Chapter 523 What Will She Think?
Adeline took Evelyn to grab some flowers, and then they hopped in a cab to the cemetery.
Since Caroline's tombstone wasn't there, they picked a quiet corner to start their memorial.
Adeline glanced at Evelyn, who looked totally drained and heartbroken.
Out of nowhere, she thought about herself.
When she thought Bennett had died, was she just like Evelyn? She must've been in so much pain, like her heart was ripped out.
"Caroline." Sitting on a stone, Evelyn looked up at the sky full of crows and finally broke down. "Mommy's so sorry; I let you down."
"Mommy's so, so sorry."
Seeing Evelyn's tear-streaked face made Adeline feel sad too.
Evelyn cried the whole time Adeline was with her at the cemetery.
Maybe because she trusted Adeline, Evelyn cried while sharing stories about Caroline's past.
By the time Evelyn finished, it was already past nine at night.
Seeing it was getting late, Adeline helped Evelyn and comforted her as they took a cab back to the hotel.
"My husband should be back at the hotel by now." Evelyn took a deep breath and lowered her voice after getting into the cab. "If you see him later, don't mention anything about this place."
Adeline nodded. "Your current husband, he..."
"He was my old teacher." A bitter smile crossed Evelyn's lips. "He liked me for years. We were each other's first love, but my family didn't approve because of his age and forced us apart. Later, I married Caroline's father. A few years ago, Caroline and her dad passed away one after the other. I met Scott again, so we got back together."
Evelyn, now in her fifties, closed her eyes. "Scott doesn't like me talking about my past or my daughter. He feels guilty for not protecting me back then, which led me to marry someone else, have someone else's daughter, and go through half a lifetime of hardships."
Evelyn's words made Adeline's heart ache a bit.
Before, Adeline couldn't figure out the connection between Lucas and Caroline's deaths and Dr. Smith.
But now, hearing Evelyn's story, Adeline had pieced most of it together. Maybe this medical titan, Dr.Scott Smith, wasn't as perfect as he seemed.
Soon, the cab pulled up at the Aurora Grand Hotel.
As soon as Adeline and Evelyn walked into the lobby, they saw a man waiting there.
Scott, just like Adeline had read, had white hair, gold-rimmed glasses, and a stern, cold look with an air of nobility. He had a frosty expression, hands behind his back, and he looked at Evelyn with a cold gaze. "Where did you go?"
Evelyn paused, smiled, and held Adeline's hand. "This is a new friend I met today; her name is Adeline. We went out for coffee."
"Coffee this late?" Scott gave Evelyn a cold look, then turned to Adeline, his voice arrogant. "Do you know what time it is? Go rest now!"
Evelyn quickly nodded humbly, let go of Adeline's hand, and walked over to hold Scott's arm. "I was bored waiting for you, so I went out. Let's go up and rest now."
After speaking, Evelyn smiled and said goodbye to Adeline.
"Wait." Just as Evelyn finished speaking, Adeline smiled and looked up. "Dr. Smith."
Adeline curled her lips and looked at the man beside Evelyn. "I've been waiting for you all day, hoping to get your opinion on a medical issue."
Scott's brows furrowed tightly at her words. He turned his head and snorted. "You waited all day and cozied up to my wife just to get a consultation? You're young but already so scheming!"
Evelyn, standing next to Scott, looked shocked, staring at Adeline.
Adeline stayed calm. "I heard this morning that Dr. Smith was coming to Radiance Springs, so I waited here. I met Evelyn by chance and had no idea she was your wife. But since she is, it seems like fate. Would you spare a few minutes to examine me?"
Scott snorted again, about to say something, but Evelyn, holding his arm, sighed. "Help her, please."
Hearing Evelyn, Scott was silent for a moment before finally entering the elevator with a cold face. "Follow me."
Adeline quickly followed, feeling excited.
Scott and Evelyn were staying in the best presidential suite at the Aurora Grand Hotel.
As soon as they entered, Evelyn poured coffee for Adeline and then sensibly went back to her room.
Adeline respectfully placed the prepared medical indicators and symptom descriptions of Luna in front of Scott. "Dr. Smith, these are my recent health indicators, doctors' evaluations, and my subjective descriptions. Please take a look and tell me what illness I have."
Scott frowned, looking disgusted as he picked up the documents she placed on the table.
Initially, his face was full of impatience, but as soon as he saw the contents, his expression turned serious.
After a while, Scott closed the file and threw it on the table. "This is not your medical record!"
Scott squinted his eyes, coldly staring at Adeline's face. "Who are you, and what do you want?"
Adeline pursed her lips, still smiling at him. "Dr. Smith, how do you know this isn't my medical record? Can't I have such a rare disease?"
Scott squinted his eyes, glanced in the direction of Evelyn's room to make sure she wouldn't come out, then he snorted coldly and laughed. "You're not here for a consultation; you're here to cause trouble."
Scott changed to a more comfortable position on the sofa. "I've already diagnosed the patient in this medical record. She has a terminal illness and has less than a year to live. If you bring this medical record again, my conclusion will be the same; it won't change."
His attitude clearly showed he knew Adeline's purpose.
Adeline squinted her eyes. "Dr. Smith, do you dare to guarantee with your career that your diagnosis of this patient is correct?"
"Of course." Scott sneered. "I stand by every word I say. She has a terminal illness, and there's no room for negotiation."
"As for you," he sneered, "I don't care what you're trying to do, but I'm telling you, don't waste your efforts. Even if you get close to my wife, I won't change my medical judgment."
Adeline laughed. "I didn't intentionally get close to Evelyn; it was just a coincidence. But, because of certain coincidences, I learned some things you are hiding from Evelyn. What do you think Evelyn would do if she knew that you were hiding the fact that you had become an accomplice to the person who murdered her daughter?"
Adeline's words made Scott's eyes suddenly turn cold!
