Chapter 564 Abella's Words

"What's going on? Why is there still some toxin left?" Rodolfo's eyes widened at the stubborn black spot on the screen. Despite the upgraded detox pill, the spot wouldn't budge.

Abella said, "Looks like even the new detox pill can't fully clear Nicole's toxin. But it's better than the old antidotes."

"That can't be. I removed all the toxins this morning. Are they regenerating?" Rodolfo checked the experiment notes.

Abella added, "Maybe the antidote can't fully suppress this toxin. If it's regenerating, we need to tweak the antidote."

Abella, now in her lab coat, was about to start the experiment when her phone buzzed.

"Ms. Wilson, I have a patient who needs your help," the caller said respectfully. "It's my friend's mom. I wouldn't ask if it wasn't serious."

Abella quickly replied, "Sorry, I'm too busy right now."

She had too much on her plate, and the Umbra League was always watching her. Helping could put an innocent family at risk.

"I know you're swamped, but my friend's in tears. The patient's condition is worsening, and I'm out of ideas. Please, even a few words of advice would mean a lot," the caller pleaded.

Abella sighed. She couldn't help everyone, but she had a soft heart. "Send me the medical records. I'll look when I can."

"Thank you, Ms. Wilson. I'll email them right away," the caller said gratefully.

Just as she hung up, Sam called.

"Ms. Medici, based on Raymond's info, we checked large Verdania-style homes from over a decade ago. We've narrowed it down to thirty-nine. Should we investigate each one?"

"What do you think?" Abella asked.

"What if one of these is Nicole's real family?"

Would she want to reconnect? Given her situation, could she even go back? Would they accept her? Or would she face a two-faced sister like Abella did?

"That's not our concern," Abella said calmly. "We're just helping Nicole find her family. What happens next is up to her."

"I'll update you with any results."

"Alright."

"You're so busy every day. By the time you're done talking, I've already gone through all these records," Rodolfo chuckled, pointing at the screen. "Look, the toxin really does regenerate. I told you, in this morning's experiment, the toxin was clearly removed. How could it grow back? Seems you're right; some component of the antidote can't suppress the toxin and gets counteracted by it. This is a major discovery."

"I just remembered that medical book you had me read as a kid. It mentioned a medicine called Piercing of Heart that can suppress toxin growth."

"Right, how did I not think of that!" Rodolfo said happily. "Guess making you copy medical books as a kid paid off."

Abella smirked. "Besides copying medical books, I remember a lot of other things."

"Let's not bring up the past," Rodolfo said, a bit nervous. "You were so adorable as a child. I liked you from the start, but I couldn't always smile at you. How would you improve if I did that? So, I was just a little strict when teaching you."

Rodolfo kept chuckling.

Abella raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "Just a little strict?"

Rodolfo quickly added, "I never physically punished you. At most, I made you copy medical books or recite them while standing on your head."

Abella nodded with interest. "What else?"

"Nothing else. Why are we talking about this? Nicole's condition is more important," Rodolfo said, feeling a bit guilty.

Watching him turn back to the experiment, Abella said with a smile, "Mr. Wilson, the kindness you and the other gentlemen have shown me, I will remember for the rest of my life."

Rodolfo was so startled that he dropped something and quickly turned to explain, "Please don't remember my stern side. Don't forget the good things I've done for you."

Abella laughed. "I have no intention of getting back at you."

"That's good. You scared me. Seeing your talent as a child, we were eager for you to succeed immediately. We put in a lot of effort. Now that you're successful but have encountered such big trouble, it proves that fame indeed brings complications," Rodolfo said, worried.

Abella knew he was referring to the Umbra League and reassured him, "Mr. Wilson, don't worry. This will all be over soon."

"You're grown up now and make your own decisions. I know I can't persuade you, but as long as I'm alive, I'll do my best to protect you."

Watching his rambling back, Abella felt a surge of emotion. From childhood to adulthood, if it weren't for the companionship and teachings of these gentlemen, she might have been just like her peers, with nothing outstanding.

"I don't need your protection anymore," Abella said with a confident smile, her eyes shining. "I can protect you now."

You raised me, and now I will accompany you into old age.

Rodolfo turned back, looking at her with emotion. He suddenly felt like crying.

He thought, 'I have to tell the other gentlemen in the group chat. This is the first time Abella said something so touching to me.'

"Help me find out where I can get Piercing of Heart. If there is any, get me a few plants," Abella said, already on the phone giving instructions.

Rodolfo quickly wiped the tears from his eyes and turned back to the experiment.
