Chapter 770 Can't Figure It Out
"Aunt Bonnie, seriously, this ain't got nothin' to do with me. I don't even know the dude, so how could I off him? First off, I got no beef with him, and second, I ain't got the guts. No motive, no skills, no way I'd kill him. Why would I even think about it?" Lola bawled, feeling totally wronged. "Plus, it was the servants who dragged me there. I was about to crash when they said someone wanted to see me, so I went. How was I supposed to know there were a bunch of people locked in the basement? I'm not psychic; how could I know the servants would screw up and call me? I got zero reason to do something like that."
Bonnie was just as puzzled, but since Lola was the last one to see him, she was definitely on the suspect list.
"Isn't Abella a doctor? Aunt Bonnie, don't you know a bunch of big shots? You can check if my fingerprints are on his face or something. If I smothered him, there'd be proof, right?" Lola sobbed. "It really wasn't me, Aunt Bonnie. You might doubt me on other stuff, but I could never kill someone."
Just as she was about to cry herself into a faint, there was a sudden urgent knock on the study door.
Vanessa barged in, seeing Bonnie and Abella grilling Lola, who was crying her eyes out, looking like a scared little lamb, all pitiful and terrified.
"What the heck is going on?" Vanessa asked, rushing into the room.
"Grandma." Lola reached out, seeking comfort from Vanessa. She was so scared she felt weak all over, not even having the strength to get up and run to her.
She desperately needed someone to hold her and tell her it was gonna be okay.
Vanessa hurried over. "What's happening? Bonnie, what are you doing in the middle of the night?"
David peeked in from the doorway, looking all confused. "What's going on?"
He and Vanessa were about to hit the sack when they heard faint crying from inside. The crying got louder, and it sounded like Lola.
But they couldn't make out what was being said.
Lola cried helplessly in Vanessa's arms, not explaining anything, just crying.
"Bonnie, what the heck is going on?" Vanessa looked at Bonnie again. How could they push Lola to such a state in the middle of the night, crying so hard she could barely breathe?
"Let her go back and rest." Bonnie didn't spill the beans, worried it would freak Vanessa and David out in the middle of the night. After all, someone had hired a hitman to go after Abella, and this person was tied to the Umbra League.
She was just pissed that the trail had gone cold. Lola was the last one to see him, making her suspicious, but there was no proof.
Seeing that Bonnie wasn't gonna say more, Vanessa didn't push it. She just helped Lola up and gently comforted her, "Go back and get some sleep. We'll sort it out tomorrow."
Lola was genuinely terrified, barely able to walk. She almost collapsed after taking just one step.
Vanessa held her tightly.
"How did she get so scared?" David also helped support her.
Whenever Lola thought of that creepy basement, she couldn't stop shaking. The cells holding people, their wails, and their bloody wounds.
She never knew Caleb's house had such a freaky basement, like something straight outta a horror movie that made her skin crawl.
After they helped Lola away, Bonnie turned to Abella.
"Yeah, she's definitely sketchy, but there's no solid proof she did it," Abella said, reading Bonnie's mind. "Keep digging; more clues will pop up. No need to rush."
Bonnie wanted to argue but just nodded. "You've had a long day too. Go get some rest."
"Aunt Bonnie, don't stress it. The truth will come out eventually." Abella had been through enough investigations to know that rushing things usually backfires. Sometimes, taking it slow reveals more.
Bonnie nodded again. After Abella left, she sat alone in the study, lost in thought.
Caleb finished his shower and knocked on the door. "Why aren't you asleep yet?"
Bonnie filled him in on what happened and shared her doubts. "If Lola hired someone to hurt Abella, but I locked that person in the basement first, maybe Lola didn't know where he was hiding after the mission failed. Then she accidentally found him this time, freaked out he'd expose her, and killed him? But why wouldn't he fight back if he wanted to live? And if he didn't want to live, why did he want to see Abella one last time? Two days ago, when Abella talked to him, he seemed like he wanted to live."
Too many questions swirled in Bonnie's head, making it impossible to figure out.
Caleb speculated, "Could someone else have killed him? Lola said he suddenly went quiet. Maybe she thought he was dead and bolted. After she left, someone else came in and finished the job. That's possible too."
"If he was killed, how come he didn't struggle?"
"He told Lola he wanted to end it rather than suffer in our hands. Could the killer be his partner?"
"But Abella said there were no other traces at the scene, no extra footprints."
"Maybe there's a clue we missed?" Caleb patted her shoulder. "Don't overthink it. I'll take some people to re-check the scene. You go rest."
Bonnie knew stressing wouldn't help, so she nodded. "If you find anything, even if I'm asleep, wake me up immediately."
"Don't worry, I'll let you know right away," Caleb hugged her shoulder, took her back to the room, and tucked her in, saying softly, "Since you came back to this house, you haven't had a single peaceful day. There's too much on your plate. It's so late, and you still haven't slept."
"I'm just pissed that the hard-earned clues have been cut off. Those people hired someone to kill Abella. How much more danger will she face?" Bonnie was genuinely worried.
But she couldn't share this worry with the elders in the family, making them sleepless and anxious every day.
"We need to speed up and wipe out all those people." Bonnie had promised Abella that even if she had to search all of Verdania, she'd root out every last one of them.
In the past two days, she had indeed instructed her team to do so, but before they could finish the job, this incident happened.
"Alright, stop thinking about it. Go to sleep," Caleb gently coaxed her. When she felt drowsy, he turned off the main light, closed the door, and left.
