Chapter 716 Eating Fried Chicken Together
On the way to the hospital, Ulysses tried calling another crew, but no one picked up.
With a scowl, he muttered, "None of the guys I sent to surround the manor are answering. Caleb's probably got 'em locked up."
"Ulysses, this might actually be a good thing. If Caleb's holding at least two hundred of your guys, he's gotta use a lot of his own men to guard them. That means he doesn't have many left to move around. Tonight's our best shot!"
A flash of hatred crossed Ulysses' eyes. "No matter what, this has to work. We can't afford to screw this up!"
At the hospital, Bonnie sat on a bench in the hallway, looking pretty down.
The elevator doors opened, and out walked Ulysses with Derek, Yancy, and Jerold.
"Bonnie, why are you alone? Where's Caleb?" Derek asked, pretending to care.
Bonnie looked up, her eyes sad. "Uncle Derek, why are you here? Uncle Ulysses, Uncle Yancy, Uncle Jerold, you're all here too?"
"David's in there. Honestly, we feel kinda responsible," Ulysses said, faking remorse. "We were so worried we couldn't sleep, so we came to check on him."
"Uncle Ulysses, so you still have a bit of a conscience. I thought it was completely gone. Guess there's still a little left."
Ulysses' face darkened, but he had to play nice. "I know you hate me. Tonight's mess was my bad. I scared you and left a bad impression. I'm sorry! I agree to all the conditions you discussed with Derek. Yancy and Jerold also said they'd talk it over with their wives."
Yancy and Jerold quickly added, "Yeah, that's right. We'll give you a satisfactory answer ASAP."
Bonnie suddenly said, "You agreed so quickly, it makes me feel like you have a conspiracy."
"Bonnie, we're your elders. Would we really deceive you?" Derek hurriedly said, "Besides, you have Caleb by your side. Who would dare to deceive you?"
"When can you give me a final answer?" Bonnie seemed to believe them a bit.
"Before sunrise tomorrow, I promise to persuade Angie and Naomi to transfer all their shares to you!"
"Is that a promise?"
"Yes, a promise!"
At that moment, a voice chimed in. "What promise?"
"Caleb." All the elders looked over and couldn't help but feel a bit intimidated when they saw Caleb.
Derek was the first to show concern. "Caleb, how's your dad?"
Caleb snapped, "Uncle Derek, you seem to have forgotten that my dad is lying in there because of each and every one of you. What are you doing here now? Do you think my dad's condition isn't serious enough? Do you want to make him even angrier?"
"Caleb, tonight's incident was a misunderstanding. If you don't believe me, ask Bonnie. Your dad and I are siblings. Seeing him lying in there, I don't feel good either," Derek said dejectedly.
Ulysses' tone also became heavier. "Just thinking about your dad suffering in there makes us restless. We had to see him with our own eyes to feel at ease."
In the operating room, David and Abella quietly toasted each other, sitting on the floor drinking soda and munching on fried chicken.
David said, "This chicken is good, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. It would be even better with some grilled meat."
Abella couldn't help but laugh. "Grandpa, you just got better. You should still be eating light. Plus, grilled meat has a strong smell. Folks outside will definitely notice."
Even with the windows open, the aroma of fried chicken filled the operating room. Grilled meat would be even more noticeable.
"Abella, you're right. Grilled meat's too strong. Fried chicken's good enough. I'm already happy with this!" David said, then added, "Abella, you're too skinny. Eat more fried chicken."
Abella smiled and grabbed some. She loved eating meat but never seemed to gain weight, probably because she was always drinking tea and lemon water.
"This is our first meal together, and I didn't expect it to be in a place like this. It's kinda memorable." David took big bites of fried chicken, thinking about his siblings outside, and felt a bit down.
Abella noticed and tried to cheer him up. "Yeah, the truth hurts, but it's better than being lied to. Grandpa, you took care of them for years out of brotherly love, but they wanted your life, Uncle Caleb's, Aunt Bonnie's, and your money."
Abella then pulled out her phone. "Let me add you on WhatsApp, Grandpa."
"Okay." David's mood lifted. He quickly took out his phone. "Do you want to scan my QR code, or should I scan yours?"
Abella laughed, surprised he knew so much. "Either way is fine."
"Then I'll scan yours." David scanned her WhatsApp QR code, sent a friend request, and after Abella accepted, he changed her nickname to 'Outstanding Abella.'
Abella sent him a file. "I copied all the chat records from Uncle Derek's butler Gino's phone and monitored his phone. I found out they were plotting tonight's action and that they were involved in several previous incidents where you and Grandma were in danger. I organized the information a bit, and it's all here. Grandpa, just treat it like reading the news. Don't get too angry. Your health is more important."
David was blown away by how capable Abella was, gathering so much evidence.
He had suspected his relatives were behind the previous incidents but couldn't find any proof.
He didn't expect Abella to find it all at once.
He read all the information, finished his drink in one go, and then opened the surveillance video Bonnie had sent him from the car.
"As a junior, he didn't even attend Derek's birthday party. Does he still see us elders in his eyes? Who does he think he is?"
"If you're not afraid of death and want to follow your husband, go ahead. But Abella is innocent. She was finally found by the Medici family and hasn't even enjoyed the wealth and glory yet."
The more David listened, the more shocked he became. It turned out his peers were such snakes behind his back!
Not only did they cause the plane crash that injured Caleb, but they also wanted Bonnie to transfer all her shares and assets to them and bullied Abella.
"In a wealthy family, is there any real affection?"
"For the sake of family ties, we will spare his life. He has been proud for half his life. It's time for him to see our pride, especially after his eldest son, whom he is so proud of, is dead. He will truly experience the flavors of life. I can already imagine his feelings later."
