Chapter 198 Agreeing to Meet Tomorrow
Maria also didn't dare to look at Abella and kept her head down while attending to Lola.
"Have Grandpa and Grandma been feeling better recently?" After Steven served Abella some food, his gaze turned towards their parents.
He had been busy with the affairs of the group's headquarters or rushing back home to accompany his sister. It had been a week since he came back, and he hadn't visited their grandparents yet.
"On the day of the awards ceremony, your grandmother woke up once, but then fell back into a coma," Mrs. Medici said with heartache. "We don't know when she will wake up again."
"'What caused it?' Abella asked softly. She had heard that their grandparents were not in good health, but she hadn't asked for specific details.
"It was a month ago when they went mountain climbing, and Grandma accidentally fell. Grandpa tried to catch her and fell down several flights of stairs on the spot. They both lost consciousness and were in a deep coma when they arrived at the hospital."
Mrs. Medici still vividly remembers that day.
"The CT scan showed that Grandma had a skull fracture, cerebral contusion, and multiple fractures throughout her body. Grandpa was in a worse condition than her because, while trying to protect Grandma, he not only suffered multiple fractures but also had fluid accumulation in his left chest cavity, intracranial bleeding, and hematoma. Both of them were at a high risk of disability and death."
Mrs. Medici recalls that day with lingering fear, "During the examination, Grandpa showed signs of shock, and Grandma had acute respiratory failure. It really frightened us!"
At that time, their vital signs were extremely unstable, and the bleeding was deep, making surgery inappropriate. Therefore, they were transferred to the ICU.
"They have been lying in the ICU until now. Grandma has regained consciousness twice, but Grandpa... hasn't woken up even once!"
Mrs. Medici's mood became heavy as she continued, "In addition to a series of complications, the doctor said that intracranial bleeding caused significant damage to their central nervous systems. Both of them are experiencing symptoms of coughing and difficulty expectorating, so the doctor also performed a tracheotomy on them and provided assisted ventilation."
The symptoms sound severe, and a slight mishap could cost their lives.
Mr. Medici also spoke with a heavy tone, "Over the past month, the entire ICU team has overcome numerous difficulties, ranging from respiratory failure, shock, respiratory tract infections, aneAurora to electrolyte imbalances. Every day brings new challenges. Although we don't know when they will fully wake up, we have held onto hope."
"Is it at NYU Medical Center?" Abella asked next.
"No."
Although NYU Medical Center is the best public hospital in New York and is renowned for its cardiac treatment, it lacks the attentiveness of private hospitals in patient care.
"We have a hospital in New York too, called Sunrise Hospital, where Grandpa and Grandma are receiving treatment," Mr. Medici explained. "Every day, professionals help them with basic and specialized care, communicate with them, provide positive psychological suggestions, and assist in their early awakening."
"How are your grandparents doing?" Steven asked solemnly.
They haven't shown any improvement so far. Your uncle contacted top experts abroad, and they have been receiving treatment abroad," Mr. Medici replied.
Steven knew that the situation for his grandparents wasn't much better than for Grandpa and Grandma, making him feel even more burdened.
"Okay, let's not talk about these things during dinner," Mr. Medici said, fearing that the atmosphere would become too heavy. He picked up a pair of chopsticks and picked some food for Abella, saying, "Come, eat more. Abella, you've been back for almost a month, right?"
"Yes," Abella obediently held her bowl and accepted the food her father handed to her, looking well-behaved.
"It seems like the college entrance exam results are coming soon."
"Has it come out?"
"You can check the day after tomorrow."
"That's great! Do you have any universities in mind to apply for?" Mr. Medici smiled warmly, "Let me make this clear first. I will fully support any university you wish to attend! Of course, if you don't want to go to college, I won't stop you either. It's all up to your happiness."
"Thank you, Dad."
Lola beside them was deeply jealous!
Steven looked at the girl next to him with gentle eyes. "Nervous?"
Abella thought to herself, what's there to be nervous about for the college entrance exam??
If her big brother knew her level, he wouldn't even ask this question... but to not worry her big brother, she obediently replied, "It's okay."
Steven couldn't sense any nervousness or anxiety in her eyes, so she must be confident about her results.
"I’m leaving the country the day after tomorrow. After work tomorrow, shall I take you to visit Grandma and Grandpa?"
This was his last deadline to procrastinate!
France had been urging him all along, and tomorrow would be his younger sister's last day. Thinking of this, he felt a bit reluctant.
Although Mr. Medici and Mrs. Medici also wanted the elderly to see their granddaughter, the two of them had been in a coma, which was why they hadn't arranged for them to meet Abella.
A sly light flashed in Lola's eyes. If Grandma and Grandpa didn't wake up, Abella's visit would be in vain, and she wouldn't gain the elders' approval. It would be pointless.
But if Grandma and Grandpa suddenly woke up and saw Abella in an excited state, their bodies couldn't handle too much excitement or joy. If anything happened, Abella would be the culprit!
The Medici family would never keep someone who caused the death of Grandma and Grandpa.
Such a good show must not be missed!
Thinking like this, she softly and weakly spoke, "Dad, Mom, big brother, I also want to go visit Grandma and Grandpa."
"Then we should all go, shouldn't we?" Mr. Medici thought to himself. If the whole family appeared together, maybe the elderly would hear their voices and suddenly wake up?
"Abella, I'll come pick you up tomorrow afternoon," Steven touched Abella's head. "Let's eat first and continue our conversation. The food is getting cold."
"Okay." Abella thought, someone is getting jealous again. He's been ignored a lot lately...
Fortunately, they have a hospital at home, where Grandpa and Grandma can recover properly. If it were an ordinary family, with daily expenses of twenty thousand, supporting someone for over a month would have bankrupted them long ago.
Dr. Smith had said before that he had seen through human nature a long time ago, because he had witnessed countless life and death situations in the emergency room. Some family members looked at their loved ones being admitted to the ICU and immediately wanted to remove the tubes and give up treatment... Some did it because they couldn't afford it, some did it out of impatience...
In any case, human nature was exposed there, which couldn't help but make people feel sorrowful.
"What are you thinking, Abella?" Steven handed her another bowl of soup. He saw that the young girl had been calm earlier, but now she was lost in thought. Could it be about worrying about her exam results?
After all, she was still a child, no matter how well she disguised it, she was still young.
Thinking this way, Steven gently spoke, "Don't worry."
