Chapter 613 Critical Situation
"Uncle Zephyr, it's none of his business," Nicole said, trying to step forward, but the poison in her body flared up.
She grabbed the wall for support, but the pain was too much, and she collapsed.
Despite not wanting to show weakness, the pain was unbearable.
Beckett, Kimberly, and even Lola were shocked.
"Nicole, are you okay?" Winston rushed to help her. "Don't stress, let me get you a chair."
"My daughter is suffering, and you're worried about another girl!" Zephyr yelled, grabbing Winston by the collar. "Winston!"
"Zephyr, calm down. Your family needs you," Beckett intervened, pulling Zephyr's arm. "Let me talk to Winston."
Winston was still focused on Nicole.
Kimberly hit his shoulder. "You owe Mr. and Mrs. Wren an explanation. Hurry up and clarify!"
"Wait, Nicole's in a lot of pain," Winston said, not wanting to cause her more trouble. He knew her pain better than anyone.
He quickly took out the last life-saving pill Abella had given Nicole.
After taking it, Nicole felt a bit better but fainted in Winston's arms due to the strain on her body.
"Nicole, doctor!" Winston shouted, carrying her to find help.
Sharon started crying. "I only have one daughter."
"Sharon, it's Winston's fault. When he comes back, he'll explain and apologize," Kimberly said, feeling guilty.
They had watched Clara grow up, and now she was on the operating table, her life in danger.
The operating room door opened, and a nurse rushed out.
Everyone crowded around, and Sharon asked, "Nurse, how is my daughter?"
"Don't worry, Dr. Medici and the team are doing their best. Dr. Medici is personally performing the surgery, so the chances are better."
"Is my daughter in life-threatening danger?" Zephyr asked, his eyes red.
"We won't give up as long as there's hope. Please be patient. The patient has lost a lot of blood, and I need to get more. Please make way."
"Nurse," Sharon started to say more but stopped, worried about delaying treatment.
"So Abella is inside," Beckett realized. "That's why she was driving so fast."
"Zephyr, Sharon, with Abella there, she'll do everything to save Clara," Kimberly reassured them. "You should sit down."
"Is Abella a doctor?" Sharon asked, tearfully.
"Does she even have a medical license?" Zephyr asked again.
It made sense for Zephyr and Sharon, or anyone really, to be freaked out by the idea of a college student doing surgery on their loved one.
But Kimberly had the best argument. "She operated on Mr. Bourbon and succeeded."
Zephyr and Sharon knew how tough his case was. His heart had been through multiple surgeries and was full of scars. For Abella to pull off a successful surgery on that heart meant her skills were top-notch.
They felt a bit more reassured.
"Margaret, please make sure Abella saves Clara. She's our only daughter."
"Sharon, get up," Kimberly said, helping her. "You know Abella. She'll do everything she can to save Clara!"
Lola bit her lip, shocked that Abella was the surgeon. NYU Medical Center was a big hospital. How could they let a college student without a diploma or license lead a surgery? Were they out of their minds?
Time ticked by, and Abella noticed the patient's vitals weakening.
"Dr. Medici, with these injuries, she can't survive."
"We get that you want to save her, but she's too far gone."
"Should we let her say goodbye to her family?"
Abella kept suturing, calm and focused. "Her heart's still beating, and you want to call it? Do you think she'd agree? Or her family?"
"Dr. Medici—"
"If you don't want to save her, leave," Abella said, not even looking up. "I don't want to hear that again."
The other doctors, intimidated, stayed quiet and cooperated.
In the corridor, Sharon's faint sobs could be heard. Zephyr, eyes red, sat with his head in his hands, despairing.
Lola, exhausted, stifled a yawn. If she had known, she wouldn't have come. She'd been waiting for over three hours for nothing.
Beckett didn't know how to comfort them, and Kimberly brought water, but they were too lost in their pain to drink.
Meanwhile, Nicole was taken to the ICU. Her condition was severe, and Winston could only watch helplessly as the nurse wheeled her in.
From a distance, Kimberly heard Winston's frantic voice. "Is there nothing you can do?"
"We've never seen anything like this. The toxins in her body are complex and have built up over time. You said Dr. Medici might have a solution. For now, all we can do is keep her stable and hope Dr. Medici gets here in time."
