Chapter 466 Interrogation
Abella looked at Sam, who immediately fell silent.
"The antidote for that virus in Africa, did Abella develop it?" Winston asked.
Now, it was Winston's turn to be shocked. The virus had caused havoc in Africa, claiming many lives and a few cases had appeared domestically as well.
When fear was spreading, the antidote emerged, reportedly researched day and night by Professor Grey and his team at Stanford University. Winston had taken note of that news and had been impressed by Professor Grey's capabilities, as no one else in the world seemed to have a solution.
"Are you the Professor Grey from Stanford University?" Winston said, looking at the girl beside him in disbelief.
"Yes, that's our leader! Our leader completed all her studies at Stanford two years ago. The professors who once guided her felt inferior and willingly became her students. She is now a distinguished professor at Stanford, one of the 66 influential figures in the university's history!"
Abella glanced at Sam and said, "You can go now."
Sam immediately covered his mouth, indicating that he wouldn't speak.
"Then why are you still at the Medical University?" Winston asked as they walked.
"That's because Principal Wilson of the Medical University needs our leader to cooperate in conducting experiments," Sam said, covering his mouth again, his sincere gaze indicating he wouldn't know more.
Abella was speechless.
Winston hadn't expected Abella to have so many identities, her headquarters as mysterious as she was.
As Abella led him into the side building, the two subordinates guarding the entrance respectfully called out, "Leader."
Abella nodded slightly. If they were only conducting experiments here, why did they need so many people armed and on guard? What was the identity of these people?
"Abella, who are these people?" Winston asked.
"They are the guards," Sam mouthed soundlessly.
Abella led Winston into the side building and down to the basement. There were several empty rooms with walls made of iron bars, resembling giant cages, devoid of any occupants, with a cold wind seeping through.
As they passed, their footsteps echoed in the air, and motion sensor lights flickered on, creating an eerie atmosphere. In the innermost room, four people, the ones caught earlier, were locked up, still unconscious and sprawled on the ground.
"Are they related to Nicole's disappearance?" Winston's heart was in his throat.
"Yes," Abella replied. Before Winston could react, someone brought over two chairs, and Abella sat down, her voice calm. "Winston, have a seat."
Winston complied, and Abella instructed her subordinate, "Wake them up."
"Yes!" Sam pressed a switch on the wall, and the ceiling of the iron cage immediately released a downpour of ice-cold water as if caught in a storm.
At the same time, a transparent shield rose from the ground, effectively blocking the splashing water.
Abella and Winston remained completely dry, not a single drop touching them. Inside the cage, the four people were drenched, awakening from the bone-chilling cold, realizing they were not only bound together but also had their hoods removed.
The transparent shield retracted into the ground, and Winston couldn't help but ask, "Who are you? Why do you say Nicole is a traitor? Where is Nicole?"
Earlier in the car, Abella had briefly explained the situation to him, and he knew Nicole's disappearance was anything but simple.
"What do you know? Tell me!" Winston shouted.
Everything related to Nicole made Winston unable to stay calm. One of the subordinates went into the iron room and removed the rag from one of the person's mouth. As soon as they did, the person attempted to bite their tongue and end their life, prompting the subordinate to quickly stuff the rag back into their mouth and deliver a few hard punches.
"Is there an intent to deceive? Boss, in my opinion, we should strip them naked and see if they have any gang tattoos or something," the subordinate suggested.
Strip them naked?
The eyes of the four individuals widened. They could be killed, but they refused to be humiliated. Being forced to stand there, completely exposed to each other, was worse than subjecting them to torture.
"Go ahead," Abella said, rising to her feet and placing her hand on Winston's shoulder. "I'll be back in a moment. Feel free to ask if you have any questions."
After Abella left the basement, her phone vibrated once again. It was a call from Philippe. In the midst of her busyness, she had forgotten about him.
Abella swiped the screen to answer, and Philippe's voice came through the other end, "Abella, you're still not home?"
It was already 9 p.m.
"I'll be there soon."
"What have you been busy with all day?"
"I'm just handling some matters," Abella replied softly. "I went out with Winston earlier."
"What did you and Winston do?"
Abella couldn't mention that she had apprehended a few people, and it was related to Winston's missing girlfriend.
If Philippe found out that she had taken risks and confronted several armed individuals, he would surely be angry.
"Just keeping Winston company," she replied.
"What have you been busy with today? I called a few times, but you only replied with two words."
"I had a small task to complete."
Helping Winston find his girlfriend could also be considered a task.
"Is it dangerous?"
"Not dangerous, just time-consuming," Abella added.
"I see."
Abella had been gone for a day. If he hadn't received her message, he would have sent someone to find out where she was.
"Is it done?" Philippe asked with concern.
"Yes."
Only by awaiting the confessions of those few individuals will there be leads.
"Are you hungry? Did you have dinner tonight?"
With this inquiry, Abella remembered she had yet to eat dinner. She had been lying in ambush at Nicole's house for a long time in order to catch those few people.
To prevent Philippe from worrying, Abella falsely claimed, "I've already eaten."
"I'll send some supper over later for you, Winston, and your family," Philippe said softly. "Is there anything you'd like to eat? Barbecue? Desserts?"
"I'm not hungry; I don't want to eat," Abella replied. She didn't know how long she would be busy later, so she said, "I'll take a shower and go to bed when I get home. You should get some rest, too."
"Good, see you tomorrow."
"Good, see you tomorrow."
"You should go home early and not stay out too late," Philippe added. "Send me a message when you get home."
"Okay." Seeing that Philippe didn't ask too many questions, Abella breathed a sigh of relief and hung up the phone.
After a while, Winston emerged from the side building, and Abella was somewhat surprised. "Did you get any results?"
"They didn't say a word," Winston's mood was somewhat down. "Sam stripped them naked, but they didn't have any gang tattoos on them. It's still unclear which organization they belong to."
"Don't worry, Sam will find a way."
Winston looked at the vast lawn, his spirits sinking even further.
"Abella, where do you think Nicole is now?" he asked.
"It's hard to say."
