Chapter 486 What Exactly Is She?
Jasper's words made Adeline, who was faking being drunk, freeze up instantly.
Why was Jasper using such a sweet tone and saying those things to her?
Why would he say, "Were today's words too hurtful?"
So, was Ethan right? Did Jasper know Adeline was right next to Jason and purposely said those harsh things on the phone?
Thinking about it, Adeline squinted and kept up her drunk act, eyeing his sharp jawline.
She still remembered the first time Jasper held her like this. It was the day he took her to meet the Foster family elders.
Back then, Jasper was against the marriage the Foster family arranged and agreed to marry her to avoid marrying Evelyn.
Jasper took Adeline to Radiance Springs, brought her before the Foster family, and announced he intended to marry her.
"Adeline's background and appearance don't match you at all; we don't agree!"
"Exactly, Jasper, even if you don't marry Evelyn, you should find someone of equal status, right? Who is this Adeline that you want to marry her?"
That day, Adeline endured insults she had never faced before.
Jasper protected Adeline in his arms and proudly declared he was going to marry her, saying that in his heart, she was a thousand times better than Evelyn. In the end, Jasper also carried Adeline out of the Foster family in the same manner.
That day, Adeline was held in Jasper's arms, looking at his chiseled jawline and delicate features. She told herself repeatedly that he was the one. For the rest of her life, she belonged to him. But everything that happened later was beyond her expectations.
Now, she was once again held in his arms in the same manner.
The Jasper standing before her now overlapped with the man who had captured her heart years ago.
So many years had passed, yet his face seemed untouched by time—still clean and chiseled.
As if possessed, Adeline reached out and gently touched his delicate jawline.
The feeling of Adeline's soft fingertips brushing against his jawbone made Jasper, who was carrying her out, freeze.
The next second, Jasper reached out, grabbed her small hand, and placed it back by her side. "Don't move."
Taking advantage of pretending to be drunk, Adeline began to act recklessly.
Adeline reached out again to his jaw, gently stroking it. "I want to move."
Jasper frowned and pressed her hand down again.
She then repeated the motion several times.
Finally, Jasper simply stopped resisting, letting her little hand roam and knead his face.
In fact, Jasper didn't mind Adeline's hand moving around on his face.
But what Jasper minded was that every time Adeline's hand touched him, he had to suppress his natural reaction. So Jasper had to quicken his pace.
If Adeline continued to act so recklessly, he wouldn't be able to hold it together for long.
Outside the hotel, a black Maserati was quietly parked.
Jasper, who was holding the drunken Adeline, directly opened the back door and put her inside.
Her actions had made Jasper unbearably hot; he intended to throw her into the back seat and cool off in the front seat. But as he was about to leave, Adeline grabbed his tie.
Lying on the leather seat, Adeline half-squinted her drunken eyes, tightly gripping Jasper's tie, pulling him back onto her. She did it on purpose.
After all, everyone knew Adeline had bad behavior when drunk; maybe when she was really drunk, she would do even more outrageous things. So why didn't she take advantage of pretending to be drunk this time to do everything she usually doesn't dare to do?
Moreover, Adeline also wanted to see if Jasper still hated her so much when she was drunk.
Thinking of this, Adeline tightened her grip on the tie.
Jasper didn't want to be too rough and hurt her, so he had no choice but to be forced to lean over her.
Ryan, sitting in the driver's seat, was startled by what he saw in the rearview mirror, his eyes widening.
"Mr. Foster, need any help?" Ryan asked, clearly surprised.
Jasper was actually being forced by Adeline!
Jasper shot him a cold glare. "Just drive."
Ryan coughed lightly, quickly adjusted the rearview mirror to the side, and started the car.
Once the car was moving, Jasper took a deep breath, grabbed Adeline's hand that was clutching his tie, and restrained her. Then he held the wriggling Adeline tightly in his arms.
"Behave," Jasper said, frowning. "You never moved this much when you were drunk before."
Adeline silently pouted and finally stopped her actions.
Ryan, driving, chuckled softly. "Maybe Adeline drank something different this time. She used to be really chatty when she was drunk, but today she's surprisingly quiet and likes to move around."
Jasper glanced down at the woman in his arms.
After a moment, he turned his face to look out the window, his voice slightly hoarse. "Maybe Adeline doesn't want to talk to me."
Today, Jasper only wanted Adeline to give up on him, so she could leave Radiance Springs without any attachments.
But Jasper forgot that the things he said would be too much for Adeline to bear. Even Jason thought the words were hurtful. Maybe they were really hurtful? So much that even when drunk, Adeline didn't want to talk to him.
"Why?" Ryan was puzzled. "Didn't Adeline already know today that you were the one who found evidence for her and helped restore her personal image and honor? Logically, Adeline should be grateful to you. Why wouldn't she want to talk?"
Jasper sighed and tightened his arms around Adeline. "I deliberately said a lot of hurtful things to her today."
He looked at Adeline's downcast eyes, his voice carrying a hint of hoarseness amidst the indifference. "I don't want Adeline to have any gratitude towards me, nor do I want her to leave Radiance Springs with any lingering feelings for me. Since we're probably never going to see each other again, why leave Adeline with any good memories? Only hatred and disgust will ensure that Adeline never reminisces about the times she liked me, allowing her to start a new life."
Ryan somewhat understood Jasper's words, but he believed Jasper's decisions were always right. "You're right. After all, you've already promised Luna."
"Enough." Before Ryan could finish, Jasper interrupted him.
Jasper held Adeline's shoulders, closed his eyes, and leaned back against the leather seat. "Let me have a moment of peace."
This might be the last time he held her in his life.
But what Jasper didn't know was that Adeline, who had her head buried as if asleep, had a few tears sliding down her cheeks.
Ethan was right. Everything Jasper did was for her. It had nothing to do with Luna.
Adeline didn't know if Jasper did all this to repay her for taking care of him and liking him in the past, or if it was for some other reason.
But what Adeline knew was... This time, Jasper seemed to be seriously saying goodbye to her.
Jasper would rather have Adeline leave with hatred for him than have her think of him again in the future.
Just as Adeline felt a sense of happiness in her heart, Jasper's phone rang.
Jasper opened his eyes and answered, "Luna, I'm outside. Yes, I'll come back to be with you after I'm done. Don't be afraid. I'll continue telling you stories tonight."
Jasper's deep voice resonated through his chest, vibrating against Adeline's shoulder.
Adeline lowered her head, a trace of bitterness passing through her heart.
Even if he helped her and wanted to say a proper goodbye, what was the point? After taking care of her for an hour, Jasper might spend the whole night taking care of Luna.
Adeline thought, 'What do I mean to him, after all?'
