Chapter 706 Don't Get Caught in the Rain

Adeline's cold, emotionless actions left Jasper stunned.

He instinctively took a step back, his eyes locked on Adeline, the shock and sadness in them almost tangible.

Jasper's voice was hoarse, "Adeline... you..."

For the first time ever, Jasper's finely chiseled face showed a look of helplessness. "You're kidding, right?"

How could she want to stay here and get engaged to Brandon?

Hadn't they agreed that after today, he would take her home?

They had three kids, and so many years of missed feelings.

He hadn't even had the chance to make it up to her; how could she suddenly, without any warning, choose to marry Brandon?

Adeline took a deep breath, lifted her gaze, and looked steadily at Jasper, her eyes filled with icy determination.

"Mr. Foster, I'm not joking."

She looked at Jasper's sternly defined face and the exhaustion on it, and almost couldn't bring herself to say the harsh words.

Reflecting on all of his actions since arriving in Oceancrest City, Adeline hardened her resolve and continued in a frosty tone.

"If you think I'm joking, let me formally inform you that I, Adeline, am getting engaged to Brandon. The engagement party is tonight at the Crystal Heights Resort. If you have time, you're welcome to attend."

After saying this, she laughed mockingly, "But I guess you won't have time, right? I heard Oliver returned to Oceancrest City last night, and the Phoebe family has hopes of rising again. You'll probably be busy dealing with the Phoebe family tonight, so how could you have time to attend my engagement party? In your heart, your hatred for the Phoebe family is far more important than I am."

With that, Adeline took a deep breath, holding back the tears in her eyes, and turned around, "Anna, show him out!"

Anna nodded and quickly stepped forward, blocking Jasper's view of Adeline. "Sir, please."

Extreme confusion and despair filled Jasper's heart. He dodged around Anna, looking through the gap between her shoulders at Adeline's little black dress-clad back. "Adeline!"

Anna frowned, continuing to block Jasper, "Sir, Mrs. Adeline Torres said she doesn't want to see you."

Hearing that title, Jasper felt a sharp pang in his heart.

Exhausted and weak to the extreme, Jasper pushed Anna aside and strode into the inner courtyard, blocking Adeline's path. "Adeline! I..."

He forced himself to endure the discomfort in his body, his face pale, cold sweat on his forehead as he looked at Adeline.

"What did I do wrong that you want to marry Brandon?"

Jasper placed his hands on Adeline's shoulders, needing the support to keep himself standing.

His eyes were fixed on Adeline's face, showing rare sadness and anxiety.

"What did I do wrong? Tell me, and I'll change, okay?"

He was so tired his mind was stalling.

But he still remembered Adeline's words about not being as important as his hatred.

Jasper took a deep breath. "Adeline, you might have misunderstood me; you've always been more important than my hatred. I... I always wanted to bring you home, but I knew that if I didn't deal with the Phoebe family, if I didn't bring them down, I wouldn't be able to see you..."

"Enough!" Adeline cut him off, her tear-filled eyes hardening. "Not dealing with the Phoebe family means you can't see me? Jasper, what other excuses are you going to come up with for not caring about me? I told you from the beginning, I was in Oceancrest City, at the Torres Mansion, brought back by the Torres family! You've been in Oceancrest City for so long, and you've never cared about me, never looked for me!"

She bit her lip, her smile tinged with mockery, more self-mockery.

"I gave you so many chances. If you had taken even a little time from your revenge to come to the Torres Mansion to find me. Even if you couldn't find me or missed me, I would have been comforted knowing you cared. But Jasper, you never did! You even had time to meet with Daisy, the Phoebe family's daughter, but no time to come to the Torres Mansion to see me."

"Why are you here now? Because I agreed to marry Brandon. You finally realized that I wouldn't stand still forever, wouldn't hold on to my feelings for you forever, so you came, right?"

She shook off his hands from her shoulders.

"Mr. Foster, since you chose the Phoebe family over me. Then don't blame me for choosing Brandon, who cares more about me, over you."

With that, Adeline turned and left.

Jasper stood there, staring at her back, wanting to chase after her, but his legs buckled, drained of strength.

Ryan quickly rushed over to support him, "Mr. Foster!"

Adeline's heart ached as she heard Ryan's worried voice behind her.

She stopped, sniffed, "Mr. Foster, you look very tired. You should go back and rest early, don't waste time on me."

With that, she left without looking back.

Adeline hadn't yet entered the side villa when the door suddenly opened from the inside.

Brandon wheeled himself out. He glanced at Jasper, then at Adeline, and frowned.

"Adeline, you don't have to be so harsh. Mr. Foster came to see you because he can't let you go."

Brandon said as he wheeled himself over.

Adeline frowned, quickly grabbing Brandon's wheelchair, "Don't go over there."

But Brandon shook his head, "Adeline, I think you and Mr. Foster might really have a misunderstanding."

He pulled Adeline's hand away and wheeled himself over to Jasper, looking up at his pale face and the cold sweat on his forehead.

"Mr. Foster, please come in."

Brandon looked up at the sky, "It looks like it's going to rain soon. You don't look well, you shouldn't get caught in the rain."

Then he lowered his voice, leaning close to Jasper's ear, speaking in a voice only the two of them could hear.

"If you catch a cold in the rain, you might miss the grand engagement party between Adeline and me."
