Chapter 954 No Way
Abella's words left everyone in shock. Could Jacob and Henry have been in on something together?
"That drug is pretty common on the black market, and it has a strong smell. Jacob's a small-time leader in an organization, so he should know what it does. But he got caught by Henry's guys? A small-time leader, caught by a regular bodyguard? Doesn't that seem fishy to you?"
"Are you saying Jacob might've let himself get caught on purpose? When he walked into Henry's place and smelled the drug, he knew Lola wasn't there. He realized it was a trap set by Henry, but he still went in. Does that mean he wanted to save Lola, even if it meant sacrificing himself?" Beckett speculated.
"That's one way to look at it," Abella continued. "Another thing is, Jacob actually died from a slow-acting poison. We figured he got to Henry's place around noon or early afternoon, but he took the poison in the morning."
So, he took the poison before going to Henry's place.
Everyone was stunned.
"So, maybe Dad was right. Jacob knew Lola wasn't at Henry's place and had taken the poison beforehand to avoid suffering at our hands. Since it's a slow-acting poison, it gave Henry enough time to save Lola and clear his name. With Henry off the hook, our family wouldn't go after him, and Henry could take care of Lola and keep her safe."
"But Jacob doesn't seem like the type to just end his life like that," Steven cut in. "His wife died, and he didn't get revenge. Lola is his only family left. Wouldn't he want to stick around, see her get married and have kids?"
"Steven, remember the hospital fire? If Jacob knew who the real mastermind was, isn't it possible that the mastermind was scared Jacob would betray him to save his own skin, so he forced Jacob to take the slow-acting poison?"
So, Jacob didn't take the poison willingly; he was forced by the mastermind?
Kimberly listened to Abella's analysis, confused. "But Jacob's biggest leverage is Lola. With Henry protecting her, what else could he be worried about?"
"Maria mentioned at the abandoned building that the mastermind is really powerful. Could it be that even Henry isn't a match for him? So, Jacob sacrificed himself to make sure Lola was safe and Henry was happy?"
Only the dead could keep secrets.
Jacob's death might have convinced the mastermind to spare Lola's life.
"Who is this mastermind?" Kimberly wondered out loud. Over the years, she couldn't think of anyone they had wronged so badly, nor anyone with that much power!
Except for the Bourbon family, but they would never do something like this!
Who would go to such lengths to hurt them?
Eighteen years, and they still didn't let them go.
"What did Jacob talk about with Henry? Could he have left instructions? Maybe Jacob told Henry who the mastermind is? Should we ask Henry? But would he even tell us?" Beckett's hope was quickly dashed by Abella's calm response.
"He doesn't know."
Everyone was taken aback, even Kimberly was puzzled. "Abella, how do you know Henry doesn't know who the mastermind is?"
"He called me earlier, begging me to save Lola. If he knew, he would have used that information as leverage."
"He even begged you for Lola." Kimberly was furious. "But Jacob isn't dumb. He must have left something for Lola to protect herself. There has to be something we're missing."
Just then, Abella's phone buzzed with a few messages.
Henry: [Abella, before Jacob went to the Medici Manor, he gave me his personal phone for safekeeping. He hoped that after saving Lola, I would give the phone to her.]
Henry: [I found your contact information in his phone without Lola's consent. Although I don't know who planned the hospital fire, I suspect this phone holds the secrets you want.]
Henry: [Maybe even information about his organization.]
Henry: [I'll trade this phone for Lola's life, okay?]
Perhaps fearing Abella wouldn't save Lola, Henry sent another message.
Henry: [Jacob's death wasn't my doing. I swear on my life, I had nothing to do with it.]
Seeing Abella staring at her phone, everyone crowded around to ask.
"Who sent the message? What's going on?" Kimberly asked, concerned.
"It's a message from Henry. It confirms our suspicions. Jacob left something behind before he died—a phone, meant for Lola."
"So, the phone has the secrets we want? I'll go talk to him," Beckett said. "If he won't hand it over, I'll take it by force if I have to!"
For the first time in his life, Beckett was ready to be "unreasonable".
If it weren't for the fire, Abella wouldn't have been mistakenly taken, wouldn't have suffered all these years, and they wouldn't have raised Lola mistakenly, enduring everything that followed.
So, he was determined to uncover the mastermind!
"If Henry dared to tell us about the phone, it means he's not afraid of us stealing it," Abella analyzed. "If he wanted to hide it, it would be hard for us to find it quickly."
"Then, Abella, why did he tell you about the phone? What's his motive?" Kimberly pressed.
"He wants me to save Lola."
As soon as Abella said this, everyone responded in unison, "No way."
Beckett said, "After everything she's done to you, how can you save her? It's a miracle we haven't killed her!"
Kimberly chimed in, "Even if you save her, she won't be grateful. She might even think you caused her suffering."
Steven also said, "There's no need to save her. Henry shouldn't have asked."
Dennis said, "She's lucky to be alive this long. Is she asking for trouble?"
