Chapter 38 Fire That Woman
Throughout the entire night, Adeline couldn't sleep well.
Her dreams were filled with recurring memories of her past experiences with Jasper.
The excitement she felt upon their first encounter, the happiness they shared while taking wedding photos, their rushed wedding...
In her dreams, she kept asking Jasper why.
Why?
Why would he discard her love completely?
When she woke up, tears had soaked her pillow.
The bitterness of not being loved in a relationship was hard to let go of, even after so many years.
"Mummy..."
Lauren stood by her bed, holding tissues in her hands and carefully wiping her tears. "Did Daddy upset you again?"
Adeline closed her eyes and pulled Lauren into her arms.
She held the warm body of her little girl and felt herself gaining strength.
For the past six years, her three children had given her hope to keep going.
No matter what, she wouldn't give up on them.
"Mummy, don't cry."
Lauren gently patted Adeline's back, comforting her in a soft voice. "No matter what, me and my two brothers will always stand by your side. Don't be sad."
The serious tone of the little girl warmed Adeline's heart.
The mother and daughter held each other for a long time.
Soon, Ryan knocked on the door.
"Adeline, are you awake?"
Adeline frowned and pushed Lauren away to open the door. "What's the matter?"
Ryan stood at the door with a troubled expression. "If you're awake, could you cook some ginger soup for the master? He has an important meeting later, but he drank last night and still can't get over the hangover. It's too early now, and the other servants in the house haven't started work, so I could only come to you."
Adeline nodded. "Alright."
She turned and took a jacket before going downstairs.
In the kitchen, she put the ingredients for the ginger soup into the pot and started making breakfast for Lauren.
Ryan stood at the kitchen doorway, hesitating to speak.
"If you have something else to say, say it," she said in a calm voice without even looking up.
Embarrassment appeared on Ryan's face.
After a while, he raised his head and looked at Adeline's almost perfect profile. "Yesterday at Miss Collins's house, I lied."
Adeline's hand holding the knife trembled slightly.
After a moment, she continued with her task. "What lie did you tell?"
"Actually, what happened yesterday was planned by Miss Collins." Ryan took a deep breath. He could tell that Adeline had been crying.
Considering what happened yesterday when Adeline walked out of Molly's house without a word, he guessed that it must have affected her.
So he needed to explain it to her. "According to the information I found, the money was indeed transferred from Miss Collins's personal account."
A bitter smile crept up on Adeline's lips.
But she still pretended to be indifferent and continued cutting the vegetables. "Then why did you say it was the company's account?"
Without a doubt, it must have been Jasper's instruction.
"Don't you understand?" Ryan took a deep breath. "Miss Collins is Mr. Foster's fiancée. She will be the mistress of this household in the future. There are some things we all know, and there's no need to embarrass her in public. Besides, the matter has been perfectly resolved, and hardly anyone is discussing it online anymore."
After saying that, he looked at Adeline seriously. "Don't take it too seriously. It's normal for us servants to suffer a little injustice in front of our masters."
"Is it normal?" Adeline stopped cutting with her knife, turned off the stove, and poured out the ginger soup. "So, because I am a servant, I am destined to be bullied by Molly and not be able to resist, is that it?"
Even when she was the mistress of this house six years ago, nobody really respected her.
Ryan paused. "Yes."
"That's your theory." Adeline searched for spoons and trays in the cupboard. "I have suffered enough injustice in the first half of my life. I don't want to suffer more in the future."
After saying that, she carried the tray and walked past Ryan, heading upstairs.
Ryan stood there, watching her slender figure, the light in his eyes gradually dimming.
Who would willingly suffer injustice if given a choice?
But if she didn't please Molly now, it would be too late when she married into the family later.
Master Bedroom
When Adeline pushed the door open, Jasper was leaning against the head of the bed and looking at his phone.
Last night's hangover made it difficult for him to even get out of bed.
His head was cloudy, and he couldn't remember what happened yesterday.
Seeing her come in, the man frowned and put down his phone.
Thinking about his actions last night, Adeline's expression grew colder.
She entered the room with a cold face and handed him the ginger soup.
The man twisted his brows lightly and looked at her swollen eyes. "Did you cry?"
The same question again? Adeline laughed coldly.
She raised her eyes and looked at him, her voice icy and mocking. "Last night in the living room, Mr. Foster spoke to me the exact same way. Is Mr. Foster planning to use the same tactic again, pin me down in the next second, and then tell me about your encounter with madam?"
Jasper furrowed his brows.
He couldn't remember anything from last night.
"Did I mention my wife to you last night?"
"Yes." Seeing that he didn't take the ginger soup, Adeline placed it on the bedside table. "Mr. Foster also said that you and Miss Collins got engaged because of Mrs. Foster."
"Mrs. Foster is truly a remarkable person. She went to her deathbed while pregnant, completely disregarding the lives of her three children in her belly, but she didn't forget to leave a letter asking you to marry her sister. Those who know think Mrs. Foster is great, but those who don't would think you and Miss Collins got engaged because you had a scandalous relationship with Miss Collins and someone was killed to save that relationship."
This is what she has been bottling up for a long time.
She has wanted to say this to him for a long time.
She wanted to see his reaction when he heard these words. She wanted to see his confusion when his secrets were exposed.
But she was disappointed.
The man did not panic, nor was he at a loss.
He looked at her face coldly and said, "Who allowed you to meddle in my family affairs? You're just a servant."
He didn't need to explain too much to a servant.
But it was undeniable that her words made him uncomfortable.
Very uncomfortable.
For the past six years, he had missed Adeline day and night.
He couldn't accept anyone slandering or misunderstanding his feelings for her.
"Yes, I'm just a servant." Adeline forced a bitter smile, and a hint of coldness appeared in her eyes. "I have no right to discuss the master's family affairs, nor do I have the right to seek justice for myself. Even if I'm secretly photographed and insulted, I can only endure it. After all, the future mistress of this house will be Miss Collins!"
After speaking, she didn't care about his expression and left.
Jasper watched the slammed door, his brows furrowing.
After a while, he remembered the meeting that would take place later.
He picked up the ginger soup from the bedside table and drank it.
This taste...
Suddenly, he opened his sharp eyes.
