he could, he would comfort her like this too. But his identity destined him to only stand on the sidelines, watching her suffer without even having the qualifications to comfort her. Dr. Smith's eyes also welled up with tears, and his voice carried deep concern.
"Abella fought for her for eleven hours. She did her best."
Eleven hours, she wouldn't let Grandma leave her hands if there was any way. But Grandma's body truly had no chance of recovery. Mrs. Medici was struck dumb, dropping the things in her hands to the ground.
Mr. Medici quickly dropped what he was holding to support her, asking, "Are you alright?"
Mrs. Medici's heart ached, and she also became sorrowful. She didn't expect that she wouldn't get to meet Grandma. They had arrived too late! She knew that Abella must be feeling so devastated!
"Barbara, Barbara..." Just then, an elderly figure rushed out of the elevator, stumbling towards the operating room. He exerted all his strength, pushing through the crowd and forcefully opening the door of the operating room, only to be greeted by a lifeless body.
He could barely stand, if it weren't for Dr. Smith at the door supporting him, he would have collapsed.
"Barbara..." This sorrowful cry carried the old man's mournful tone and agony.
That morning, he suddenly felt uneasy. He had a premonition and feared something would happen to Barbara. The whole morning, he couldn't get through to Abella on the phone. He felt so uncomfortable, so he sent his people to check on Barbara.
People went to the hospital to inquire and learned that Abella was performing surgery on Barbara. Thinking it was the previously arranged one, they patiently waited for news.
Once he felt better and regained his composure, he arrived at the hospital but received the devastating news that this surgery was not the one originally scheduled. Barbara's condition suddenly worsened last night, and Abella had been trying to save her for eleven hours straight, but it was in vain. She passed away.
He couldn't believe it. Just yesterday, they had celebrated her birthday together, with smiles on their faces. How could Barbara's condition worsen so suddenly last night, and the rescue efforts prove ineffective?
He didn't know how he managed to walk to Barbara's side, finding it so unbelievable. He stared at her, subconsciously trying to feel her breath, but there was none. His heart twisted painfully, almost taking his breath away.
It took him a while, before his trembling hand lightly, touched Barbara's hand. It was cold, devoid of the normal warmth of a living person.
It was then he suddenly cried out in anguish, "Barbara!"
Why did she leave like this? Why didn't she wait for him, allowing him to see her one last time before leaving? Wasn't she the one who cherished Abella as her beloved granddaughter? How could she let go of her beloved granddaughter.
What happened exactly? What happened last night??
"Barbara, Barbara--" Mr. Walker held onto her cold body, never would he have thought that this would be the only time he could hold her. He cried in agony and desperation. Never, in his wildest dreams, did he imagine that yesterday's birthday would be their final meeting.
The Medici couple, who had arrived at the door, saw this scene and their eyes turned red. Why did it happen so suddenly?
As far as they knew, Abella had always provided the best medicine for Grandma, and the surgery should have gone smoothly this morning. Why did such an accident occur?
Abella, silently shedding tears on the side, had initially thought that Grandma and Mr. Walker might have had a beautiful future together. At the very least, Grandma could have lived for another ten or twenty years without any issue.
What happened last night? With the medication Grandma had been taking and her physical condition, it was impossible for her to suffer a sudden heart attack that would lead to heart failure.
Thinking about the three-centimeter-long rupture, it felt as if someone was tearing Abella's heart apart, causing a suffocating pain. She had a sudden thought, the surveillance footage! She had installed surveillance in Grandma's ward.
Yesterday, after celebrating Grandma's birthday, she returned to work and checked the footage a few times. Grandma seemed to be sleeping peacefully, so she continued with her work.
After finishing work, she had dinner and took a walk with Phillipe. When they got home, she checked the surveillance again, and Grandma was already asleep. She thought, as usual, Grandma would sleep soundly until morning, so she took a shower and started taking care of her personal matters.
She thought Grandma was preparing for the surgery the next day, so she went to bed early. Could something have happened last night that she was unaware of? Thinking this, Abella wiped her tears, pushed Phillipe away, and left the operating room.
"Abella?" Mrs. Medici saw her coming out of the operating room and was worried that she might do something foolish.
"Mrs. Medici, don't worry, I'm here for everything she needs." Phillipe comforted Mrs. Medici and followed Abella's footsteps.
In the operating room, only Mr. Walker remained, holding Barbara and crying in grief.
...
In the hotel, most of the guests had finished eating, there had already been seven or eight performances. The host took the stage, excitedly picking up the microphone.
"Now, please welcome our protagonists of the day, Remy and Isla, to the stage! Let's give them a round of applause!"
All the guests applauded. Today, the Johnson family had spent a lot of money. Not only was the venue beautifully decorated like a dream, but each dish was extravagantly expensive. The invited performers and comedy groups were all well-known, and even the host was a famous one.
"Let us witness their engagement ring exchange with the warmest applause and sincerest blessings!" As soon as the host's words fell, thunderous applause erupted throughout the venue.
Remy smiled and took out a ring box from his expensive suit. Upon opening it, there was a dazzling one-carat diamond ring. Isla didn't expect him to genuinely show his intentions to marry her, and she blushed with shyness.
The host continued, "Now, let the groom put the ring on the bride's finger first, and let's encourage them with applause."
Amidst the applause of over six hundred people in the audience, Remy took out the ring and placed it on Isla's ring finger.
"Isla, it's an honor to be engaged to you."
