Chapter 552 Luna Has Left the City
Adeline and Jasper hung around the accident scene for a good half hour before the fire department finally managed to cut Scott out of the wreck.
When they got him onto the ambulance, he was so weak he barely had a pulse.
But then, Scott's eyes lit up when he saw Adeline. He lifted his hand, motioning for her to come closer.
Adeline, still shaky from all the vomiting, slowly made her way to Scott's side and leaned in to hear him.
"I'm sorry to Evelyn," Scott whispered. "Tell her to live well. As for Luna's medical report, I have the real one. It's in the office of the hospital abroad where I caused Caroline and Lucas's deaths. Get it, and the truth will come out."
Right after saying that, Scott's eyes rolled back, and his hand dropped onto the stretcher.
The doctors quickly pushed Adeline aside and started working on Scott. "No breathing, no pulse. The patient has no vital signs. He's gone."
After ten minutes of trying, the emergency doctor called it. Scott was dead.
Adeline just stood there, feeling like she might pass out.
It was her first time seeing such a brutal car accident and her first time watching someone die right in front of her.
Just hours ago, Scott was fuming, saying he'd find Evelyn.
Out of nowhere, Adeline noticed an ambulance from the mental hospital parked nearby.
A middle-aged woman in a hospital gown stumbled out. It was Evelyn. She'd lost all her former grace, crying uncontrollably as she ran to Scott. She collapsed onto his lifeless body, wailing in grief.
Then it started to rain, but no one dared to interrupt Evelyn.
Evelyn cried for what felt like forever. Then, to everyone's shock, she pulled a fruit knife from her pocket and stabbed herself in the heart.
The ambulance lights flashed again.
This time, it was Evelyn who needed to be rushed to the hospital.
Adeline and Jasper quickly followed the ambulance back.
An hour later, Evelyn was pronounced dead too.
Hearing the news, Adeline almost couldn't stand.
In just a few hours, she'd seen two people die right in front of her.
She started to wonder if everything she'd done was worth it. If she hadn't pushed so hard to expose Luna's fake illness, would these two still be alive?
But Adeline never meant to hurt anyone. She just wanted Molly to come forward sooner, to bring Bennett and Sebastian back to her side. Was she wrong?
"You did nothing wrong," Jasper said, as if reading her mind. He sighed and hugged her. "Dr. Smith's accident was just that—an accident. Evelyn probably loved him too much and chose to follow him. None of this is your fault."
Adeline closed her eyes, feeling the warmth of Jasper's embrace.
She knew she should push him away. He had no right to hold her now. But she was so confused, helpless, and lost. She needed someone to lean on, anyone really. She just craved an embrace, no matter whose arms it was.
Adeline thought to herself, 'Just consider him a stranger.'
Right now, she just needed some warmth.
After what felt like forever, Adeline took a deep breath and mumbled into Jasper's chest, "I want to bury them."
Jasper nodded. "Okay. When the weather clears up, we'll find a chance to do it."
Jasper squinted. "We can use the plot I had prepared for Luna."
He had really thought Luna would die from her illness and had even bought a cemetery plot for her. But now it seemed like Luna wasn't going anywhere anytime soon.
Hearing Jasper mention Luna's name snapped Adeline back to reality.
She quickly pulled away from his embrace and wiped her tears. "Is Luna still in that ward?"
Adeline felt that Scott's death was probably no accident. Someone wanted to shut him up. And that person, if not Luna herself, was definitely her accomplice!
Adeline let go of Jasper and took the elevator to the eighteenth floor.
But to her surprise, Luna's ward was empty.
Not only was Luna gone, but the bodyguards who had been guarding her were also missing.
Adeline was shocked and frowned.
She turned to look at Jasper behind her.
Jasper looked just as confused.
The next second, Jasper pulled out his phone and dialed the head bodyguard.
The bodyguard's voice on the other end was shaky. "Luna was taken by Blake."
Jasper frowned. "How is that possible?"
Blake and Lauren were at the old country house with Lily. He had spoken to Blake that morning; Blake and Lauren were fine at the old house, with no mention of coming back! And even if Blake wanted to come back, how could he do it alone?
"But," the bodyguard's voice was instantly fearful, "we were sure it was Blake. He said to let Luna go, that he was taking her out to play. He also said if you were to blame us, he would step up."
"Ridiculous!" Jasper's voice was as cold as ice. "How long has Luna been gone?"
The bodyguard said, "More than two hours."
Jasper rubbed his aching temples. "You and your men, go settle accounts with the butler and get lost."
After saying that, he put down his phone and looked at Adeline with some helplessness. "Luna ran away."
Adeline bit her lip.
Luna running away now only made it more obvious that Scott's death was connected to her.
With a sigh, Jasper took out his phone again. "Ryan, check where Luna went after leaving the hospital."
Ten minutes later, Ryan called back.
Ryan's voice on the other end was anxious. "Mr. Foster, bad news. Luna left the city! Our surveillance and tracking show that after she left the city, she headed towards your old country house!"
At the same time, Adeline's phone rang.
It was an unknown number.
As soon as Adeline answered, she heard Luna's arrogant laughter. "Adeline, I am your benefactor; why do you treat me like this? Do you really want me to lose everything? Fine! If I have no way out, I'll take Blake's life. He wouldn't survive without me anyway!"
