Chapter 118 I Don't Know If She'll Forgive Me
"It's apparent that it was love at first sight," the reporter cleared his throat, "but who pursued whom first?"
Jasper glanced at Adeline. He was about to speak, but she beat him.
The woman smiled at the reporter and then into the camera. "I pursued him first. But when I pursued him, it wasn't for his status, background, or wealth. What mattered to me was him, just him.
"For him, I gave everything unreservedly; even knowing he didn't hold me in his heart, I was willing to fight the whole world for that slight glimmer of hope.
"I didn't care about accusations of being a gold-digger, nor the fierce objections from my family. The only thing that mattered was the chance he might reciprocate my feelings."
Her words caused Jasper's lips to press together tightly.
Looking past the almost perfect profile of the woman before him, he seemed to see Adeline as she was in the past.
Back then, to marry him, she did indeed make choices that were incomprehensible to others.
Her family, her relatives, her friends—they all lived in Las Vegas.
Yet, she had been willing to marry and move to Denver without regret, all for his sake.
She faced misunderstandings from others, complaints from her family, disdain and demands from the Fosters, as well as his indifference.
She bore it all in silence.
Yet, in the time they spent together, he had never shown her a shred of affection.
That man back then...
Why was he such a jerk?
"Um... Miss Wilson?” The reporter interrupted her timidly.
He lowered his voice and said, "You... you make Mr. Foster sound like a real scumbag. Today is supposed to be about showcasing love."
Adeline snapped back to reality.
Jasper did, too.
"Let me take it from here."
His voice, deep and magnetic, resonated gently, "She actually thinks I’m a scoundrel, and she's not wrong."
He looked at Adeline, his eyes dark and intense. "I truly have wronged her in many ways. I took her for granted and ignored her pain and sorrow. I thought I would be a good husband, but I never lived up to what a husband should be."
He was looking at Adeline, and yet he seemed distant.
The vision of Adeline's tears appeared in front of his eyes.
His gaze softened remarkably as he looked at her. "After she left, I suddenly realized that the most important person in my life was always her.
"But I don't know if she will ever forgive me."
His voice carried sincerity, and his attitude was genuine.
Catching his remorseful eyes, Adeline sniffled, quickly turning away.
Her nose and eyes stung with the onset of tears.
She knew it was all a facade, a lie!
Jasper was still the same heartless, ruthless man he'd always been.
He was an expert in pretense and a master of performance!
But no matter how flawed, he was still the man she'd once loved deeply and had given her all to.
She couldn't hold back.
Her tears refused to be contained.
"Miss Wilson, don't be sad. Mr. Foster realizes his mistakes, and you two have reconciled, right?"
The reporter offered Adeline a tissue with kindness.
After Adeline's emotions steadied, the reporter took a deep breath. "It's crystal clear to me now. You two are deeply in love with each other.
"Now, for the final question, how long have you two been together?"
Jasper glanced at Adeline indifferently. "One day."
The reporters were stunned.
After all that fuss, these two had been together... just for a day?
The reporters, with faces full of disbelief, filed out one by one.
Once the journalists had scattered, Jasper gave Adeline a cold glance, tossing a tissue her way. "Nice performance," he commented dryly.
Her teary eyes felt like a joke under his scrutiny.
Wiping away the tears with the offered tissue, her lips curved in a bitter smirk. "You're quite the actor yourself, Mr. Foster."
"I wasn't acting."
Jasper gazed at her intensely. "For a moment there, I saw Adeline in you."
She couldn't help but laugh. "So, Mr. Foster, you're saying that just now, those emotions were genuine?"
She didn't buy it!
Reading her like an open book, he stood up calmly. "Believe it or not, I don’t care," he said flatly, then walked away with long strides.
Adeline remained seated, unmoved.
After a few steps, he stopped. "Aren't you coming? Or have you changed your mind about the psychiatric ward?"
Startled, she leapt up. "Are we going now?"
"What else?"
Without looking back, Jasper sneered and said, "Since you're her friend..."
Adeline knew he would help her with anything she needed to do.
Including visiting Molly.
...
Adeline returned to her office before heading to the psychiatric hospital to see Molly.
It had been too hot that day, so she removed her coat, leaving her voice recorder in the pocket.
Upon her return, she found Mia Turner sitting at her desk, busy with something indistinct.
Caught off guard, the woman gave a sheepish smile and put down the blueprints Adeline had drawn.
"The touch of a master from overseas sure is something," Mia commented.
"It's just practice, nothing special," Adeline said casually, picking up her coat and leaving.
Watching her depart, Mia furrowed her brows. "Where are you going?"
"To visit an old friend." With those words and a deep breath, Adeline walked off with purposeful strides.
Mia watched her until she was out of sight. Then, with a sigh of relief, she returned to her computer to launch a surveillance program.
A red dot was slowly moving.
Narrowing her eyes, Mia's lips curled into a scheming smile.
Given Adeline's unique status and her connection to Jasper, she would track down Molly's whereabouts soon!
...
A sleek black Maserati pulled up outside a psychiatric hospital on the west side of town.
Adeline opened the car door and gazed at the imposing sign that read "Psychiatric Hospital." "I can't believe you locked her up here," she muttered.
Jasper was the most ruthless man she had ever encountered.
To ingratiate himself with Molly, he had orchestrated a cruel car crash.
And now, fearing Molly might impede his plans, he confined the woman he'd loved for years to a mental institution.
Who wouldn't fear such ruthlessness?
"It's just a temporary refuge for her," he claimed.
After all, Molly had plotted against Lauren and had nearly taken her life multiple times.
This was no small matter.
He needed to find a secure place to keep her until Adeline could return to deal with it personally.
Only a secluded and safe place would suffice.
Adeline couldn't help but scoff derisively, "Mr. Foster, your loyalty and devotion are truly remarkable. Even after she repeatedly tried to kill your daughter, you still consider her well-being."
Jasper glanced at Adeline impassively. "There's no need for such unpleasant words. She's still Adeline’s sister."
