Chapter 998 There Are Always People Better Than You
Just then, something fell out of Luke's pocket.
Abella and Toby both saw it—a small folding knife dropped onto the grass.
Luke glanced back at them, quickly picked it up, and shoved it into his pocket, looking a bit flustered.
"Hold up!" Toby stepped forward. "You dropped something. Let's see it!"
Margaret's face showed a flicker of tension, but she quickly regained her composure. "We asked him to carry that."
"Yeah, Mr. Medici and Mrs. Medici don't have bodyguards with them today, so I carry this for protection. Don't you guys have weapons on you?" Luke retorted.
Toby did have a weapon, but it wasn't a folding knife.
His gut told him that this driver, Luke, was really suspicious.
"It's Christmas, and everyone here is family. You're carrying a knife and trespassing." Toby turned to Abella. "Ms. Medici, I request to detain him! He's definitely up to something!"
"I've said many times, I didn't know this area was off-limits. If I had known, I would've stayed far away," Luke said, sounding a bit aggrieved as he turned to Margaret. "Mrs. Medici, I really can't hold it any longer."
"Then go ahead."
The speaker was Abella. Not only Luke but even Toby was taken aback.
Abella was just letting him go?
Margaret smiled. "Abella is so kind. Since she said so, hurry up and go."
Luke hurried off, but halfway, he looked back at them, his eyes filled with unease.
"Ms. Medici," Toby said urgently. "That guy is definitely suspicious."
"I can see Toby still isn't feeling reassured. How about I have Luke come back in a bit so you guys can ask him whatever you want? No matter how you want to handle things, I'll stay out of it. Margaret said.
"Aunt Margaret, you're joking! Toby's just being extra careful since he's got so much responsibility, but I trust you. No need to bring Luke back." Abella replied.
Hearing that, Margaret was a bit taken aback. "Alright then, I'll head out."
"Take care, Aunt Margaret," Abella said.
Once Margaret had walked away, Toby couldn't help but say, "Ms. Medici, I really think there's something off about that person. Mrs. Margaret Medici is just covering for them!"
"Who's suspicious?" A steady voice suddenly spoke.
"Mr. Steven Medici?" Toby greeted him with a bow.
Abella also obediently called out, "Steven."
Steven looked at her with a gentle gaze. "Who were you saying is suspicious? Who is Aunt Margaret covering for?"
He handed Abella a cup of milk tea prepared by the chef.
The chef had made several cups of milk tea earlier, and Steven had taken one of Abella's favorite flavors, searching for her until he finally found her here.
Toby explained the situation to him.
After listening, Steven turned to Abella. "What do you think?"
"Aunt Margaret said she did a background check on the driver, Luke, and found nothing wrong."
"I asked him to go to the restroom, and as he hurried away, a folding knife fell out of his pocket. He then deliberately looked back at us before picking it up in a panic."
"If he were here to kill Jacob, he'd have to be a skilled assassin, right? He wouldn't easily expose his identity or his weapon in broad daylight."
Steven nodded. "Your analysis makes sense."
"But Luke is still very suspicious," Toby insisted. "Something about him feels off!"
"Did you get a good look?" Abella asked Toby. "That folding knife fell out of his clothes. What kind of pocket lets a folding knife easily fall out? You're wearing a suit too. Do your pockets, even with their slanted openings, often let things like your phone or keys fall out?"
Toby shook his head. "No, they don't."
Abella added, "Exactly. So, when the knife fell out, it wasn't an accident. He wanted us to see it."
"He gave us plenty of time to notice the knife on the grass before he picked it up in a panic. Why would he want to deepen our suspicion of him?"
"Why?" Blake chimed in, his face full of curiosity.
The chef had made milk tea and snacks earlier, and Blake had brought some snacks, looking for Abella. He hadn't expected to walk in on them analyzing a "big case."
Abella had heard his footsteps earlier. Since he was family, she didn't mind discussing it openly. "Whether he dropped the knife on purpose or looked back at us deliberately, he was deepening our suspicion of him. He did this for one reason: he wants us to investigate him."
Toby looked puzzled. "Why would someone want to be investigated?"
Blake also asked, "Why?"
"Aunt Margaret repeatedly defended him, which also deepened our suspicion. The more she insisted he was innocent, the more likely we'd investigate him."
Blake nodded. "And then?"
"First, whose man is he?" Abella asked.
Blake immediately replied, "Aunt Margaret's driver."
"If he's suspicious, doesn't that indirectly prove Aunt Margaret is suspicious too?"
Blake nodded. "Exactly."
"If we suspect Aunt Margaret, we investigate Luke and find his background clean, proving Aunt Margaret wasn't lying. Wouldn't we then think we were wrong to suspect Aunt Margaret and her driver?"
"That makes sense," Blake agreed.
"Once we prove Aunt Margaret is innocent, we'd shift our focus to other people and stop paying special attention to Aunt Margaret. So, if I'm right, Aunt Margaret might have thought we were suspecting her and her husband in the living room earlier. That's why she staged this act. Whether Luke is suspicious or not, Aunt Margaret's actions are a classic case of protesting too much."
"Abella, you're so smart!" Blake finally understood. "Aunt Margaret must think this clears her of suspicion, so she guided us to investigate her driver, Luke. But she doesn't know your sharp mind sees through it all. So, she really is suspicious? Could she be involved in what happened years ago?"
Abella and Steven nodded simultaneously, saying in unison, "It's possible."
If Margaret hadn't done this, they wouldn't have suspected her so quickly.
Now, it was really necessary to investigate her thoroughly.
Not the driver, Luke, but Margaret and George.
