Chapter 997 The Strange Driver

"Abella, Elsa, you're both here? Perfect timing, come over here for a sec," Winslow called out with a warm smile as she entered the garden.

Abella had just walked a short distance away when she heard Winslow calling her. She turned back and approached Winslow.

"Grandma, do you need something from us?" Elsa asked, her face lighting up with a smile as if nothing had happened earlier.

"Yeah, I have a friend who's a violin master. She's been looking for her final and most important student. She just messaged me asking if I had any recommendations. She's looking for someone with great talent." Winslow held her phone, the screen still on the chat window. "Abella is already a master herself, her violin skills far surpass my friend's. So, I thought of you."

Winslow lovingly patted Elsa's head. "You've loved the violin since you were little. You even studied under Dominic, but he never taught you his core techniques. My friend is more skilled than Dominic. I think you could learn from her and eventually become a master."

"Me?" Elsa felt cornered. She couldn't admit that she could no longer play the violin.

"Abella is Stringless, and she's right here. Play a piece for her and see where your skills stand. My friend has high standards. Even if you have talent and decent skills, she might not be impressed."

Winslow was about to ask someone to bring a violin when Elsa smiled and said, "Grandma, I won't be pursuing the violin anymore."

"Why?" Winslow was surprised.

"To be honest, I once thought about learning from Stringless," Elsa said with a playful smile. "But I realized I don't have enough talent. So, I've decided that music, Go, and painting will just be hobbies. I want to focus on another career. Thank you for thinking of me."

Winslow was taken aback by Elsa's decision but nodded. "You're a determined child. Alright, since you have other plans, I won't force you. Whatever you choose to do, I'll support you."

Elsa breathed a sigh of relief and smiled.

"I'll let my friend know that I don't have a suitable candidate right now," Winslow said, turning to leave. She suddenly remembered something and added, "If you ever need advice, you can ask Abella. She's a KnightStrategist in Go, an Anika and Stringless in music, and holds the Medical Authority title as Abbott. Whatever you decide to pursue, Abella can guide you."

Elsa, not wanting to seem weak, smiled and said, "You're right, Grandma."

"But let me be clear, just a few pointers. Don't ask too much; Abella is very busy," Winslow said with a chuckle, tapping her phone screen to reply to her friend as she walked away.

Elsa felt awkward and looked up to find that Abella had already left.

Did Abella really dislike spending even a second more with her?

Why did she leave so quickly?

Back when Lola was at the Medici Manor, they saw each other every day, and Abella didn't seem this annoyed.

Was Elsa really less likable than Lola?

Abella saw Toby blocking a man's path from a distance.

She walked through part of the garden towards them.

"Ms. Medici!" The bodyguard captain Toby Diaz looked relieved to see Abella, his gaze fixed on the suspicious man. "This guy was lurking near the basement skylight."

At Toby's feet was a skylight leading to the basement. Looking down, one could see a corner of the basement.

Most mansions had this design, with skylights on the ground to let sunlight into the basement, improving lighting and ventilation.

"I didn't know there was a skylight here," The man explained anxiously. "The grass is so tall, all I could see was grass. I said many times, I'm new here and was looking for the restroom. I saw a small door from a distance and wanted to check it out. I didn't know I couldn't walk here."

"You couldn't ask someone for directions? There are so many servants around. Don't tell me you didn't see anyone," Toby remained suspicious.

"I saw most of the servants were women and felt awkward asking them, especially since they seemed busy," The man explained helplessly, looking at Abella. "Ms. Medici, I really didn't know I couldn't walk here... I was just looking for the restroom."

"You think Ms. Medici is easy to fool? You better explain yourself clearly, or don't blame me for being harsh!" Toby revealed his equipment, ready to apprehend the man.

"What's going on?" A graceful voice interrupted.

The man looked towards the voice, feeling relieved, and quickly explained, "Mrs. Medici, I was looking for the restroom and accidentally went the wrong way. Toby insists I'm suspicious, saying I'm looking for the basement or skylight."

Margaret maintained a composed smile. "It's a misunderstanding. Luke is the new driver I hired. It's his first day here, and he doesn't know the house rules or what's been happening."

She turned to Luke Hayes with a smile, "I'll explain things here. You go ahead to the restroom."

"He can't leave."

Toby tried to stop him, but Margaret smiled gently, "I understand your diligence as captain. If you're worried, he can come back for questioning after using the restroom ."

If Toby insisted on stopping him, it would seem excessive.

But Toby didn't want to let him go, fearing he might destroy evidence.

"Changing drivers right before Christmas?" Abella asked with a smile.

Typically, around Christmas, people stick with familiar faces and avoid changes.

"The previous driver wanted to take care of his wife, who just had a baby, so I gave him two months off." Margaret kept her gentle smile. "I did a background check on this driver, and he's clean. If you're still worried, you can question him further."

"If you say he's clean, we have no reason to stop him."

Abella's words made Toby anxious. He didn't want to let the man go, fearing he might be hiding something.

"Thank Abella, quickly," Margaret said gracefully. "Anyone else would have insisted on stopping you."

Luke quickly bowed in thanks, "Thank you, Ms. Medici. I won't be so reckless next time."

Abella kept her smile and nodded.

As Luke walked away, Toby grew increasingly anxious, not wanting to let him go so easily.
