Chapter 756 No Evidence

David was stretching like a lazy cat before he finally dragged himself downstairs. Just as he hit the bottom step, he heard Lola sobbing her heart out and picked up the pace. When he got there, he saw Lola's eyes all puffy and red.

"What's up?" he asked, totally baffled.

He glanced at poor Lola and then at Bonnie, who was sitting there like she owned the place. 'How the heck is Bonnie bullying Lola?' he thought.

"Lola, you're finally up? What's with the cast on your hand? Bonnie, what the hell happened?"

Lola's tears started flowing like a river. "Grandpa, do you really think I'd hurt you? Last night, I had no clue what was going on. Out of nowhere, I got this crazy stomachache. I told everyone in the car I needed a bathroom break. After I got out, everything went nuts, and I started seeing things."

Lola kept crying, looking all pitiful. "I seriously don't remember a thing after that. If the servants hadn't told me, I wouldn't believe I did all that weird stuff last night. I'm covered in bruises and have no idea how they got there. How could this be about drugging?"

"Drugging? What are you talking about? Bonnie, are you saying Lola drugged herself?" David asked, scratching his head. "Why would she do something that dumb? It wouldn't help her at all."

"What if she meant to drug someone else but ended up screwing herself over?" Bonnie said, ice-cold.

Lola shot back, "Does Aunt Bonnie really think I'm that evil? Last night, we were all having a blast. Who would I have drugged? Why would I hurt you? Why does Aunt Bonnie think I'd do something so nasty? Have the past eighteen years made Aunt Bonnie think I'm a bad person?"

Just then, Vanessa rushed in, looking all confused. "What's going on? Why are you guys yelling so early?"

"If Aunt Bonnie likes Abella more because she's back in the family and doesn't want to deal with me, fine, just kick me out. But why accuse me of this? I'm a victim here! I'm all banged up and embarrassed in front of my boyfriend. I feel like crap, and now Aunt Bonnie's blaming me," Lola cried, clinging to Vanessa.

Vanessa had never seen Lola this wrecked, hugging her and bawling. The Harris family always spoiled Lola; no one could stand to see her cry.

"What the heck is happening? Bonnie, do you think Lola tried to drug us but messed up and drugged herself? Is that it? Do you have any proof?" Vanessa asked.

Bonnie had zilch. She was just trying to mess with Lola's head to see if she'd slip up.

But maybe Lola heard Vanessa coming and turned on the waterworks, making Bonnie even more suspicious.

'Cause if Lola was really innocent, she wouldn't freak out like this or need someone to back her up.

Lola's drama seemed like a cover-up.

"No proof," Bonnie admitted, but she kept staring at Lola like she was trying to read her mind.

"Since there's no proof," Vanessa said, at a loss for words. The whole thing was super weird, but without evidence, they couldn't just blame Lola. What if they were wrong?

"If Aunt Bonnie thinks someone’s out to get our family, then I beg Aunt Bonnie, Grandma, and Grandpa to dig deep and clear my name!" Lola's tears kept falling, but her voice was strong. "I might not be the Medici family's blood, but I'd never hurt you! I'm not heartless. You guys are my world!"

Vanessa and David felt a pang of guilt. They really might've wronged Lola!

Her face was so innocent, tears in her eyes. They'd never seen her so upset and mad before!

It couldn't be her. Why would she ask for an investigation if she was guilty?

"Lola, Bonnie was just throwing ideas around, no harm meant," Vanessa said, trying to soothe her. "She just wants to get to the bottom of this and explain it to everyone. Maybe she came off a bit harsh, but don't take it to heart. Not just Bonnie, your grandpa and I will also have people look into this. We won't let anyone who wants to harm us get away! If you're innocent, we'll clear your name."

"Thanks, Grandma," Lola said, smiling through her tears. "Grandma, my hand hurts."

She showed Vanessa her hand, which was all bandaged up, one palm in a cast.

"Philip, how bad is Lola's injury?" Vanessa asked, worried.

"Just some minor fractures, she needs about two weeks of rest. I've already given her meds. If there's nothing else, I'll head out." Philip felt awkward, caught in the middle of this family drama.

"Thanks. Someone, show Dr. West out."

After Philip left, Lola kept playing the innocent card with Vanessa and David, talking about last night and apologizing over and over, saying she drank too much and didn't remember a thing, and it wasn't on purpose.

Bonnie finally got why Abella didn't bring up the drugging thing last night—no evidence.

Talking without proof would just make people half-believe, not fully buy it.

Bonnie grabbed her tablet and headed back to her room, just in time to get a report from her subordinate.

"Mrs. Harris, I couldn't find any info about the drug you asked me to look into in Verdania. It might take more time to get any news."

"Expand the search to the surrounding countries, especially Libertya. Dig deep." Bonnie was more convinced this had something to do with Lola.

"Yes, Mrs. Harris."

In the living room, after comforting Vanessa and David, Lola remembered what Maria had said, and a look of relief flashed in her eyes.

Maria had said she handled it cleanly and wouldn't be found out.

No matter how much David, Vanessa, Bonnie, or Abella investigated, it would be useless.

Because the person who made the drug was already dead!

Dead men tell no tales!

Even if someone found a link between Maria and the drug maker, there was no proof that Lola put the drug in Abella's cup, and Lola had no direct motive.

This involved a lot of people, maybe even an organization. It wasn't something Abella could figure out!

Thinking this, Lola's lips curled into a sly smile.
