Chapter 298 I Used to Be This Silly Too

Thomas walked up to them, his steps slow and deliberate.

Adeline felt a chill the moment she saw his face. Her worst fears were confirmed. This was the same guy who tried to kill her years ago, prying her fingers off the railing and sending her into the icy water.

"Miss Wilson, hello," Thomas said, flashing a smile with unnervingly perfect teeth. He looked just like she remembered.

Adeline fought back a scream and stepped away. Jasper caught her, looking worried. "What's wrong?"

She tried to speak, but fear choked her. Thomas was a living nightmare, a reminder of her near-death experience.

"Maybe Miss Wilson is a bit overwhelmed to finally meet me," Thomas said smoothly, nodding at Jasper. "My sister was quite fond of Miss Wilson, always hoped I'd look after her." He turned back to Adeline, smiling. "Isn't that right, Miss Wilson?"

Adeline's throat tightened. She could only nod slightly. The fear was worse knowing Thomas was Jasper's weapon, the one who tried to kill her. She couldn't show her terror, couldn't let Jasper suspect anything.

"Well then, Miss Wilson, maybe we should exchange contact info?" Thomas suggested, pulling out his phone.

Adeline forced herself to stay calm. "Is that really necessary?" she whispered.

"I'm afraid so," Thomas replied, still smiling. "I've been visiting the mental hospital."

"They said for Mia's release, she needs at least two relatives or friends to vouch for her." He paused, looking at Adeline. "You and I seem to be the only ones."

It had been a while since Mia, for Thomas's sake, pretended to be Molly and stayed in the mental hospital.

If Mia hadn't gone in and replaced Molly, Molly wouldn't have been released, and wouldn't have kidnapped Bennett.

That time when Molly kidnapped Bennett, he was seriously injured.

While she understood why Mia did what she did, she couldn't forgive her for Bennett's kidnapping.

"Why rush to exchange numbers?" Tim cut in, loading the last bag into the van. "You'll see plenty of Miss Wilson at the Foster Group, Thomas. No need to scare her off."

Thomas chuckled. "You're right."

Adeline glanced at Jasper, her heart pounding.

"Tim's right," Jasper said calmly. "There's no other pressing assignment for him now, so security detail at the Foster Group will have to do."

Adeline's blood ran cold. Jasper's words confirmed her fears. Thomas was indeed the man he sent to kill her. The casual way he talked about it, like discussing the weather, sent shivers down her spine.

After a tense conversation, Thomas checked his watch. "Time to head to the airport." He jingled his car keys, inviting Adeline and Jasper. "There's room if you want to see them off." He looked at Adeline, something unreadable in his eyes. "I'm a very careful driver, Miss Wilson. No need to worry."

Adeline shook her head, avoiding his gaze. "It's late. I need to rest." She walked over to Tim and Tom, shaking their hands. "Take care of Bennett and Lauren for me, okay?"

"Of course, Miss Wilson," Tim said, shaking her hand firmly. "Bennett's our boss, and Lauren's like family. We'll look after them."

With a final goodbye to Jasper, Tim and Tom got into the van and drove off. Adeline exhaled a breath she didn't realize she was holding.

"Do you know Thomas?" Jasper's voice, low and close, startled her.

"Should I?" she replied, keeping her face neutral.

Jasper studied her, eyes narrowed. "You seemed surprised to see him."

Adeline pressed her lips together, searching for an excuse. "Just a little taken aback, that's all."

"Remember Mia?" he asked, his gaze steady. "The reporter who pretended to be an assistant at the Foster Group? The one who went to such lengths because Molly claimed to have info about Thomas." He paused, eyes boring into hers. "You know that story, right?"

Adeline knew he was talking about the incident with Thomas, the attempt on her life they both orchestrated. Molly had leverage over Mia because of it. She held his gaze, trying to read him, but his expression was blank.

"What about it?" she asked, keeping her voice even.

"Mia," Adeline continued, "she's the one who took Molly's place in the mental hospital."

Jasper's brow furrowed, recalling a distant memory. "And her connection to Thomas?"

"His sister," Adeline replied flatly. "His first love, more accurately."

She walked towards the waiting Maserati, recounting Mia's story in a detached tone. Sliding into the car, she met Jasper's gaze. "Don't you think she's foolish, Mr. Foster?"

Jasper's lips twitched in a humorless smile. "Foolish, indeed." He turned, his gaze intense. "So, your reaction to seeing Thomas was out of sympathy for Mia?"

"Something like that," she lied, her voice steady.

Jasper chuckled, a low rumble. "Sympathy for a lovesick girl? How unusual."

Adeline settled back in her seat, her gaze distant. "Maybe because I was once that foolish myself."

"Oh?" Jasper's interest was piqued. "Is that so?"

"Then you wouldn't mind indulging my curiosity, would you, Miss Wilson?" he asked, amused. "Tell me about this past love that made you as blind and foolish as Mia."
