Chapter 64 Do All Women Hold Grudges?
Adeline didn't know how she returned to Blue Bay.
Her heart ached, her nose was runny, and her mind was blank.
That evening, Bennett held a brief meeting with her, preparing to publicly expose Molly tomorrow at Jasper's announcement of Lauren's identity.
"Mommy." Bennett frowned at Adeline on the video call. "Is something bothering you?"
Adeline took a deep breath and replied, "It's nothing."
"Mommy saw Grandma today." Lauren piped up as she sat next to her, cuddling her stuffed bear. "Mommy even cried."
Then she expressed her dissatisfaction, "Although Grandma is very nice to me, the things she said made Mommy sad."
"At first, I liked Grandma a lot, but then I stopped liking her, just like I didn't like Great-Grandma... I feel like she..."
"Lauren!" Adeline furrowed her brows and interrupted her daughter. "You should rest now."
Even if Helen didn't trust her, she was still Adeline's biological mother. Adeline couldn't stand others speaking ill of Helen, and the same went for Lauren.
"Oh." Lauren's little face drooped. "Mommy, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to say bad things about Grandma."
Mommy was angry, so she must have done something wrong, but she was just speaking her mind. "I won't do it again."
Seeing her daughter's apologetic and timid face, Adeline's heart clenched.
She reached out and hugged Lauren tightly, saying, "I'm not mad at you. It's just... I'm in a bad mood."
"I know." Lauren gently stroked Adeline's back with her small hand. "I'm Mommy's little cotton jacket. I'll warm you up, so Mommy can be happy."
"If you're Mommy's little cotton jacket, then what am I? Am I Mommy's big coat?" Bennett looked at Lauren hugging Adeline through the video call, feeling a pang of jealousy.
"I'm so jealous! Well, I will always be older than you anyway!"
"Well, then I am Mommy's down jacket." At this moment, Lauren's necklace lit up, as Blake's playful voice came from across the ocean.
The words of her three children warmed Adeline's heart and made her laugh.
"But it's summer now. Are you sure you want me to wear so many layers?"
Lauren pouted, "Then I'll be Mommy's handheld fan!"
Bennett said, "I'll be Mommy's electric fan."
Blake said, "Then I can only be Mommy's air conditioner."
Lauren and Bennett were not happy. "Why do you have to be better than both of us?"
"Don't I have to be better than both of you?"
The three children argued through their communication devices.
Adeline sat on the carpet, listening to the voices of her little gems, and the gloom in her heart gradually dissipated.
In these six years, she had lost a lot; love, family, and all the relationships she had built over the past twenty years.
However, she had also gained much.
She gained a new life, a dear friend like Brandon, and...
The woman lowered her gaze, looking at Lauren who was arguing with the two communication devices.
She also gained a mature and steady Blake, a clever and quick-witted Bennett, and a thoughtful and lovely Lauren.
Thinking of her blessings, the woman walked over and hugged Lauren tightly.
"Take good care of yourself from now on, okay? If you encounter any problems, contact your brothers and me anytime."
Starting tomorrow, she would resign from her job at Blue Bay and officially set out on the path she had originally before.
"I will!" Lauren reached out and held Adeline's face with her small hands. "Mommy must take good care of herself too, eat well, and take care of herself and Bennett. Lauren is already six years old, and she understands things now!"
From the phone, came Bennett's disdainful voice, "A six-year-old girl dares to say she understands things."
From the necklace, Blake chuckled helplessly, "But aren't you also six? Have you forgotten? We are triplets!"
Bennett pouted and hummed.
"Hmph, Blake is still nice to me!" With hands on her hips, Lauren proudly tilted her head. "When Blake gets better, I will only go shopping with Blake and take Blake to eat delicious food!"
Bennett was feeling a little wronged, "Mommy!"
Adeline smiled helplessly, holding Lauren and continuing to chat with Bennett through the video call, while talking to Blake using the necklace as a communication tool.
Under the bright lights in the children's room, the image of the two women huddled together was surprisingly warm and harmonious.
In the back garden, Jasper frowned slightly as he watched the figures through the French window.
He leaned against the pillar and flicked away the cigarette in his hand.
This was already the fifth one.
He didn't know why, but every time he thought about Adeline leaving Blue Bay after tomorrow, he felt inexplicably restless.
He had been standing here watching Adeline and Lauren for a long time.
From the initial unease to laughter through tears, and now filled with reluctance and helplessness.
He could sense that she didn't want to leave Lauren, but she had to.
The man sighed restlessly and lit yet another cigarette.
He didn't understand what this woman was insisting on leaving.
Clearly, she didn't want to leave Lauren, didn't want to leave him, yet she insisted on proving her capabilities.
She set a departure date for herself, imposed so many restrictions on herself.
But it was clear that as long as Adeline came to him and told him she didn't want to leave, he could keep her.
But she didn't.
Not even once.
Why?
Was it because he had once wanted to drive her away?
This unconsciously reminded him of Adeline.
Before, that woman had always relied on him, was infatuated with him.
From the day she married him, she shared everything with him, talked to him about everything.
At that time, he didn't understand love, and he didn't even think he liked her.
So, he always grew impatient with her and tired of her chatter.
Later, there was a time when he lost his temper with her.
After that, Adeline never shared her thoughts with him again, never talked to him about what she had experienced.
It was as if overnight, she became a different person.
Although her infatuation and obsession with him didn't change in her eyes, she became silent and closed herself off.
He wasn't used to it.
He thought she was just throwing a tantrum, and it would pass after a while.
But... until she left him six years ago, she remained closed off to him.
The man closed his eyes and sighed with a bitter smile while holding the cigarette.
Were all women in this world so vengeful?
Or perhaps, vengeful women were the only ones he just happened to encounter?
With that in mind, he took out his phone and called Ryan.
Thirty minutes later, there was a knock on Adeline's door.
Ryan, still half-asleep, appeared at her door, yawning. "Adeline, do you still want to stay in Blue Bay?"
The woman raised an eyebrow lightly. "What's going on?"
"Mr. Foster wants me to tell you, that if you want to stay in Blue Bay and continue to care for Miss Lauren... then you can find him in his study. He's waiting for you there."
"Oh."
As soon as Ryan finished speaking, Adeline slammed the door shut with a loud bang.
"Hey!" Ryan frowned, raised his hand and knocked on the door. "What are you doing?"
From inside the room came the sound of the woman yawning.
"It's too late, go to sleep!"
"Aren't you going to find Sir?"
Even though there was no work tonight, Jasper insisted that Ryan find some files for him, just so he can wait for Adeline in the study.
And this is how she responds?
The woman's voice was lazy, "Not that free."
