Chapter 168 A Moment of Evasion
"Jasper paused, his fingers tensing slightly around the glass. He hadn't expected Adeline to have such a connection with Brandon.
He looked up at Adeline with a deep gaze. ""Ms. Adeline, you seem quite popular.""
Adeline just frowned slightly and smiled. ""Thank you for the compliment, Mr. Jasper.""
She did not deny her relationship with Brandon.
This only escalated the irritation inside Jasper.
The thought of having Brandon, who was abroad, caring for her and Nash who lived next door and also cared for her, turned his mood sour.
He lifted his glass, downed the contents in one gulp.
Lauren was stunned to see him drink so quickly.
Before she could pour him another, Jasper grabbed the bottle and tipped it to his lips, draining it completely.
Under the shocked gazes of Adeline and the kids, he slammed the empty bottle on the table. ""Is there anymore?""
Bennett exchanged a look with Lauren and blurted, ""Plenty more!""
""I'll get them!"" Bennett declared, hopping off his chair and fetching two more bottles.
Adeline pursed her lips, giving Bennett a severe look. ""Stop it.""
""I'm not kidding. Isn't Mr. Jasper thirsty?"" Bennett opened the two bottles and placed them in front of Jasper. ""Please, Mr. Jasper.""
He was curious to see what this man looked like drunk.
Jasper did not even hesitate. Perhaps he was just too annoyed today.
There was nothing more frustrating than discovering that your wife has turned into the person you despise the most.
After waiting for six years, the woman he got back was nothing like the starry-eyed Tiffany he once knew, even pushing for divorce to be on the agenda.
He felt suffocated, helpless, all his passion extinguished.
Maybe he was too indifferent, or perhaps she had changed too much. Either way, everything was different from what he had imagined.
He downed bottle after bottle.
By the third bottle, he was already leaning weakly against the back of the dining chair. ""Anymore?""
""Yeah, there's more.""
Bennett furrowed his brows, about to dive down for another bottle, but was halted by Adeline's call.
She glared at Jasper with icy eyes. ""Trying to land yourself in the hospital?""
He had already been hospitalized once due to stomach issues.
Bennett stopped in his tracks and obediently returned to the dining table.
Taking a deep breath, Adeline still got up, supporting Jasper to the bedroom. She should've just left him on the couch; she didn't think Jasper deserved to sleep in her bed.
However, she feared a drunken Jasper might wander out and get into trouble. So, the bedroom was the safer option.
What Adeline hadn't anticipated was as soon as she helped him onto the bed, he pulled her close, pinning her beneath him.
The bedroom door was softly closed by a sneaky little hand.
Before she could resist, his lips, heavy with the scent of alcohol, captured hers.
She struggled to breathe under his intoxicating kiss.
After a while, he released her, his eyes glazed. ""Almost became Mrs. Clayton? What's missing?""
Adeline frowned, pushing him to break free. But he held her so tightly, she couldn't escape.
His kisses rained down like a storm.
Eventually, his husky voice rang in her ear. ""You're so wonderful. I'm so close to...""
The rest went unsaid.
Under Adeline's inquiring gaze, the drunken man let out a soft chuckle, pulling her tightly into his arms. ""Time to sleep.""
It was a night of entanglement.
The next morning, Adeline was jolted awake by a phone call.
It was her birth mother, Helen.
""Ms. Adeline."" There was eagerness in Helen's voice on the other end. ""I've got everything set up for the press conference at ten this morning. Ten at the sports complex, you have to be there. You promised me.""
Adeline frowned, a headache brewing. ""I know.""
""Don't forget, don't be late, and don't miss it!"" Helen had harped on it endlessly. ""I recorded everything you said to that fellow from Sunnyside in your office yesterday. If you don't show up today, I'll just have to release the recording to the press!""
Adeline's hand, clutching her phone, trembled slightly. A chill settled in her heart. ""You recorded it?""
""Of course.""
On the other end, Helen took a deep breath. ""I don't trust you. Only with the recording do I feel secure.""
Adeline closed her eyes.
She wanted to laugh but she couldn't even muster a smile.
After all, it was her own mother on the other line.
Adeline had always known what Helen was like. She wasn't the type to go around recording people's conversations.
Now, for Molly's sake, for the sake of pursuing Xavier Green's fortune, it seemed she was willing do anything.
After a long silence, the woman finally let out a chuckle. ""Very well. Mrs. Helen, you can rest assured, I'll definitely be there today.""
With that, she didn't even wait for a response from Helen and hung up the call on her own accord.
With a snap, Adeline tossed her phone onto the nightstand, then lay back, stretching out with a silent yawn.
As she extended her arms out, she brushed against another hand. To be exact, that hand had taken a hold of her arm.
Adeline jolted awake, her eyes snapping open.
It was Jasper holding her hand.
The man lay on the bed propped up on one elbow, the other hand clutching hers, gazing at her with an inscrutable look in his eyes.
Her mind froze for a brief moment.
A few seconds later, Adeline remembered last night. She had been intimate with him again.
Taking a deep breath, she withdrew her arm from his grasp. ""Why haven't you left?""
Jasper shifted to a more comfortable position against the headboard, his expression unchanged. ""Why should I leave?""
Adeline rolled her eyes. ""We've done what needed to be done, aren't you satisfied?""
Jasper was momentarily taken aback by her attitude. After a pause, he darkened his expression, not wishing to continue the discussion. ""Are you really going to that press conference today?""
Adeline raised an eyebrow. ""Of course, I am.""
""Didn't you hear? Mrs. Helen has already recorded the conversations from Sunnyside clarifying that we agreed to attend the press conference. If I don't show up today, she'll release the recording, and then we'll both be seen as untrustworthy scoundrels.""
After finishing her point, she pulled on her clothes, casting a cold glance at the man still in bed, ""What, Mr. Jasper, do you want to stop me?""
Jasper merely curved his lips into a wry smile. He casually reached over and grabbed Adeline's photo album from the nightstand, flipping through it as he spoke, ""Don't hold back. I just want to know the exact time, so I can make myself scarce."""
