Chapter 776 Shall We Drown Our Sorrows in Alcohol Together?
At eight in the morning, Adeline finally left Zara's hospital room after much persuasion from Oliver.
Howard took her place by Zara's side.
Despite their previous unpleasant encounters, Adeline thoughtfully reminded Howard to call the doctor and massage Zara regularly. Only after he assured her he would, did she feel at ease enough to leave.
As she closed the door, she saw Howard holding Zara's hand, tears seemingly glistening on his face.
Shutting the door, a wave of melancholy washed over Adeline.
Zara had once confided in her, expressing envy towards Esther.
When Esther passed away, Howard, a man like him, had actually shed tears for her.
Zara believed that for a man to cry for a woman, it meant she had truly touched his heart.
Now, with Zara in a coma, Howard was shedding tears for her.
Whether or not his tears meant Zara had entered his heart, he was indeed crying at this moment.
But who knew if Zara could feel it?
"What are you thinking about?"
Seeing Adeline lost in thought, Oliver frowned and asked indifferently.
Adeline snapped out of her daze, shook her head silently, and followed Oliver out of the hospital and into the car.
"I went to the police station this morning."
Sitting in the passenger seat, Oliver spoke to Adeline with a detached tone, "I saw Jasper. He still insists that Daisy is the one who killed our mother."
Adeline, eyes closed and slumped in the back seat, replied wearily, "I don't want to talk about him right now."
Oliver narrowed his eyes, "Father made you swear not to see Jasper. Have you extended that to not even mentioning him?"
Adeline let out a cold laugh, still not opening her eyes, "I'm really exhausted. I don't want to think about anything complicated."
She hadn't slept well for two nights.
The night before, she had been locked in the memorial hall by Howard, learning the dark secrets of the Foster family and Wilford's murder.
Last night, she had stayed at the hospital, watching over Zara, who had been stabbed in the chest by Jasper with a fruit knife.
Now, she was utterly drained, in no mood to discuss Jasper with Oliver.
Her feelings for Jasper, once so strong, were now incredibly complex.
She had never truly understood Jasper, nor could she confidently believe he wouldn't kill their mother.
He had disappointed her too many times.
So much so that she could no longer trust him.
Seeing her pale and worn-out state, Oliver sighed, swallowing back the words he wanted to say.
Soon, the car arrived at the Phoebe Mansion.
Adeline got out first.
She expected Oliver to follow her, considering he hadn't rested either.
But to her surprise, Oliver spoke to the driver instead. "Take me to the Phoebe Group. I need to handle my resignation."
Oliver's words made Adeline pause as she was about to close the car door.
"Resignation?"
She frowned at Oliver, "You're resigning from the Phoebe Group?"
"Yes."
Oliver leaned lazily against the leather seat, half-closing his eyes. "I had a fight with Father outside the police station this morning."
"Father thinks I'm unworthy of being a Phoebe, unworthy of being his son, so he demanded I step down from all my positions at the Phoebe Group."
Oliver's words made Adeline's frown deepen. "With Mom in this condition, Dad's been at the hospital with her. He doesn't have the time or energy to run the Phoebe Group."
Now, forcing Oliver to resign from the Phoebe Group... Was he really willing to let go of the legacy built over generations?
Seeing through Adeline's thoughts, Oliver smirked, his gaze indifferent. "Have you forgotten? The Phoebe family has a daughter, Daisy."
He shifted to a more comfortable position in the passenger seat. "I have Foster blood in me, and you're carrying a Foster child. With Mom in trouble, Dad certainly doesn't favor us."
"At this point, Daisy will undoubtedly rise to power... The Phoebe Group will soon be renamed the Collins Group!"
With that, Oliver closed the car door Adeline hadn't shut. "Go get some rest."
The black car sped away.
Adeline stood there, watching the car disappear, biting her lip.
Daisy.
She didn't believe Daisy considered herself a true Phoebe, nor did she believe Daisy could manage the Phoebe Group well... Taking a deep breath, she turned and went back into the mansion.
Lying in bed, she stared at the ceiling, Zara's kind and gentle face floating before her eyes.
Zara had once held Adeline's hand and said the Phoebe Group was something she had protected with her life.
Back then, Howard had been mentally unstable due to Esther and Wilford's deaths.
He couldn't continue running the Phoebe Group... Zara, heavily pregnant, had to both concoct medicine to stabilize Howard's erratic mind and manage the Phoebe Group.
Several times, the Phoebe Group had been pushed to the brink by the Foster family.
Each time, Zara, pregnant, had visited potential allies one by one, pleading for help... Eventually saving the Phoebe Group.
The Phoebe Group wasn't just the Phoebe family's lifeblood; it was half of Zara's life!
Now, Howard was letting Daisy, who lacked the capability and harbored ill intentions towards the Phoebe family, take over... Was he being fair to the mother still lying in a hospital bed?
Thinking of this, Adeline picked up her phone to call Howard.
Just as she dialed the first number, Oliver's call came through, "Stay out of the Phoebe Group's affairs."
"Howard is angry right now. If you talk to him, he'll be even more biased against you."
"Get some rest and don't worry about anything."
"The Phoebe family's assets won't be ruined by Daisy in just a few days."
With that, he hung up before Adeline could respond.
Holding her phone, Adeline took a deep breath and finally closed her eyes.
Oliver was right.
Because of the child she was carrying, she had no standing with Howard now.
She couldn't afford to anger him.
With that thought, she tried to reassure herself that the Phoebe Group wouldn't collapse and drifted off to sleep.
When Adeline woke up again, it was already evening.
Opening her eyes, she saw the dark night sky outside, yawned lazily, and went downstairs to find something to eat.
As soon as she opened the door, she saw Daisy standing in the hallway, holding two bottles of red wine.
Daisy smiled at Adeline, shaking the wine bottles. "Care for a drink?"
Adeline coldly walked past her. "With Mom in this state, I'm not in the mood for drinking."
Daisy grabbed Adeline's arm. "That's exactly why we should drink."
"Let's drown our sorrows together?"
