Chapter 951 Dead
"Why didn't you wake me up?" Dennis asked, sounding a bit annoyed.
The maid hesitated. In this house, no one dared to wake Dennis except Steven. But she didn't say anything, just replied, "I'll make sure to wake you next time."
Knowing that Abella had already eaten, Dennis didn't have much of an appetite. He took a few bites and then went to find Abella.
At that moment, Abella and Steven were about to check on Jacob, who was locked in the basement. Suddenly, a maid rushed in.
"Mr. Medici, Ms. Medici, Jacob hasn't moved for a long time." The maid's voice was urgent. "We didn't dare to open the door to check, but through the surveillance, we saw that he hadn't moved at all for a long time. It looks like he might be dead."
Abella and Steven immediately headed to the basement.
Jacob was lying on the ground. When Abella tried to go in, Steven stopped her. "Let me go first."
He was worried Jacob might be faking it, and Abella could be in danger.
Abella nodded. She watched as Steven approached and checked Jacob's breathing. After a moment, he said, "He's not breathing. His body is cold."
Abella went in to examine him. "He died about two hours ago, around 6:30 this morning. Did you notice anything unusual at that time?" She asked the two maids nearby.
The maids were terrified and shook their heads. "We've been watching him the whole time. We didn't notice anything unusual, and no one came in."
"Mr. Beckett Medici and Mrs. Medici were worried someone might try to rescue him, so they set up a tight security outside. If someone had poisoned him, we would have noticed something." The maids were on the verge of tears. They were scared of being blamed since it happened under their watch. They kept their heads down, and their bodies trembled.
"You've been watching him the whole time? You didn't leave at all?" Abella continued to question.
"We took turns going to the restroom, but one of us was always here. Ms. Medici, it wasn't us. We didn't kill him." The maids were so scared they were practically bowing.
They knew how important Jacob was to the Medici family. Now that he was dead, they were the prime suspects.
"When Mr. Hall brought him in last night, he was already unconscious. We can guarantee he never woke up."
"We've been watching the surveillance closely. At first, he was lying down but occasionally moved. Then he stopped moving for a long time. We thought he might be trying to trick us into going in."
"Since you weren't up yet, we didn't want to disturb you with our suspicions. We just kept watching the surveillance."
"Ms. Medici, his death has nothing to do with us. We're not his accomplices."
Their voices were shaky, almost crying, as they pleaded with Abella to believe them.
"I'm not accusing you. I'm just trying to figure out what happened. No need to be nervous," Abella reassured them. Then she turned to Steven. "I need to grab something."
Steven nodded and stayed by Jacob's side.
A moment later, Abella returned with her medical kit. She opened it, revealing needles and other tools.
She took out a thin needle and inserted it into Jacob's body. When she pulled it out, the tip was black.
"He was poisoned." Abella's conclusion made the maids even more panicked. How could he have been poisoned?
Under their watch, Jacob had been poisoned. When did it happen?
"Don't let this information get out," Abella instructed the maids calmly. "For the next few days, act like nothing happened."
"Yes," The maids responded, trembling.
"Alright, wipe your tears. If there's nothing else, go rest for a bit. Make sure no one sees you resting. I'll call you when I'm done."
The basement was large, with other rooms like a media room and a storage room.
There were also two small gardens, with light from the light wells falling on them.
"Avoid the gardens," Abella warned, worried someone might see from above.
"Yes," The maids agreed and left.
"Steven, I want to perform an autopsy to see what kind of poison it was and if we can find any clues," Abella said softly to Steven. "Tell Mom and Dad about this, but make sure no one else hears."
"Okay. Can you handle it alone? Do you need help?"
"No, I don't want to draw attention."
"Alright, come up when you're done." Steven gave a few instructions and left.
Abella closed the door, put on gloves, and took out her autopsy tools.
Meanwhile, Kimberly was in disbelief upon hearing that Jacob was dead. "Did Henry give him poison when he brought him over last night? Did he do it to prevent Jacob from suffering in our hands? Was this planned between them, or was it Henry's decision alone?"
Realizing Henry might have done this, Kimberly was furious.
Henry had promised an exchange, but secretly did this.
Jacob was the key to uncovering the truth about the hospital fire years ago.
But now, Jacob was dead, and all the clues ended here!
"Jacob is Lola's biological father. How could Henry really hand him over to us to suffer? So, either he's faking his death to trick us, or."
Before Beckett could finish, Steven said, "He's really dead. Abella's diagnosis is never wrong."
If Jacob were faking, Abella's medical expertise would have caught it.
"If he's really dead, it means Henry poisoned him before handing him over. Whether Jacob agreed or not is another matter."
"That Henry dared to trick us! I'm going to confront him!" Kimberly angrily dialed Henry's number.
At that moment, Henry was sitting on a bench outside the emergency room. Despite the many doctors, they couldn't save Lola.
The emergency room light had been on all night, and there was still no good news.
