Chapter 423 How is That Possible?
After Adeline watched over Jasper getting his nightly IV at the hospital, Mia called.
Hearing Adeline's reasons for sticking around to care for Jasper, Mia couldn't help but let out a big sigh. "You're saying a lot, but you still can't let him go, huh? All your excuses, they don't mean squat. Lauren's illness can be treated; she'll get better eventually. And with Jasper in a coma, no one can stop me from paying for Blake's treatment. I could easily drop a million bucks. I don't buy that you haven't thought of this. You just want a reason to stay and take care of him."
Mia sighed again. "Whatever. I got no right to judge. I was all hung up on that jerk Thomas too. Jasper might not have treated you great, but he's still better than that loser Thomas. But even if you stay to take care of him, don't get too wrapped up in it again."
With that, Mia hung up.
On the other end, Adeline held her phone and sighed deeply.
She thought, 'Mia's right. For Blake and Lauren, those are just excuses. But staying to take care of Jasper isn't just because I can't let him go.'
Later that evening, Jason sent her more videos and records.
Besides what Jason said last night and those roses, Jasper had actually done a lot for her.
When she was in a coma, Jasper not only brought Blake back from abroad but also used money to calm Andrew down.
Otherwise, Sebastian's dad Andrew would never have let her off for causing Sebastian's death, let alone helped her persuade Aurora.
And after Bennett passed away, Jasper spent nights digging through the ruins for pieces of Bennett's clothing.
Plus, the volunteer for Blake's bone marrow transplant was somehow connected to Jasper.
Jasper did all this stuff quietly without telling her.
Adeline sighed, looking at Jasper's chiseled face.
She realized she was finding it harder to understand Jasper.
Adeline thought, 'What kind of person is he really? Is he the cold and ruthless guy he seemed to be? Or is he the silent and stoic guy Jason described, who did all these things quietly?'
She couldn't figure it out.
So, she wanted to take care of him, wake him up, and have him explain why he did so much without telling her.
Why, despite caring so much about the kids, he refused to pay for their medical expenses and acted so cold and heartless.
Adeline took care of Jasper in the hospital for three days.
During these three days, she spent all her time in that small hospital room, except during work hours.
Even during her short lunch breaks, she'd come to check if Jasper had woken up.
On the third evening, Adeline looked at the time on her phone and sighed deeply.
Tomorrow, Blake would have the bone marrow transplant surgery.
If Jasper didn't wake up today, he might miss the most important day of Blake's life.
If something went wrong during Blake's surgery, he wouldn't even get a chance to see Blake again.
"Miss Wilson, don't sweat it. With a devoted wife like you, Mr. Foster's gotta wake up," the nurse said softly while pulling out Jasper's IV needle. "Mr. Foster has to wake up to repay all the care you've given him these past few days."
Adeline gave a small smile. "We're divorced."
They'd been divorced for six years. He even had a girlfriend. But in the past few days, Luna hadn't shown up at the hospital or the company.
Adeline thought, 'Maybe Luna really thinks he won't wake up?'
Ryan mentioned once when he came to see Jasper that Luna was sick and bedridden at home.
Though she seemed sad and distressed whenever her colleagues saw her, she never missed a meal and always got enough sleep.
Hearing Adeline's words, the nurse was momentarily stunned, then smiled helplessly. "Ms. Wilson, you must be joking. You two are so loving; how could you be divorced? I've seen young couples in love who aren't as close as you and Mr. Foster."
With that, the nurse packed up and left.
"Wait," Adeline called out to the nurse. "My son has an important surgery tomorrow. I'll be upstairs with him later. Please take care of Jasper tonight."
The nurse was momentarily stunned, then looked back at Adeline with a hint of pity. "Don't worry. They will both get better."
Adeline nodded.
After the nurse left, Adeline closed the door and carefully cleaned Jasper's body. Then she buttoned his shirt. "Jasper, if you don't wake up soon, you'll really miss Blake's surgery. The doctor said that although the transplant technique is mature, there are still risks. If Blake has a rejection reaction on the operating table, he might not make it."
She smiled bitterly. "Even now, you still won't wake up?"
Adeline sniffled. "If Blake really dies on the operating table, I wouldn't know how to go on living. What about Lauren? Can you wake up and help me take care of her? Shelikes you a lot, and I know you like her too. You would definitely take good care of her."
As Adeline rambled on, dressing Jasper and talking about the kids, there was a knock on the door.
It was Blake's attending physician, Freya.
Seeing Freya, Adeline quickly put Jasper down and turned to smile at her. "Ms. Bishop, what brings you here? I was just thinking of coming upstairs to talk to you about tomorrow's surgery after settling Jasper, and then checking on Blake."
She said a couple of sentences, then suddenly felt something was off because Freya's face was deathly pale.
In the afternoon, when she brought Blake and Lauren to the hospital, Freya had been confident that the surgery would be successful.
But now, Freya's expression made Adeline's heart race with alarm.
She wiped the smile off her face and looked seriously at Freya. "Ms. Bishop, what's wrong? Is there a problem with Blake's surgery tomorrow?"
"Yes." Freya closed her eyes and took a deep breath.
In all her years of practice, this was the first time she had encountered such a situation. Freya said, "The donor for Blake's bone marrow has refused to be admitted and refused the surgery."
Adeline took a step back, her arm hitting a water cup on the table, which fell to the ground with a deafening crash.
But she seemed not to hear it, staring blankly at Freya. "How is that possible?"
