Chapter 603 Just Like Six Years Ago
Under the moonlight, Lauren was fast asleep in her bed.
Bennett stood next to her, gripping a knife, his eyes locked on her face.
A bit further away, Blake lay in his bed, holding his small crossbow tightly.
Unlike Lauren, Blake didn't trust that Bennett was still the same person. Ever since Bennett lost his memory, he was a stranger until he got it back.
And he would never let his guard down around strangers.
The tension in the kids' room was thick. Silent smoke hung in the air.
After a while, Bennett sighed, put the knife away, and gently traced Lauren's face with his small hand.
Despite his grudge against the Foster family, he couldn't bring himself to hate the cheerful and innocent Lauren. He couldn't harden his heart against her.
After a long pause, Bennett took a deep breath, walked out of Lauren's tent, and casually tossed the knife into the trash can.
Then, he turned around and carefully climbed back into his bunk bed.
Below, Blake hesitated for a moment but finally put down his small crossbow.
Maybe this time, Lauren was right. Bennett was just Bennett, and he wouldn't change.
Stepping out of the engagement ceremony, Adeline immediately spotted Mia and Violet waiting outside.
Mia was sprawled on a bench, while Violet sat on the ground next to her.
Seeing Adeline, they both waved.
"Want to grab a drink?"
Looking at her two friends, Adeline felt her annoyance with Jasper melt away.
She smiled, "You both know I can't handle my liquor, and yet you want to take me drinking?"
Violet grinned, "We're not asking you to drink."
"Exactly," Mia shrugged. "We're gonna drink in front of you! You just need to come along and have fun!"
Adeline chuckled. She didn't really want to go home anyway, feeling all wound up.
Going out for a drink and having some fun with them sounded perfect.
Adeline figured Mia would take them to a bar, but she didn't expect Mia to clear out one of her own bars.
In the big, empty bar, it was just the three of them, not even a bartender in sight.
Violet grabbed a bottle from the liquor cabinet and sighed. "Mia, you evil capitalist, this is way too much."
Mia rolled her eyes and snatched the bottle back. "Drink it or leave it!"
Adeline sat back, watching them, and couldn't help but smile. These two rarely joked around like this.
Adeline knew Mia and Violet were trying to cheer her up. They didn't even ask why she agreed to get engaged to Rex at the ceremony.
They just knew she was in a bad mood and took her out for a drink, trying to make her happy.
Unlike Jasper, who just complained she didn't trust him.
Adeline gave a bitter smile, picked up a glass of red wine, and downed it.
After one glass, Adeline was drunk. She started rambling, acting silly, and crying while hugging Violet.
Mia and Violet exchanged a look and sighed.
It was hard not to feel sorry for her. Even though Adeline's marriage and engagement to Jasper were all for show, her happiness was clear as day to her friends.
Violet and Mia had even placed bets that Adeline and Jasper would end up together for real.
But who could have seen tonight's events coming?
Bennett turned out to be Molly and Jasper's kid. And the groom at the engagement ceremony got switched.
The two women stayed with Adeline all night.
The next morning, Adeline woke up still in the bar.
It was already ten in the morning.
The two women next to her were out cold, sleeping even more soundly than she had.
Adeline yawned, got up, and decided to grab some breakfast before waking them up. When she opened the bar door, she saw it was pouring rain outside.
The world looked freshly washed by the heavy rain. She frowned, debating whether to brave the rain for breakfast when her phone rang.
It was Lauren.
Adeline quickly answered, "Lauren."
"Mommy, it's raining so hard!"
Hearing her tearful voice, Adeline tensed up, "What's wrong? Daddy hasn't come home yet!"
Lauren's voice was sobbing. "Daddy didn't come home all night.
"He didn't come back this morning either. I asked Ryan where Daddy was, and he said Daddy was on the bridge.
"Daddy still hasn't come back.
"The rain has been pouring for a long time. Ryan just went to find Daddy, but Daddy still won't come down from the bridge!"
Lauren's voice grew more distressed. "Mommy, can you go check on him? His wound hasn't healed yet. If it gets worse due to the rain, what should we do?"
Adeline froze.
Jasper didn't come home last night? What was he doing on the bridge? And he stayed there all night!
She looked up at the heavy rain outside, her lips tightly pressed together.
Today's rain reminded her of the downpour six years ago when she had her car accident.
Suddenly, she stopped.
Could Jasper be thinking...
As soon as the thought crossed her mind, Adeline felt her blood pressure spike.
She bit her lip, "Lauren, I'm at The Velvet Lantern. Tell Ryan to come pick me up quickly. I'm going to find Jasper."
After getting Adeline's response, Lauren quickly nodded on the other end of the line. "Okay, I'll tell Ryan to pick you up right now! Thank you, Mommy!"
After saying that, Lauren hung up the phone.
Adeline stood at the bar door, looking at the heavy rain outside, biting her lips hard. After anxiously waiting for more than ten minutes, she finally saw Ryan arrive.
Adeline left a note for Mia and Violet, instructed the security guard at the door to take care of them, and then got into the car with Ryan.
The car sped towards the bridge in the pouring rain.
On the way, Ryan sighed while driving. "Mr. Foster has been sitting on the bridge since the banquet ended last night, all night, even in this heavy rain.
"Just like six years ago, there's nothing we can do!
"I even thought, if Mr. Foster keeps being so stubborn, I'll get Mr. Smith to help, and we'll knock him out and drag him home like we did six years ago!"
Ryan's words left Adeline stunned.
After a while, she bit her lip, "Jasper was on the bridge like this six years ago too?"
