Chapter 421 I Won't Be Fooled Again
Adeline's question caught Vikram off guard for a sec.
He cleared his throat, trying to play it cool. "Oh, I was just talking. Let's go see Jasper."
With that, Vikram headed into the ward.
Adeline watched him go, her brow furrowing.
"Vikram's hiding something," Lauren, who hardly ever spoke, suddenly piped up. "It's got to do with Luna."
Adeline's jaw dropped.
Lauren had been mostly silent since her autism diagnosis. The doctors had tried everything to get her to talk, but nothing worked. And now, out of nowhere, she was speaking up?
Seeing Adeline's stunned look, Lauren bit her lip, a bit shy. "Let's go in."
Blake nodded, and they all grabbed Adeline's hand and followed Vikram into the room.
Jasper was lying there, pale and still, like he was just sleeping but also like he might never wake up.
Lauren's eyes filled with pain as she looked at him.
She bit her lip, reached out, and held one of Jasper's fingers. "Daddy, it's Lauren. Wake up and look at me."
Jasper's eyebrows twitched, but he didn't wake up.
Blake glanced at Adeline and whispered, "Mom, he looks really bad."
Then Blake joined Lauren, whispering in Jasper's ear.
Adeline stood frozen by the door, staring at Jasper's closed eyes.
She had loved this face for so many years.
She had also hated it, sometimes so much she wanted to tear his heart out.
But now, seeing him lying there, all she felt was heartache.
'How can he be like this?' she thought.
Just last night, he had shown up, throwing his weight around, telling her to stay away from Vikram.
And now, here he was, looking like he was at death's door.
She stared at him for a long time, then took a deep breath, walked over, and hugged Blake and Lauren. Her voice was icy. "Jasper, wake up. Blake and Lauren have been sick for so long without passing out. Do you think you're special? You just had a relapse. What's there to pretend about? When I got hit by a car and fell into the sea, the pain was a thousand times worse than what you're feeling now. In this room, anyone can complain; anyone can pass out, except you. You owe us so much, so you have to live to repay it."
Vikram's eyes widened in shock, looking from Adeline to Blake.
Jason had asked Adeline to wake up the comatose Jasper. But instead of trying to wake him, she was tearing into him.
Adeline sighed and kept laying into Jasper. "If you don't wake up, you might as well die now. When Blake and Lauren get better, I'll take them abroad and never come back to Radiance Springs. After you die, they'll never visit your grave. You can grow old alone with your Ms. Jones."
After that, Adeline took a deep breath, grabbed Blake and Lauren, and turned to leave. "Let's go."
She didn't owe him anything.
She would never forget what he had done to her and the kids.
Today, she had only brought the kids to see Jasper because of Vikram, her savior.
Now that they’d seen him and said their piece, there was no point in sticking around.
Otherwise, it’d look like Luna was right—that they were just here to fight over the inheritance.
"Adeline!" Jason, who’d been lurking in the shadows, finally stepped out and blocked her way. "You’re just gonna leave? Jasper drank himself into this mess because of you, and you just come here to yell at him and bounce? You’re so ungrateful!"
Adeline was a bit taken aback by Jason’s sudden appearance.
But then again, given how tight Jason and Jasper were, it made sense he’d be here while Jasper was out cold.
Adeline shot back, "For me? Jason, are you kidding? Jasper would drink himself stupid for me? When did I ever mean that much to him?"
To Jasper, she was always just an afterthought, both then and now.
If he’d ever cared, even a little, he wouldn’t have refused to pay for Blake and Lauren’s treatment.
He wouldn’t have crushed Mia’s company when she tried to help, forcing Mia to beg him.
His cruelty was plain as day.
Jason bit his lip, grabbed Adeline’s arm, and dragged her into the hallway.
"You got roses this morning, right?" Jason asked.
Adeline frowned, eyeing him suspiciously. "How do you know? Did you send them?"
Jason rolled his eyes and sighed. "Jasper sent them."
Adeline froze.
She was stunned and said stiffly, "How is that possible? "
"Why not?"Jason sighed, pulling out Jasper’s phone and showing her last night’s order. "Look."
Adeline squinted, took the phone, and glanced at it.
The order was for a ton of red roses, with a note to send all the roses from nearby cities to her office. It was definitely the flowers she got that morning.
Adeline was floored.
'Jasper actually sent meroses? What was he trying to do?' she thought.
Jason said, "He thought it’d make you happy."
Seeing the doubt in her eyes, Jason sighed again. "Jasper went straight to the bar with me after leaving your place last night. He said you told him you felt he never liked you. Everything he did for you went unnoticed; you never even felt it."
Jason sighed. "So he drank too much and ended up like this. He ordered the roses while he was drunk. He said he made you unhappy, made you sad and cry. But you used to tell him how to make you happy, so he did it."
Adeline held the phone, feeling her blood run cold.
She remembered when she first married Jasper, she’d often said how she envied other girls getting roses from their boyfriends.
She’d said if she got roses from him, she’d be so happy she’d forget all her troubles.
But every time she mentioned it, Jasper would just look at her coldly, calling her childish and saying she was too old to be asking for roses like a teenager.
Eventually, she stopped bringing it up.
But after all these years, he not only remembered but tried to make her happy this way while drunk?
Adeline bit her lip hard, then looked up at Jason with a mocking glance. "You’re lying to me again."
She’d been fooled by him once before.
He’d said Jasper loved her, liked her, and did things for her. But what happened? When she braved the rain to find him, she saw him hugging Luna.
Adeline said, "I won’t be fooled again."
