Chapter 17
"You should stop wasting time and find yourself a girlfriend too. Show a certain someone how happy life can be when you have a girlfriend!" Ryan implied pointedly.
Phillipe opened up the breakfast box he brought and placed it in front of Ryan. "What if Gabriel neglects his duty because of his girlfriend? Are you going to do his job?"
"Of course!" Ryan agreed immediately, to Gabriel's surprise.
"Of course not! Gabriel, if you get a girlfriend, I will definitely give you time off. At least, you don't have to work overtime on weekends! I will also give you a big reward! By then, ask Phillipe to hire more people to share your workload!"
Gabriel was moved to tears over Ryan's promises.
Ryan added, "Especially, I'll give you a raise and more benefits!"
"Thank you, sir!" Gabriel was deeply touched and immediately sided with Ryan. "You're right, Sir Bourbon. At Mr. Bourbon's age, he should think about settling down. Don't worry. I will keep on reminding him of the benefits of marriage. Hopefully, Mr. Bourbon will get married soon."
"OK, OK! Look at how clever Gabriel is. You're too stubborn!" Ryan praised Gabriel while giving Phillipe a jab.
Gabriel was preening when...
"Gabriel, there's a project in Africa that's short-staffed."
Phillipe's words made Gabriel panic immediately. "Mr. Bourbon, what I meant was..."
"Pack up. You're going there tomorrow."
"Mr. Bourbon???" Gabriel sent a pleading look towards Ryan.
Cunning as ever, Ryan deftly handled the situation. "Gabriel, I want you to visit me after work every day. You can keep me company. It's boring here!"
"Mr. Bourbon, look. It's Sir Bourbon's order..."
At that moment, the doorknob turned slightly, and someone sneaked in stealthily.
"It's me, Sir Bourbon." The disheveled Aurora entered the room. She hastily strengthened her clothes as she noticed that there were other people in Ryan's room. "Good morning, Mr. Bourbon, Gabriel. You're here early."
It wasn't even 8 AM, which meant it wasn't visiting hour.
To sneak in, Aurora must have used her old work badge for the lock on the entrance. And she had to take the fire escape and avoid the cameras on the way.
"Who allowed you to come here?" Phillipe had spared her yesterday for Connor's sake.
But she had the audacity to come to the ward without anyone's permission.
"Sir Bourbon, Mr. Bourbon, please give me another chance!" Aurora suddenly knelt. "I really wanna keep on being a doctor. Please give me my job back. Sir Bourbon, I helped with your treatment. I was your attending before."
She had at least worked hard, if not achieved anything notable.
"She lost her job?" Ryan asked Gabriel.
"Yes. Yesterday, when your condition worsened, she didn't take immediate action. Instead, she tried to end your life prematurely. She's a bad doctor. Abella, who operated on you yesterday, said Aurora doesn't deserve to be a doctor! Mr. Field learned about her vile acts and decided to fire her, ending her career as a doctor."
Gabriel glared at Aurora, showing no sympathy toward this evil woman.
"That bitch did it on purpose. Because she hated me, she smeared my name in front of Mr. Field! Sir Bourbon, I'm innocent. I've always been dedicated to your treatment. Do you remember when..."
Before Aurora could finish, Phillipe's dark eyes deepened with displeasure. A dangerous aura surrounded him.
Gabriel was shocked that Aurora still had the guts to twist the truth and slander Abella.
Did she think they were blind and had lost their minds yesterday? They'd seen the whole thing.
"Aurora, I advise you to think before you speak!" Gabriel warned with a frown.
It was she who advocated for the sedatives and heart-soothing drugs yesterday!
How dare she try to blame Abella for everything?!
Abella saved Ryan's life. And Aurora called her a bitch.
"From now on, you and your family are not allowed to set foot in New York ever again," Ryan suddenly announced. "Get her out."
Aurora had come to plead her case, not expecting to drag her whole family down with her. "Sir Bourbon, what I did do to make you angry? Yesterday was just a misunderstanding!"
She clung to the bedpost, refusing to leave. "Sir Bourbon, please hear me out..."
Seething, Ryan scoffed, "You have no right to speak to me!"
"Sir Bourbon, if you refuse to spare me, I have no choice but to kill myself in front of you."
"Go ahead." Ryan couldn't have cared less. "Gabriel, give her a knife."
John picked up a fruit knife from the table and tossed it in front of her.
Aurora flinched as the knife collided with the floor with a clear sound. She only threatened to kill herself to scare Ryan and had no plans to actually end her life.
"Sir..." Realizing that Ryan wouldn't be threatened or convinced, Aurora started crying. "My family is poor. I'm the only child. I've been the hope of my family since I was a child. It's always been my dream to be a doctor to save people."
"A doctor? You don't deserve to be a doctor anymore!" Ryan was furious. "Just because I was lying in bed yesterday, it didn't mean that I couldn't hear you! It was you who advocated for the sedatives and heart-soothing drugs. Abella told you clearly that I'd die once you gave me the drugs, yet you insisted!"
"I, I..." Aurora was shocked that Ryan had heard yesterday's conversation. It took her a few seconds to recover. Still, she was at a loss for words.
"Abella said the drugs would only give me about half an hour of clarity. After that, even the best doctor in the world can't save me!
"I was lucky that she was passing by and was kind enough to operate on me. Otherwise, I would be dead by now! And you wouldn't be able to beg for my mercy even if you wanted to.
"I'm showing you mercy by merely terminating your career and banishing your family from New York. It's for Connor's sake. Be grateful!
"Abella was right. Calling you a quack is giving you too much credit! She's barely an adult, yet she's much better a doctor than you."
Aurora's face turned ashy pale and she looked despaired. "Sir Bourbon..."
"Gabriel, there are the doctors who agreed with her yesterday and a doctor who suggested shifting the blame onto Abella if anything happened to me. Fire them all! They don't deserve to be doctors!"
Ryan ordered and glanced at Aurora, who was sitting beside the bed. "Why are you still here? Do I need to throw you out?"
"Sir Bourbon, you're recovering. Don't get too worked up... Aurora, are you deaf? Get out!" John said coldly.
Aurora realized there was no hope left for her. After muttering a quiet apology, she scurried off.
