Chapter 622 Canceling the Engagement with Him
The place went dead quiet in a heartbeat.
Nathan and Rex, up on stage, were totally floored when Jasper suddenly showed up! They shot each other confused looks.
What the heck was happening? Hadn't Molly just said Jasper was still messed up from his injuries, stuck in the basement after that explosion, probably not gonna make it?
She also mentioned that even if he did survive, there was no way they'd dig him out anytime soon. So how on earth was Jasper standing there, looking perfectly fine, after just one night?
And wasn't Jasper supposed to be in a wheelchair because of his abdominal injury? How did he not only survive the explosion but also get up from his wheelchair?
None of this added up!
While Nathan and Rex were still in shock, Adeline had already pieced it together. It was all an act, Jasper's calm demeanor.
Everyone else just saw him walking towards the stage, looking unscathed. But Adeline noticed that every time Jasper took a step, his injured left leg would give out for a split second.
Clearly, his abdominal wound was still hurting him. He was pushing through the pain and hiding his discomfort to scare Nathan and Rex.
Adeline bit her lip, wanting to rush up and support him. But she couldn't. Jasper was doing his best to hide his injuries, and she couldn't blow his cover because of her concern.
Still, she couldn't help but walk down from the stage and wait for him by the steps.
When Jasper reached her, Adeline lowered her voice and asked, "What are you doing here, Jasper?"
Jasper leaned in close, his breath warm against her ear, and murmured in a deep, husky voice, "Didn't you ask Jason to pass on a message? You didn't want to handle such a deal alone. So, here I am."
After saying that, Jasper walked past her, slowly climbed the steps, and stood on the stage. Adeline's heart seemed to stop for a moment, then race. A warm blush spread across her cheeks.
When she left the rescue site earlier, she had indeed said those words to Jason. But at that time, she thought Jasper was in serious danger, so she said it.
Adeline's intention was that if Jasper was really in a bad spot, Jason could tell him those words, and maybe he'd hold on because of his sense of responsibility.
But Adeline didn't expect him to come out so quickly, walk to her side unscathed, and tell her, "You couldn't handle it, so I came."
Adeline felt her heart start to race inexplicably. It was like she was back to the time when she first fell for him. A few words from him could make her heart skip a beat.
Jasper stood on the stage, his eyes coldly sweeping over the reporters who were already scared stiff. "I had an accident yesterday and was trapped under rubble. My friends Jason and Adeline were doing everything they could to get experts and rescue teams to help me. I didn't expect."
He turned his gaze to Nathan behind him. "It's been 18 hours since the accident, and my so-called closest relatives haven't bothered to check on the rescue efforts. What's on their minds? They're thinking about how to declare me dead before I was rescued and take control of the Foster Group's assets."
Jasper's words caused an immediate uproar at the scene.
Nathan's and Rex's faces turned dark.
A reporter couldn't hold back and stood up to ask, "Mr. Nathan Foster, Mr. Jasper Foster said that it's been 18 hours since his accident, and you haven't been to the site or shown any concern for him. Is this true, or is he making it up to gain sympathy?"
Finally, Nathan's face showed a bit of color. He bit his lip and snapped, "Of course, it's all made up!"
He shot Jasper an angry glare, looking all regretful. "I don't know why Jasper would slander me! When he was buried in the rubble, Rex and I were definitely at the site! He just didn't know because he was underground!"
After saying that, he sighed and rubbed his temples helplessly, "I care about him the most, but he says this about me."
As he spoke, tears streamed down his face.
Jasper narrowed his eyes and sneered. He thought, 'Nathan and Rex should be in Hollywood with acting skills like that!'
Adeline asked, "Mr. Nathan Foster and Mr. Rex Foster, when exactly did you go to the rescue site?"
She smiled, walked up to the stage, and silently pushed a high-backed chair in front of Jasper. Jasper narrowed his eyes and leaned his left side against it. He was really struggling. In fact, he wasn't completely uninjured.
Even though Ryan had done his best to protect him, Jasper still tore open his abdominal wound while crawling out of the rubble.
Now the pain had spread throughout his body, and even breathing hurt. But at this moment, he couldn't give in.
Jasper had seen too many shameless people like Nathan and Rex. If they found out he was still injured, they would make a big deal out of it. Fortunately, Adeline thoughtfully provided him with support, alleviating his discomfort.
He leaned against the chair back, quietly watching Adeline debate with Nathan. Suddenly, he felt that at this moment, she was protecting him.
"I went with Rex last night!" Nathan snapped at Adeline's questioning, "Do we have to tell you when we went?"
Adeline smirked, "No need to tell me."
She took a deep breath, "I was at the rescue site all night and didn't sleep. Everyone there can testify. I just want to ask Mr. Nathan Foster and Mr. Rex Foster, when did you go? How far along was the rescue when you went? What was I doing when you went, and what was Jason doing?"
Adeline's series of questions made Nathan's face turn flustered. He couldn't answer a single one.
Rex's expression also turned awkward, "Adeline! You are my fiancée! Why are you always speaking up for Jasper?"
Adeline laughed, "What, can't answer my questions, so you start bringing up our relationship? Does our relationship affect the disgusting things you and your father did?"
After speaking, she took a deep breath. "I originally thought you were as noble as Jasper, but now I see you're a despicable person."
Adeline turned to the reporters below the stage. "I have an announcement to make. Because of Rex's immoral behavior, I have decided to cancel my engagement with him. From today on, I have no relationship with Rex!"
The reporters below the stage were in an uproar again.
Rex bit his lip hard. He thought, 'Adeline could cancel the engagement if she wanted to! But why say I had character issues!'
In his anger, he glanced at where Adeline was standing.
She stood at the edge of the stage, which was about 10 feet high. She was so thin that if she fell, she would likely break a bone or end up in the hospital.
Thinking of this, Rex rushed up quickly.
