Chapter 412 I Can't Compete with Her

Vikram hauled Adeline to the nearest hospital.

She wasn't banged up too bad, but she had some scrapes and bruises. It was summer, so her clothes were thin, and she got pressed into the ground.

Plus, the fresh market floor was filthy. If that gunk got into her cuts without getting cleaned up, it could get nasty.

At the hospital, the doc started patching up Adeline.

The disinfectant foamed up all white over her wounds.

Vikram's face twisted as he watched. Just looking at it made his own skin crawl.

But Adeline, while getting disinfected, didn't make a peep.

He was floored and sneakily pulled out his phone to record a quick video to send to Jasper.

When Jasper got Vikram's video, he was already heading home with Luna.

He was chilling in the back seat, with Luna's head resting on his lap, already snoozing.

Jasper opened the video and saw Adeline's pale face as the doc cleaned her up.

She didn't scream or cry like most girls would. She didn't even flinch.

Jasper sighed. Adeline was always like this. No matter the pain, she took it in stride.

Just like before, when he was so cold and heartless to her, she never complained, always making meals and waiting for him to come home.

She was so patient and understanding that he often took her for granted.

When he finally lost her, he regretted it, but it was too late.

"Jasper," Luna, lying on his lap, opened her eyes and sleepily asked, "What do you think of Vikram and Adeline?"

Luna said, "I think they make a great couple. You can tell Vikram already likes Adeline; otherwise, he wouldn't have rushed out like that. Should we help them?"

Jasper's hand holding the phone paused for a sec.

After a moment, Jasper put away his phone, looked down at Luna with a frown. "Luna, being sweet and naive is cool, but overdoing it can get on people's nerves."

He knew what Luna was up to.

But most of the time, it was harmless, so he let it slide.

After all, she had a rare disease, always at risk of an attack, and she had the bone marrow Blake needed.

But when she pushed it too far, he had to set her straight.

Luna was taken aback, the words she wanted to say stuck in her throat.

After a moment, she bit her lip and carefully got up from Jasper's lap, sitting upright beside him. "Jasper, I said something wrong."

She was testing Jasper's limits. Clearly, it didn't go as planned.

Jasper hadn't spoiled her to the point where she could say whatever she wanted.

Luna was bummed. But she apologized, "I didn't think it through just now. I just thought they looked good together."

Jasper squinted. "How do they look good together?"

"Adeline and I both have six-year-old kids, but Vikram is only nineteen, still a kid. In your eyes, that's a good match?"

Luna bit her lip, her nails digging into her palm. "I meant in appearance. Ms. Wilson looks very young."

Jasper sneered. "No matter how young she looks, she's still a mom of a six-year-old. How can she be a good match for a nineteen-year-old kid?"

Luna bit her lip, suddenly at a loss for words.

After a long pause, she took a deep breath. "Jasper, just think of me as someone who doesn't know how to talk."

"You're right; they don't match. Even if they did, we shouldn't help them."

"Even if they got together, we should break them up. Otherwise, seeing them together would make you uncomfortable."

After saying this, Luna blinked. "Right?"

Jasper's body stiffened a bit.

He turned his face to look at the scenery flying past the car window. "I wouldn't feel uncomfortable. Let's just leave it at that."

Luna lowered her head, a hint of malice flashing in her eyes.

Luna thought, 'Jasper keeps saying he doesn't care. Does he really not care? If he doesn't care, why would he mind me saying that Adeline and Vikram were a good match?'

At the hospital.

After the doc finished patching up Adeline, she finally got her strength back and could walk on her own.

Seeing it was getting late, she planned to grab a cab home after leaving the hospital.

Adeline said, "To Blue Bay."

Vikram chuckled and opened the car door to sit beside her. "To the nearest mall."

Adeline frowned and glanced at him. "What for?"

Vikram smirked, resting his arm on the car door, his eyes scanning Adeline's dirty and torn clothes. "If you go back dressed like this, you think Blake won't notice you got into a fight?"

Adeline looked down at her clothes.

Yeah, her clothes were torn and dirty from the earlier scuffle at the fresh market.

If she went home like this, Blake and Lauren would definitely notice.

Vikram said, "And, did you forget that all the groceries you bought at the market were used to hit people?"

"What did you prepare for Blake to eat this evening?"

Adeline was silent for a moment, then looked at the driver. "To the mall."

At the mall, Vikram and Adeline went their separate ways.

Adeline headed to the clothing section to buy clothes, while Vikram went to the food court to grab some takeout for Blake and Lauren.

It was rush hour, and the mall was packed.

Adeline searched for a while before finding a clothing store that wasn't too crowded.

To cover the scrapes on her body, she took her time picking out suitable clothes.

When she went to the fitting room to change, she heard someone in the next fitting room talking on the phone.

"Yeah, it's me, I'm Hazel."

"I'm in Radiance Springs now; can you help me find a job?"

"You mean the last one? Luna was so heartless!"

"I did everything she asked, caused trouble with the people she hated, and in the end, she just fired me and kicked me out, even withholding a month's salary!"

"She even said she doesn't want someone as morally inferior as me to stay by her side! But everything I did was orchestrated by her!"

"Yeah, I do have dirt on her. She's not really sick; I took care of her every day. How could I not know?"

"But what's the point? Her backing is too powerful. How can I, a mere nanny, possibly compete? Forget it! Help me find another job."

Hazel's voice was filled with anger and grievance.

Adeline was momentarily stunned before she suddenly realized that the person on the phone next door was indeed Hazel, the one who had a dispute with them at the hospital yesterday.
