Chapter 541 "Ryan, Get the Car Ready, We're Going to Neon City."
Outside the mental hospital.
Gary got word early in the morning that Jasper had shown up. He was so freaked out that he barely managed to throw on his clothes before rushing out to meet him.
"I need to see Adeline," Jasper demanded, striding into the hospital with a frosty look on his face.
Gary was sweating bullets. "Mr. Foster, Miss Wilson really doesn't want to see you..."
Jasper let out a cold snort. "I said, I want to see her!"
He shot Gary a chilling glare. "Who do you listen to, me or her?"
Jasper's icy stare made Gary shiver. Realizing he couldn't hide the truth any longer, Gary gritted his teeth and dropped to his knees. "Mr. Foster! I failed you! I didn't take good care of Adeline! She's gone."
Adeline had run away! Jasper shot up from his chair, grabbing Gary by the collar, his face twisted with rage. "Didn't you say you'd have more people guarding her? How did she get out?"
Gary had never seen Jasper this furious before. Panic set in, and he stammered, "I did assign more people. But that's exactly the problem."
Gary looked away, too scared to meet Jasper's angry eyes. "Those people pretended to be caregivers. In the middle of the night, when everyone was asleep, they swapped her out. Mr. Foster, you can't blame us! They said one of the caregivers had heatstroke, and we believed them. After they left, we checked, and there was a woman in Adeline's room who looked just like her! It was nighttime, and our people didn't want to wake Adeline, so they didn't check closely. We didn't realize she'd been swapped until morning."
Jasper's eyes narrowed. This was an organized rescue?
He let go of Gary's collar, and Gary fell to the ground. Jasper stepped around him and headed for the door. "Take me to the one pretending to be Adeline."
"Yeah, okay!" Gary scrambled to his feet and hurried after Jasper. "She's an older, and she won't say a word no matter what we ask her. She's really stubborn."
Ignoring Gary's rambling, Jasper walked into Adeline's ward. Inside, a woman in a striped hospital gown was leaning against the wall. Her hair was a mess, but her eyes were clear and elegant.
Seeing Jasper, the woman looked up and smiled. "Mr. Foster."
Jasper's pupils contracted. The woman pretending to be Adeline was actually Evelyn! The Evelyn that Jasper and Scott's people had been searching for all day!
Jasper stepped closer. "Evelyn, what are you doing here?"
"I came here on my own," Evelyn said with a calm smile. "I've spent time with Adeline. I can tell she's not sick. Since Scott misdiagnosed her and made her suffer here, I owe it to her to take her place."
Jasper frowned but stayed silent.
Gary, standing nearby, was too stunned to speak at first. Finally, he managed to stammer, "You're Dr. Smith's wife? How can you say he misdiagnosed Adeline? Dr. Smith has never made a misdiagnosis in his life!"
Evelyn scoffed. "Never? He just hid them better so no one noticed."
She glanced at Jasper. "Do you also think his diagnosis is correct and that Adeline is mentally ill?"
Jasper squinted his eyes, still saying nothing.
Evelyn's voice dripped with sarcasm. "So, Mr. Foster, you only care about the results, not the reality? You'd rather trust those cold diagnostic reports than the living, breathing people around you? Can't you tell who's really sick or who's not?"
Jasper's eyes darkened. He lowered his voice. "Evelyn, you shouldn't stay here. Dr. Smith has been looking for you all day."
"Really?" Evelyn smiled. "Then tell Scott I won't leave until he changes Adeline's diagnosis."
Evelyn's smile widened. "I've ignored his actions for too long. Blake was right; adults should take responsibility for their mistakes and correct them."
She looked up at Jasper. "Mr. Foster, I'm making up for my wrong decisions. What about you?"
Jasper shot her a cold glance. "That's none of your concern, Evelyn."
With that, he turned and strode out of the ward.
Gary hurried to catch up. "I think this Evelyn is also a bit unstable! Mr. Smith is the most respected doctor in the world. He's been practicing for over forty years and has never made a misdiagnosis! And his own wife doesn't believe him!"
Jasper squinted his eyes, speaking indifferently as he walked. "Find me another team to diagnose mental illness."
He hesitated for a moment, then added, "Find three, keep it under the radar. If anyone finds out, I'll shut down your hospital."
Three teams should cover all bases.
Gary's eyes widened in shock. "Mr. Foster, do you really believe what Evelyn said? You're questioning Dr. Smith's authority! If people find out, you'll be condemned by the entire medical community!"
Jasper rubbed his temples lightly. "Do you think I care?"
Gary pursed his lips and finally shut up.
After a long pause, he thought of another problem. "Mr. Foster, you want to re-diagnose Adeline. But we don't even know where she is now!"
Gary's words made Jasper frown slightly. He remembered the X-ray David had sent him that morning.
Jasper's eyes narrowed. "I think I know. Ryan, get the car ready; we're going to Neon City."
