Chapter 411 Deceiving Herself
Jasper was like, the big cheese in Radiance Springs.
Diana's words got everyone craning their necks, trying to spot Jasper. The crowd started to thin out a bit.
Adeline was down on the ground, and when she looked up, she saw Luna outside the crowd, clutching her chest and hanging onto Jasper's arm.
Flat on the cold ground, she watched helplessly as Jasper, who had been about to step in, stopped dead in his tracks because of something Luna said.
Adeline shut her eyes, feeling crushed.
Jasper must've seen what was going down and wanted to help. But with Luna whispering in his ear, he turned back.
Adeline thought, 'Is this the guy I've loved for so many years?'
He knew she was getting beat up, and he knew she couldn't take on Diana and Anthony alone. But with Luna's sweet talk, he just brushed it off and turned away.
Anthony's slap was about to land.
Adeline closed her eyes and stopped fighting.
Adeline thought, 'It's just some trash talk about my kid's death. It's just a beating. How could that compare to Luna's coughs and words? I'm nothing. In Jasper's heart, I'm nothing! I should've known better. I'm just a fool, still holding onto stupid hopes for Jasper.'
But she had her eyes shut for a while, and Anthony's slap never came.
No pain, just the sound of something heavy hitting the ground.
Then Anthony's wailing.
Adeline's body tensed up, and she instinctively opened her eyes.
From her angle, she saw a pair of long, straight legs of a young guy. He was rocking a sky-blue suit, his tall frame lean but packed with wild strength.
After coldly tossing the fat dude aside, Vikram kicked him hard in the gut. "What's the point of picking on a woman? If you got the guts, pick on me!"
After saying that, he shot a glance in Jasper's direction and gave him a look.
That evening, Vikram, originally planning to try his luck again by looking for Jasper at the company, happened to see Jasper and Luna together at the fresh market buying groceries.
Yesterday, during a phone call with his mom, Emily Das, she had mentioned he should keep an eye on Jasper's food preferences.
So he tailed them, wanting to see what Jasper and Luna were buying to figure out what Jasper liked to eat.
Unexpectedly, he saw Adeline getting bullied.
He stayed hidden, silently watching. Truth was, he was keeping tabs on Adeline's safety; but more importantly, he wanted to see how Jasper would react.
When Vikram saw Jasper wanting to step in but getting tangled up by Luna, he decided to jump in.
Jasper saw Vikram rush into the crowd and felt relieved, turning back to check on Luna.
Vikram's attitude now clearly showed he was looking for some credit.
Jasper squinted a bit, gave him a nod, and then went back to fussing over Luna.
Feeling all good after getting Jasper's nod, Vikram gave Anthony a few more kicks before squatting down to check on Adeline. "You okay?"
Adeline shook her head. "I'm fine."
She tried to get up, but she was too drained and weak to stand.
Vikram sighed. "You're like this and still saying you're fine?"
He rolled his eyes and yanked Adeline up from the ground.
Adeline's legs were jelly, so she had to lean on Vikram to keep from falling.
Vikram sighed again, glanced at Luna being pampered by Jasper, and then looked at Adeline, who was still trying to stand on her own.
For some reason, Vikram felt a pang of heartache.
He thought, 'Adeline's the one who really needs Jasper's care.'
On a whim, Vikram took a deep breath, steeled himself, and scooped Adeline up in his arms.
Adeline, suddenly airborne, yelped and looked up at Vikram, struggling. "What are you doing?"
Adeline said, "Put me down!"
Vikram replied, "Put you down? Can you even walk?"
Vikram rolled his eyes at her and carried Adeline through the crowd with big strides. "You're clearly too weak to stand, so why pretend to be tough?"
Adeline bit her lip and stayed quiet.
She really couldn't stand. She didn't know if it was because she was too mad earlier, or if she used too much force hitting Diana, or if it was too painful seeing Jasper with Luna.
When she looked up, she saw Jasper in the distance, holding Luna, feeding her water, and fussing over her.
Adeline's heart tightened a bit.
At that moment, Luna looked up and met Adeline's gaze.
Luna smirked at Adeline with contempt.
Adeline squinted her eyes.
"Stop looking." Seeing Adeline still staring at Luna and Jasper, Vikram sighed, his voice tinged with heartache. "Do you enjoy torturing yourself?"
Adeline snapped out of it and looked at Vikram's face. "How am I torturing myself?"
Vikram asked, "Seeing them together, doesn't it hurt?"
Adeline said, "It doesn't hurt. I stopped liking Jasper a long time ago."
"You're lying to yourself." Vikram sighed. "If you really didn't like him anymore, you wouldn't have hoped for him to save you just now."
Vikram's words made Adeline's body stiffen.
After a while, Adeline smiled bitterly and closed her eyes. "You're really annoying."
Vikram sighed helplessly.
He really wanted to tell Adeline the truth, to tell her that Jasper didn't like Luna at all!
But he couldn'tspill the beans; he needed something from Jasper.
If the truth came out and Luna refused to donate bone marrow, Blake would die.
Bennett was already dead, and no one had the right to take away Blake's hope of survival.
