Chapter 771 Scared The Hell Out Of Her

In the pitch-black night, Bonnie couldn't shake the image of Lola's tear-streaked face. "Did I really mess up with Lola? I mean, she's had the best education since forever. How could she end up a killer with that kind of upbringing?"

She mulled over what Caleb had said. Maybe it wasn't so far-fetched.

Maybe the real culprit was someone else.

She had wronged Lola.

Next morning, Bonnie woke up to find Caleb hadn't come back to bed. After freshening up, she realized he'd been up all night investigating.

Out in the garden, Caleb was grilling the household staff.

Bonnie strolled down the spiral staircase and joined him. "Why didn't you wake me up?"

She glanced at the group of servants. "Find anything?"

"Mrs. Harris, I swear I'm innocent," Maya, the servant who had taken Lola to the basement last night, sobbed. "Since you came to this house, I've been by your side, whether you were out or at home. You even got hurt saving me once. How could I ever betray you?"

Maya continued, tears streaming down her face, "Last night, someone wanted to see Ms. Medici. I thought since Ms. Abella Medici's identity was still a secret, maybe they meant Ms. Lola Medici."

Everyone thought Lola was Caleb and Bonnie's biological niece.

And Abella had just come back to the family, so her identity was hush-hush.

"So I took it upon myself to invite Ms. Lola Medici. Mrs. Harris, I didn't know it would mess up your plans. It's my fault, it's my fault." Maya kept bowing her head. "But I swear, I never meant to betray you."

Bonnie watched her cry and gently helped her up. "We've been through a lot together. I believe you."

Maya cried tears of relief. "Thank you, Mrs. Harris, for your trust. I'd never betray you. I owe you my life. I'll always be loyal to you."

"You all can go now."

"Yes, ma'am."

After everyone left, Bonnie turned to Caleb. "We're not getting anywhere with this. Have we checked the house's surveillance?"

Caleb nodded. "Yeah, we checked. No signs of tampering or deletion. The road surveillance nearby was also recording normally. No suspicious people came or went from the manor last night."

"Anything new in the basement?" Bonnie asked.

Since the basement was used for shady stuff, there were no cameras to avoid any footage falling into the wrong hands.

"Nothing yet."

Last night, Caleb had taken a few trusted guys, including a forensic expert, to inspect the basement. The clues matched what Abella had said: mechanical asphyxiation, ruling out any natural causes.

"Once Lola calms down, I'll talk to her," Caleb said. "Maybe she remembers something important, or we can find a clue in our conversation."

"What are you all plotting day and night?" David shouted, yawning as he walked over. "Lola was so freaked out last night she insisted on sleeping with Vanessa. I had to crash in the next room."

David didn't see this coming. He'd finally reunited with Vanessa, only to give up the bed. "I heard Lola woke up a bunch of times from nightmares."

Bonnie jumped in, "Did she say anything in her sleep?"

"I don't know. I wasn't the one sleeping with her," David said, hands behind his back. "Bonnie, Caleb, don't get mad at me for speaking up. I've never butted into your decisions or actions. Even though I don't always get what you're up to, I back you because I trust your judgment and skills."

Caleb and Bonnie got the hint and stayed quiet.

"Abella's finally back with us. We should make it up to her, but Lola's grown up under our watch too. Even if she messed up a bit, there's no need to come down on her so hard. You've scared her into having a psychological shadow. You've never treated her like this before." David thought Lola had just made a minor mistake and got a harsh scolding.

David went on, "We agreed to treat all the kids equally."

"What if someone hired a hitman to take out Abella?" Bonnie suddenly looked up and asked bluntly.

"What did you say?" David clutched his heart, looking like he couldn't catch his breath.

"Dad, chill. I'm just asking." Bonnie quickly went to pat his back.

"You said someone hired a killer to murder Abella? You scolded Lola so harshly last night because you think she's involved? So, Lola, she..." David was in shock.

Maybe it was too much for him, and his heart couldn't handle it. Even clutching his chest didn't help.

Since his heart surgery, his siblings had ticked him off several times. The last time, someone falsely accused Beauty Skincare Group's products of having issues, which had also upset him big time.

Abella had just told him during a check-up yesterday to keep his emotions stable and avoid extreme highs or lows.

But Bonnie's words made his heart feel like it was in a vice.

One was Lola, whom he'd loved for eighteen years, and the other was Abella, who had finally been found, saved him and Vanessa, contributed to the family, and whom he deeply cherished.

Both were his treasures, but Bonnie's words were like a punch to the gut.

Seeing his face change, Bonnie quickly said, "It's nothing. I was just asking. What I meant was, do you think it's only if Lola were involved in something as serious as hiring a killer that we could scold her like we did last night? If it were a minor mistake, there's no need to hold on to it. Is that what you mean?"

David took deep breaths and finally nodded after a while. "Bonnie, tell me straight, what happened last night?"

Seeing his condition, Bonnie said directly, "Nothing much. Lola stumbled upon the people I had locked in the basement and got scared. I scolded her and told her not to wander around."

David had known about the people locked in the basement for a long time. His two sons, Caleb and James, wouldn't have survived countless attempts on their lives without some means and determination.
