Chapter 27 Pretty Children Can Be Deceiving
Lauren froze for a moment, realizing that she misspoke. She turned her face away, afraid to look at Jasper.
"Mommy now..."
Before she could finish her sentence, she caught sight of Adeline standing at the study door.
The girl's voice abruptly stopped.
Jasper turned his head to look at the woman standing at the door, his voice carrying a hint of displeasure, "What's the matter?"
"Mr. Foster," Adeline's face displayed no expression. "They said downstairs that breakfast is ready and asked when Lauren would eat."
"If you're hungry, go ahead and eat," he snapped at her impatiently, giving her a glance. "Once Lauren and I finish our business, we'll naturally come down to eat."
"Okay," she smiled and nodded, then turned and left without any hesitation.
After Adeline left, Jasper closed the study door and turned back to continue questioning Lauren, "You just said, what does your mommy look like now?"
Lauren hesitated, looking up at his face, "Mommy now...doesn't look good."
She tried her best to recall Adeline's appearance when she had just formed memories. "Mommy's face looks scary, all covered in scars and often wrapped in bandages, leaving only her eyes visible. Sometimes, when she takes off the bandages, you can see various scars on her face..."
She spoke, and her small body trembled involuntarily, "Anyway, Mommy is not very pretty..."
At first, when she was just beginning to understand things, Adeline's face wasn't as perfect as it is now.
Every time she saw her face beneath the bandages, she would be so scared that she couldn't sleep all night.
Whenever Lauren couldn't sleep because of seeing Mommy's face, Blake would carefully protect her in his embrace, saying, "Lauren, this is our Mommy, the person who is the best to us and closest to us in this world."
"No matter how she looks, we mustn't despise her or be afraid of her, understand?"
At that time, the naive Lauren didn't understand the meaning behind Blake's words.
Later, after Bennett carefully explained Mommy's ordeal to her, she understood.
Back then, Daddy was the person closest to Mommy, and his place in her heart was even more important than Mommy's place in Lauren's heart.
But he did such harm to Mommy.
Thinking about all this, Lauren raised her head and looked into Jasper's eyes, which seemed a bit unfamiliar and indifferent, "Daddy, now that Mommy has become an ugly monster, would you still want to find her?"
Jasper couldn't help but sigh at the woman's question, "No matter how she looks, she is still my wife."
After saying that, he raised his hand and stroked Lauren's hair as he asked, "Your Mommy... she only sent you back because of her appearance, she couldn't bear to appear herself, you know?"
Lauren nodded, "Yes. Mommy said she didn't want to see you. If it weren't for me, she would have had no relationship with you long ago."
Jasper's gaze gradually dimmed. He knew there must have been a reason why Adeline left him.
After three years of marriage, he admitted that he had never been a qualified husband. She married him with deep affection, but he never responded, which eventually corroded her feelings for him.
But even so, he didn't believe she would betray him, let alone foolishly leave with a pregnancy letter during a thunderstorm.
She loved the child so much, she wouldn't recklessly drive to the bridge to commit suicide, neglecting the child's well-being.
There must be some other reason.
But now, Adeline couldn't show her face because of her disfigurement, and Lauren was just a six-year-old child who understood nothing. It was like finding a needle in a haystack to figure out what happened back then.
Thinking of this, he sighed heavily, patted Lauren's back, and said, "If you can contact your Mommy, tell her that I have something important to discuss with her and ask her to reach out to me."
Lauren pursed her lips and remained silent. Seeing her troubled expression, Jasper no longer pressed her.
He lifted her up and went downstairs for breakfast.
In the restaurant downstairs, Adeline was sitting in a chair, exchanging messages with Bennett.
As soon as Lauren came down, she quickly put away her phone and sat next to Lauren.
By her side, she carefully served her breakfast.
"Auntie, don't just feed me, have some yourself," Lauren said.
Lauren picked up a vegetable and put it in Adeline's bowl, saying, "You've been losing weight recently."
Adeline smiled gently and continued to serve food to Lauren, "You need to grow, don't worry about me."
The two women, one big and one small, were like a loving mother and daughter, attending to each other's needs.
Looking at the scene before him, Jasper frowned slightly.
After breakfast, Lauren jumped down from the small chair and said, "I'm going back to my room!"
After speaking, the little girl bounded up the stairs.
Adeline sat on the chair, watching the swaying twin ponytails as she went upstairs, shaking her head helplessly.
After all, she was just a child, emotions coming and going quickly.
Judging from her appearance, she had probably forgotten most of what happened yesterday.
After a while, Adeline stood up and prepared to go upstairs.
"Wait."
As soon as the woman stood up, Jasper called out to her.
Adeline glanced at him and asked, "Mr. Foster, do you need something?"
"Yes," Jasper cleared his throat, "I want to cook a meal for Lauren myself."
He hadn't forgotten the words that the little boy said last night.
"If my real dad suddenly appeared, I hope he would cook delicious food for me, choose clothes for me, and tell me bedtime stories."
Although the boy and the girl were different, he should at least try for Lauren.
It had been almost a week since Lauren came back to him, and he had never sincerely given her a gift or done anything for her.
After what happened yesterday, he felt obligated to make it up to her.
Adeline looked at him blankly, "You... want to cook for Lauren?"
The man nodded silently, "Is it not allowed?"
"It's allowed," she stopped her footsteps to go upstairs and turned around, heading into the kitchen. "Let me teach you how to make scrambled eggs with tomatoes."
It was simple and delicious, and Lauren liked it too.
Based on her understanding of Jasper, she couldn't really expect him to learn any complicated dishes.
"Let’s do it then."
The man got up and followed her into the kitchen.
The kitchen was originally not very spacious, and Jasper was too tall and imposing. As soon as he entered, Adeline felt her breath being slightly constrained.
Taking a deep breath, she steadied herself and opened the fridge.
Not only were there no tomatoes at home, there were also no eggs.
Adeline shrugged, "I'll go buy groceries first, and then teach you later."
After speaking, she turned and walked towards the door.
Only when she left did she realize that Jasper had followed her outside.
"Let's go together," the man took out the car keys and walked towards the car. "I also need to buy groceries for Lauren."
"Pick up something else, while you're at it, be my advisor," Adeline had no choice but to go out with him.
The two of them first went to the fresh market to buy groceries.
Adeline pushed the shopping cart behind Jasper. Just a few steps out, they bumped into two people.
At that moment, Violet was pushing a shopping cart with Bennett sitting inside.
The two were arguing, "Lunch, let's have noodles! I make the best noodles!"
"No! We eat noodles every day, I'm tired of it no matter how good they are! And your noodles aren't that great either!"
"I'll make it differently for you today..."
Violet was arguing when she suddenly noticed the little one in the shopping cart had gone silent.
She snapped back to reality and took a closer look.
The woman standing next to Jasper looked familiar.
"Adeline!?"
