Chapter 295 The First Time He Saw Her Cry
It was half an hour later when all the guests had arrived, and the host was on stage, energizing the atmosphere. Then, he invited Mr. Hamilton and Mrs. Hamilton to the stage to give a speech.
"Dear friends and family, today is the day of Remy and Isla's engagement. Thank you all for coming. We hope you can witness their happy moment together."
Mrs. Hamilton had just finished speaking when the magnificent hall, once again filled with enthusiastic applause. The banquet began with over six hundred guests, in total attending today.
There were performances on stage. The opening clown had the entire audience laughing out loud.
In the hospital, on the other side of the city, a feeble hand reached out to Abella, pulling her dress gently, and managed a smile that lacked energy.
"Child, don't cry..."
As soon as Grandma comforted her, tears streamed down Abella's face. No one knew Grandma's current physical condition better than Abella. Grandma being able to talk to her meant it was her final resurgence.
Back in the Triangle District, Abella never shed a tear even when she suffered serious injuries. But now, the tears fell uncontrollably, like loose beads.
Barbara, lying on the surgical table, struggled to muster a gentle smile and said weakly, "I... just dreamt about your grandpa. He said, 'It's time, he's here to pick me up...'"
Abella shook her head, her eyes clear and filled with sadness from the tears. She couldn't accept this reality, no matter what.
"Look, your grandpa is standing there, smiling at me..." Barbara was afraid Abella would blame herself and feel sad, so she did her best to comfort her.
"Child, it's because of my own physical condition, not because of you. Your medical skills are amazing, you've saved me multiple times already. This time, it's my fate, God is calling me."
She should have died years ago, but Abella's medical skills had given her a few more years of life. She was already satisfied.
Abella wiped away the tears from her face. Kneeling beside Grandma, her voice choked with emotion and tenderness, "Grandma, please don't say anything. Let me try another way."
"It's useless... I know my own body. In this lifetime, having such a wonderful granddaughter like you, I am content... My journey on earth hasn't been in vain..." As Barbara said this, she was struggling to catch her breath.
She made an effort to continue, "But I won't be able to see you, in a wedding dress, walking down the aisle into marriage..." Her Abella would look so beautiful in a wedding dress. Unfortunately, she would never be able to see it in this lifetime.
Just then, the door to the operating room was forcefully pushed open by Dr. Smith, "Abella! Phillipe has been waiting outside!"
"Let him come in!" After Abella spoke, she gently wiped away the tears from Grandma's face and pleaded softly, "Grandma, hold on a little longer. Phillipe is coming. I haven't even had a chance to introduce you to each other."
Barbara seemed as though she didn't hear. Using her last ounce of strength, she smiled and said, "Abella, I am finally no longer a burden to you... Take care of yourself and be happy..."
"Grandma!"
Phillipe rushed in, only to see Barbara take her last breath in front of Abella, weakly closing her eyes as her fragile hand slipped down.
"Grandma!" Abella couldn't believe what was happening before her eyes. Holding Barbara, her mind went blank.
Not long after, the entire operating room was filled with the heart-wrenching cries of the girl. Phillipe stood frozen in place, never imagining that he wouldn't make it, to see Abella's grandma, one last time.
"Grandma, wake up." Abella knelt on the cold floor, hugging Grandma's lifeless body and crying hysterically.
This was the first time Phillipe had ever seen her cry. From the moment they met, until now, she had never revealed her vulnerability. It was as if there was nothing she couldn't handle in the world. She was so proud, but now she cried like a child.
"I haven't taken you on a trip abroad yet, haven't introduced Phillipe to you... Why did you leave me behind?" Abella cried with a heart-wrenching pain.
"Grandma, come back... We still have so many things to do together... You promised me you would live to a hundred... It's all my fault..." Seeing her blame herself, Phillipe walked over and gently embraced her.
"You've already done so well."
At least in Phillipe's eyes, from a little past two in the morning until early afternoon, she had done everything she could to save a life. If there was any way, she wouldn't let grandma slip away from her...
Abella cried with deep sadness and self-blame, "I am an Abbott, yet I couldn't save her... How could this be... Why couldn't I save her... Why was there no way..."
Phillipe held her tightly, his eyes becoming red. He understood how much Barbara meant to Abella. She was so important, but even more so for Abella to understand her current state of mind.
"It's not your fault, you've already done your best... If you're sad, let it out, I'm here."
"I can't save her, Phillipe, I can't save her..." Abella lowered her head, as if reality had overwhelmed her, and she cried bitterly while holding onto grandma's body.
Back when she studied medicine, she told Grandma that she would safeguard her health throughout her entire life. She promised Grandma that she would live to be a hundred years old, because there was no surgery in this world that she couldn't handle.
But now, her heart was shattered, and her grandma was gone right in front of her!
The world knows how formidable Abbott is, with superb medical skills, but the world doesn't know that there are also people whom they cannot save!
