Chapter 69 We Are Getting Married
Ryan fell silent; knowing that he couldn't answer his boss.
"Sir... I... have never seen madam."
As Jasper poured ice water on his face again, his movement paused slightly.
After a while, he forced a bitter smile, "I forget."
Ryan, his assistant, had only been with him for five years.
Adeline had left six years ago. Ryan had never seen her.
Seeing the disappointment in his boss's eyes, Ryan sighed faintly, "Sir, is it because you think Adeline resembles madam that you treat her differently?"
He racked his brains to find words that could comfort Jasper, "If that's the case, sir, you haven't really betrayed madam. There is no need to blame yourself like this..."
Jasper closed his eyes and remained silent.
Did they have similarities?
They did.
All too often, that woman gave him a familiar feeling.
But he also knew without uncertainty that she wasn't his wife.
The look in his wife's eyes conveyed admiration and radiance.
But Adeline's eyes were cold, indifferent, as if he were an insignificant passerby.
His Adeline had loved him to the extreme.
She had left her hometown and come to Denver to make a life with him.
She had even come close to severing ties with her beloved family for him.
Such emotions couldn't be erased in a short period of time.
Her willingness to give birth to Lauren for him indicated that she still had him in her heart, and she wouldn't glare at him the way Adeline does!
He knew perfectly well that Adeline wasn't his wife.
But still; he couldn't help himself.
Especially in moments like the one they just shared, when he had just kissed her...
If it weren't for Ryan's phone call, he would have definitely made a mistake.
This woman was far too dangerous.
She could arouse every impulsive nerve in him.
Splashing cold water on his face once again, Jasper took a deep breath and took the towel Ryan handed him, "Let's get to the venue."
Ryan pressed his lips together and sighed helplessly, watching his boss leave.
After a while, he caught up, "Sir, I know it is not place to say, however I do feel that I should say it."
Jasper's steps halted.
"You're so smart, you can't possibly not have thought of it. It's been six years since madam left. If she really wanted to come back, why hasn't she sent you any news for six years? Even now, Miss Lauren has been back for over a month, but madam still hasn't shown up… Her attitude is quite obvious. If you've truly fallen for Adeline... you don't have to blame yourself so much."
The two people had already been separated for six years. Perhaps madam had already found new love and a new life by now.
And yet, Jasper still felt guilty and tortured himself because he almost developed feelings for another woman.
The man lifted his gaze, looking into the distance with a distant and chilly tone, "She's angry with me. Angry that I haven't found her all these years."
It was as if he...
To Ryan, it seemed more like he was talking to himself, "She won't fall in love again, nor will she stop loving me."
She's just too angry. Angry at how deeply he had hurt her.
So, what he needed to do was to find her again.
Not be attracted to another woman.
Seeing his stubborn expression, Ryan knew he couldn't persuade him and sighed, "But sir... madam hasn't shown up for so long, are you really sure that she will appear after tonight?"
"She will," Jasper replied confidently and briskly walked off .
...
Grandma Foster's birthday banquet was held at a five-star hotel.
The Foster family had booked the entire hotel.
Not only the downstairs reception hall, but even the suite area upstairs had been reserved.
Everyone staying there was either a relative, friend, or partner associated with the Foster family.
Because it was Grandma Foster's 80th birthday, the number of guests was particularly high this year.
When Adeline brought Lauren in, the hotel's reception hall was already overcrowded.
It was the first time Lauren had seen so many people.
The little girl widened her eyes in astonishment and whispered, "Does our family... have this many friends?"
Adeline nodded, "I suppose so."
She had never known how many relatives and friends the Foster family actually had.
When she married Jasper, the Foster family only sent one representative to attend.
Her wedding was a simple and bittersweet affair.
But at that time, her heart and eyes were filled with Jasper, thinking that as long as he was there, life would be blissful.
Now, looking at the sea of people at the birthday banquet, she suddenly felt that she had been naive.
No wonder Jasper chose to announce Lauren's identity at Grandma Foster's birthday banquet.
Turns out, he also knew that the more people there were, the more grand and formal it would be.
Yet, the wedding he gave her was eerily desolate.
"Adeline." In the distance, Ryan had spotted her.
He hurriedly made his way through the crowd with his entourage. "Let me take care of Lauren. Later, she will make an appearance with Mr. Foster."
"You..." Ryan glanced deeply at Adeline, "Just relax a little, eat and drink as you please, find a place to rest. It's your last day, you should also enjoy yourself."
Adeline nodded, instructed Audrey to take good care of Lauren, and then turned around, disappearing into the crowd.
Being embraced by Audrey, Lauren watched Adeline's retreating figure amidst the crowd, enveloped by a heartbreaking sadness.
Audrey understood her sorrow.
"Shall we rest for a bit?" She gently cradled Lauren and whispered in her ear, "It won't be long before we see each other again. I have ways for you to secretly stay in touch with her."
Finally making Lauren feel a little better. She nestled her head on Audrey's shoulder and closed her eyes silently.
If... if only mommy and daddy could get along peacefully. She wanted to live happily with them both, just like other kids had...
...
"And yet we meet again, huh?" Adeline found a corner of the sofa and sat down, but before she could settle, a cold and familiar voice sounded beside her.
She didn't need to look to know it was Molly.
Adeline turned away and ignored her.
"I didn't think you would actually come tonight," Molly said coldly as she took a seat on the sofa opposite her. Her eyes, adorned with captivating makeup, looked at her insolently. "But it's good that you're here. If you hadn't come, how would you possibly see me and Jasper being happy?"
Adeline glanced at her with cold eyes.
Molly, was still wearing the same dress from earlier in the day, but her makeup was more refined, and her accessories more luxurious.
Of course, the jewelry was still fake.
After all, her income was not enough to afford real pieces worth millions of dollars.
"You don't know yet, do you?" Molly gracefully picked up a cocktail from the table and took a sip. "Tonight, Jasper will announce our wedding date. We're getting married."
