Chapter 690 Mrs. Harris Wants to See You

"Man, he ain't got nothin' on us," Sam shot a look at Alex.

If Alex hadn't pulled those sneaky moves to knock 'em out, who knows who'd be in trouble now.

Alex had to hold back from decking him after hearing that.

On the way to the restaurant, Sam was totally floored by Caleb's swanky manor, kept going on about it, which had Caleb laughing his head off and in a great mood.

Caleb grinned and told 'em to make themselves at home, check the place out, then said, "Abella, come with me for a sec."

Abella shot Sam a look, telling him not to do anything stupid, and then followed Caleb.

Caleb asked, "Abella, remember a long time ago, you saved my bacon?"

Abella looked kinda surprised, like she couldn't remember.

Caleb added, "Back then, I heard about this place called Silvercrest on your side, full of all kinds of magical herbs. Since all the big-shot doctors couldn't do squat about your grandparents' illnesses, I decided to take a gamble and head there with some folks. Even though I heard it was a mess, I figured bringing enough people would be cool, but we got ambushed. You showed up and saved our butts, making sure I didn't lose a single guy."

Abella remembered now. Back then, a bunch of big forces were running the show, and a lot of small-time groups popped up, all fighting for turf and resources.

Any new face would get targeted the second they stepped in.

When Abella saw Caleb's crew getting cornered, she jumped in to help, not for any big reason, but partly 'cause they were from Libertya, and partly to show other groups that anyone they wanted to protect was off-limits.

"Didn't think we met that long ago," Caleb's eyes softened. "Even my people couldn't stick around there for long. How'd you manage all these years? Sam told me you've been through a lot."

Abella replied, "It's no biggie. Every young person goes through tough times."

"The Medici family and the Harris family put you through so much crap, making you face all those trials for no reason," Caleb said, feeling kinda guilty.

"Those trials made me stronger. Uncle Caleb, you don't need to feel bad."

Because of that, she met a lot of skilled teachers, learned a ton, and could help more people.

Caleb thought she was really wise and open-minded, looking at her with admiration and affection. "Kimberly's lucky to have a daughter like you. I'm proud of her."

In the afternoon, after Sam and his crew got back, it didn't take long for him to call Abella. "Ms. Medici, the guys in black at the restaurant finally spilled the beans. They're not Alexis' guys; they came just to deal with you."

Abella was a bit surprised to hear that.

"They didn't know the guy eating with you that night was Caleb, one of the top rich dudes in Verdania. They said if they had known, they would've never made a move in front of him. Now Caleb's guys are hunting them down, and they got nowhere to run!"

Abella quietly listened as he went on.

"They said they'd tell us everything they know, as long as we keep 'em safe and send 'em back home, sparing their lives."

After all, messing with Caleb on his turf made it tough for them to survive. Now, they'd rather be locked up by Sam for life than come out and get whacked.

"Ms. Medici, do you think they're dumb or what? Anyone with half a brain knows we wouldn't cross Caleb for their sorry hides. Lucky for us, Caleb's your uncle. I played along and finally got some dirt. They said someone put a hefty price on your head. I've already sent folks back home to dig into it, and we should have answers soon."

Abella's eyes narrowed. 'Who the hell wants me dead?'

Before she could say anything, Sam started griping, "Ms. Medici, who could be that stupid? Putting a bounty on your head? Doesn't everyone in the biz know your skills and who you are? Who's behind this boneheaded move?"

Sam paused, then couldn't help but ask, "Ms. Medici, ticked anyone off lately?"

Abella's voice was lazy, almost bored. "Too many to count."

With her rep, how could she not have enemies?

"But this time, I don't think these folks are tied to the ones after Nicole. Their power's strong; they wouldn't need a bounty to take you out."

Speaking of Nicole, Abella asked softly, "How's Nicole holding up?"

"She's doing better. A few days ago, she went to the Wren family to apologize on her own. The Wrens didn't forgive her and told her to stay away. Later, Mrs. Wren fainted from grief while mourning Clara, and Nicole took her to the hospital without leaving her name."

Abella was surprised. "What about Mrs. Wren's staff?"

"Since Clara's grave is near the Wren Manor, Mrs. Wren always goes there alone to mourn, without bringing anyone. Maybe she wants to grieve for Clara alone," Sam guessed.

Abella asked again, "Have the Wrens calmed down?"

"Not really, but Nicole has acknowledged her biological parents. However, her bio family..." Sam trailed off, sounding complicated.

Abella sensed something was off and asked, "What's up?"

Sam had sent her info about Nicole's bio family, but she hadn't had time to check it out. Now it seemed there was a problem?

"Well, Nicole's bio mom searched everywhere for her missing kids and died of illness years ago. Her bio dad remarried and had twins, a boy and a girl, who are now eighteen. When Nicole and her brother Raymond suddenly showed up, her stepmom wasn't thrilled."

After all, it was clear they were back to claim the inheritance.

"So, Nicole's having a rough time with her bio family," Abella said, feeling a pang of sympathy.

"Not exactly. Nicole's still living with Winston and only visits occasionally. But fitting into that family will take time." Hearing Sam's words, Abella got a clearer picture.

Just then, a servant knocked on the door. "Ms. Medici, are you resting? Mrs. Harris has woken up and wants to see you."

Abella said goodbye to Sam, opened the door, and asked, "You said my aunt is awake?"

"Yes, Ms. Medici. Do you have time now?"

"I do."

"Please follow me."

The servant led the way, and Abella remembered she had come empty-handed the first time they met and didn't know what to bring for her aunt now.

Before, she had only prepared a gift for Caleb because she never knew she had an aunt.

It must have been because everyone thought her aunt was dead, and no one mentioned this sad matter.
