Chapter 119 She Might Be Adeline!
Adeline laughed.
Her sister?
Who had ever seen a sister who carried her sibling's husband's child—intent on eradicating the elder sister?
Who knew of a sister who repeatedly schemed to kill her niece?
Sometimes, she even doubted if Molly was her parents' daughter.
Why was there such a chasm between them despite growing up together and receiving the same upbringing?
"Please, follow me."
The psychiatric hospital had been monitoring Molly around the clock with strict supervision.
Seeing them arrive, a staff member eagerly guided them inside.
"Miss Collins is in that room," said the staffer, leading Adeline and Jasper to a door at the end of the hallway. "The room is soundproof. We've had to restrain her with chains for her safety during episodes. You may go in now."
"Thank you."
After whispering her thanks to the staff, Adeline looked at Jasper coolly. "I'll go alone. I hope you won't eavesdrop on our conversation, Mr. Foster."
Jasper gave her a cold glance. "I'd never stoop to such things."
With that, the man elegantly sat on a bench in the distance, reclining gracefully and pulling out his phone to work.
After ensuring he wasn't eavesdropping, Adeline took a deep breath, opened the door, and walked in.
The hospital room only had a bed, a desk, and two chairs.
Molly, dressed in a hospital gown, was shackled at the wrists and ankles.
She sat disheveled on the bed.
Adeline paused at the doorway, eyeing the distance to gauge if Molly could reach her chair's location. Satisfied, she closed the door behind her and strode forward.
Hearing footsteps, Molly scowled and instinctively looked up.
The moment her eyes met Adeline's, they were clouded with hate.
She glared at Adeline, gritting her teeth. "Is it you?"
"It's me."
Adeline slipped a hand into her pocket and turned on the recorder.
She took a seat and said, "Surprised?"
"Very," replied Molly with a snort, sitting across from Adeline.
Hate glinted in her eyes as she fixed them on Adeline. "What are you here for? To gloat about your victory?"
"Sort of."
Adeline chuckled lightly. "Did you see the news today? If not, let me recap for you. Jasper and I, we're together now."
Molly clenched her jaw.
Finally, through gritted teeth, she spat out a few scornful words, "I always knew you were ambitious. You didn't come to Blue Bay as just a staffer. Constantly protecting that bastard child was only to gain Jasper's trust and be with him, right?"
"Exactly."
Adeline laughed softly. "Unfortunately, all your schemes fell short; you lost. Do you know where you went wrong?"
"If you cherished Lauren as much as I do, as if she were your daughter, maybe you would have been the one with Jasper now."
Molly's voice dropped to a cold laugh.
"Treat that harlot's daughter as my own? I'd rather die!"
"Why?" Adeline asked nonchalantly, supporting her chin with one hand and smiling faintly, "Isn't she your sister Adeline's daughter?
"Why then did you rig the Ferris wheel to fail, hoping it would kill her?
"And why hire someone to start a fire to burn us alive when she stayed with me?"
Molly glanced at the firmly shut door.
She smiled.
"The soundproofing is quite good here, I'm aware."
"Let me be straight with you: I could love any woman's child as my own and be kind to all kids. But when it comes to Adeline's, I just can't do it!"
Watching Molly finally reveal her true self, Adeline's heart tightened.
With a cold snicker and a narrowed gaze, she asked, "Why is that? Did Adeline ever wrong you?"
"She's never wronged me, but her mistake was being too perfect."
Molly glared at Adeline with a look that seemed to penetrate through her, casting into the distance.
Madness and mischief sparkled in the woman's eyes. "I've lived in Adeline's shadow my whole life. Everyone kept telling me I had to be like my exceptional sister.
"The moment I faltered, they said I wasn't good enough, that I didn't deserve to be Adeline's sister…"
Molly scoffed, "I've had enough of playing second to that kind of sister! That's why not only did I want to steal her man, I wanted her dead!
"If she hadn't been so damn lucky, she would have died six years ago!
"Now, not only is she alive, but she has the nerve to send her illegitimate child back into Jasper's life!
"Isn't she just trying to provoke me and claim her territory? I will kill that little brat; I will make sure she dies!"
Perhaps too long in the psychiatric ward had taken its toll, for when Molly spoke these words, her eyes were chilling and wild.
Witnessing her madness, Adeline let out a bitter laugh. "So, because of your jealousy, you're willing to ruin both Adeline's life and Lauren's?"
Molly just stared at her silently.
"I have nothing more to say."
With a smirk, Adeline turned off the recorder hidden in her pocket.
She stood up elegantly, looking down disdainfully at Molly's disheveled and haggard form. "So, it's all come back to you.
"You've put Adeline through so much and even tried to kill her child.
"So it was destined that the child you carried would never come to be."
With those words, she turned and strode out of the hospital room.
Molly was left in a daze.
The child Adeline had just mentioned...
Her child?
She had never been pregnant.
With wide eyes, it hit her.
Back when Adeline married Jasper, under immense pressure from the Foster family, she desperately sought remedies and treatments everywhere, anxious to bear Jasper a child.
So, she deliberately interweaved the suggestion of pregnancy into her conversations with Jasper while planning Adeline's death.
At that time, she hadn't known Adeline was expecting. She just thought the idea of pregnancy would get under her skin.
But she had never mentioned anything about a pregnancy to anyone else!
Molly was stupefied.
No wonder Adeline was so protective of Lauren.
No wonder Adeline was so wary of her.
No wonder Adeline always thought she and Jasper were indeed in love.
How could she have never considered this possibility?
That Adeline might be Adeline herself!
