"Smart move on his part," Steven said, handing Abella more breakfast. "I planned to come back to see you three days ago, but something urgent came up overseas that I had to handle."
Steven felt a pang of guilt and self-blame for not being there sooner when Abella was frightened in the abandoned building.
"Steven, you have a lot of responsibilities. Normally, you can't always be here. Don't worry about it. I've grown up and can take care of myself," Abella reassured him, understanding his situation.
Abella herself was often busy, managing the company that Owen had left her. She hadn't even had time to visit it yet, and Easter was approaching with Isolde's dress still unfinished.
"The first time I came home after you returned, I noticed Lola's petty schemes," Steven said. "I talked to her back then, but seeing how scared she was, I thought she would change."
Abella was surprised to learn that Steven had confronted Lola privately. No wonder he would sometimes expose her tricks in front of everyone, even sounding a bit reproachful.
Steven's voice remained calm. "I also warned Maria, but I didn't expect them to escalate things to this extent."

"From now on, he'll be with you," Steven said, surprising Abella.
