Chapter 765 Will It Really Be Happiness?
Adeline lifted her head.
The memorial photo in front of her bore the name Wilford Phoebe.
Howard closed his eyes, his voice heavy. "This man was your uncle, my only family."
"After Esther died, the Foster family found my DNA under her fingernails and gathered a lot of so-called evidence that I had harmed her."
"They blamed Esther's death on me."
"So the Foster family began a crazed vendetta against the Phoebe family."
"At the time, I was in a constant state of mental breakdown from losing the woman I loved most. I was often out of my mind."
"Your uncle, my brother Wilford Phoebe, was trying to defend the Phoebe Group from the Foster family's attacks while also trying to explain things to them."
"One time, the Foster family finally relented and allowed him to meet with Lily... On his way back, he had a car accident. The cause was tampering by the Foster family."
"When we found your uncle's body... the crash site was a bloody mess. Apart from one leg, we couldn't find any other parts of his body."
Howard turned to look at Adeline. "Originally, after Esther died, when I was clear-headed, I wanted to investigate what really happened, to find out the true cause of her death."
"But after Wilford was killed by Lily... I knew it was pointless."
"This was a living, breathing person, my brother who grew up with me!"
"For his sake, I could never reconcile with the Foster family."
Howard looked at Adeline's face, "I know you never met your uncle, so you might not feel anything."
"But Jasper never met his aunt Esther either, and you saw how he treated me just to protect his family."
"I know you're pregnant and can't keep bowing."
"So you don't have to bow, but today, you must reflect here on whether you want to continue seeing Jasper!"
With that, Howard turned and left.
Soon, a servant brought Adeline milk, water, and a chair.
Along with the chair came photos of Wilford.
From his childhood to adulthood.
In every photo, he was smiling beside Howard.
They were indeed close brothers.
Even at Howard and Esther's wedding, Wilford was smiling, standing in the closest spot to Howard.
As Adeline flipped through the photos, she felt a mix of shock, melancholy, and helplessness.
She respected Lily.
But she also knew Lily was a vengeful person.
Killing Wilford was something she was entirely capable of.
Adeline closed her eyes, sitting in the memorial hall, looking at Wilford's photos, her heart aching as if pricked by needles.
The hatred between the Phoebe family and the Foster family was truly irreconcilable.
And she was a member of the Phoebe family, with Phoebe blood running through her veins.
Maybe she and Jasper were just not meant to be.
From the beginning, their relationship was fraught with obstacles.
After going through so much, she realized they should never have met or fallen in love.
All night, Adeline stayed in the memorial hall, facing the ancestors of the Phoebe family.
The next morning, Howard's people took her back to her bedroom.
Lying in bed, she vaguely heard a servant say that Zara and Howard had a big fight last night, and Zara was sent to the hospital again.
Adeline jumped out of bed, pushed open the door, and grabbed one of the servants. "My mom's in the hospital again?"
The servant hesitated, then nodded silently. "Mr. Phoebe and Mrs. Phoebe argued about Jasper coming to the house yesterday."
"Mrs. Phoebe kept saying you should be free to follow your heart... After they argued, Mrs. Phoebe fainted and was sent to the hospital overnight."
Adeline's heart sank.
She bit her lip, "Take me to see her."
The servant looked flustered.
"But Ms. Phoebe, you haven't slept all night... We suggest you..."
Adeline frowned, "My mom is sick, and I need to see her. Do I need your permission?"
The servant quickly fell silent, "That's not what we meant."
After exchanging glances, the servants finally stepped aside, letting Adeline out the door.
But as soon as she stepped out, Howard blocked her path.
Howard looked at her coldly, "You didn't sleep last night?"
"Where are you going without resting?"
Adeline frowned, "I'm going to see my mom."
Hearing this, Howard's frown deepened.
He narrowed his eyes, "She's stable. There's no rush."
"Go back to sleep!"
Howard's attitude made Adeline laugh bitterly.
"Mr. Phoebe, do you think I came back to the Phoebe family for you?"
"I came back for my poor mom."
"She's spent over twenty years on a man who doesn't love her. Now she's dying and gets no affection from him."
"If I, as her daughter, can't be by her side when something happens, she's truly pitiful!"
With that, Adeline pushed past him and left the Phoebe family mansion.
Howard stood there, watching her leave, his frown deepening.
The butler sighed, "Mr. Phoebe, you stayed by Mrs. Phoebe's side all night until she was out of danger. And now Ms. Phoebe misunderstands you... Should I go after her and explain?"
Howard narrowed his eyes, "Forget it."
He watched the direction Adeline had gone, "She has a bias against me. Explaining won't help."
"Have someone follow her."
"She's pregnant and hasn't slept all night. Her body might not handle it."
"Yes, sir."
When Adeline arrived at the hospital, Zara had just finished breakfast.
Oliver was cleaning up the dishes, sighing, "Mom, why do you do this?"
"Dad is stubborn. Why go against him?"
"And you know his hatred for the Foster family."
"Saying Adeline should leave the Phoebe family and be with Jasper... It's like walking into a trap."
Adeline stood outside the hospital room, hearing Oliver's earnest voice.
Her hand on the doorknob paused.
After a moment, Zara sighed, "I spent my life loving a man who never responded. That's my tragedy."
"But Adeline is different."
"Jasper loves her dearly. Her life is better than mine. How can I not support her?"
"But... don't you want Adeline to stay with you a bit longer?"
"I don't mind."
Zara coughed lightly, "I don't have much time left. Whether my last days are good or bad doesn't matter."
"I just want Adeline to be happy."
Oliver narrowed his eyes, "But Jasper also has a hatred for the Phoebe family."
"Since he found out Adeline is a Phoebe, things won't be the same."
"Do you really think Adeline will be happy if she leaves the Phoebe family?"
