Chapter 310 It's Time to Catch Up

Thomas's words hit Adeline hard, sending chills down her spine. He shouldn't recognize her with her new face and identity.

But since they got in the taxi, he'd been hinting at that night six years ago. Casual mentions of driving skills, trucks, and now, a pointed comment about bad memories.

'Is it just a coincidence? Or does he suspect something?' she wondered.

As the taxi pulled away, Adeline pretended to sleep, but her mind was racing. She peeked at Thomas through the rearview mirror. He was watching her, calculating.

The car was thick with tension.

"Is this your girlfriend?" the driver asked, sensing the weird vibe.

"Hardly," Thomas scoffed, glaring at Adeline. "Someone like her? Never."

The driver chuckled. "She's beautiful, though."

"Plastic surgery," Thomas sneered. "Amazing what a good surgeon can do."

The driver paused. "Yeah, it's common now. Everyone wants to look their best."

Thomas snorted. "True, but some people are better off forgotten." He shot Adeline another venomous look.

Adeline kept her eyes closed, doubts growing.

'How does he know about the surgery? The doctors were the best. My appearance is totally different.'

'No way Thomas could know. Unless someone told him.'

'If he knows about the surgery, does he know my true identity? Does he remember me as the victim, not the perpetrator?'

The thought sent a shiver down her spine.

Suddenly, Thomas's phone rang, breaking the silence.

"Mrs. Foster," he answered casually, not caring if Adeline heard. "I thought we agreed not to contact each other for now."

He listened. "Yes, of course. I'll be careful not to mention you in front of her."

Another pause. "Don't worry, I'll wait for your call."

He hung up and resumed chatting with the driver like nothing happened.

Adeline lay still, heart pounding. Stella had wasted no time. In just two days, she'd reconnected with Thomas and recruited him. Her efficiency was both impressive and terrifying.

Adeline shifted, looking out the window. Six years ago, Thomas was hired to kill her. Now, he was taking orders from Stella, the woman with her old face.

What was Stella's game? She couldn't have revealed her true identity to Thomas. Too risky.

So, she was still posing as Adeline from six years ago.

From Thomas's remarks and his attempts to bring up that night, he clearly suspected a connection between Adeline and those events.

Since he didn't see her as the victim, he must see her as the perpetrator.

Adeline let out a bitter laugh. It was almost funny. Six years ago, she nearly died at Thomas's hands, along with her unborn child. Now, he saw her as Jasper's accomplice.

Fate had a twisted sense of humor.

The taxi stopped outside the psychiatric hospital. Thomas jumped out, leaving Adeline behind. The driver, surprised by his rudeness, came around to wake her.

Adeline, who hadn't been sleeping, watched Thomas through the rear window. His disdain was clear. He treated her with contempt, just like anyone he thought was beneath him.

It was almost amusing. Back then, he was just a hired thug, a pawn in Jasper's game. Now, he was Stella's lapdog, looking down on the person who once hired him to kill.

"Miss, we're here," the driver said, gently shaking her arm.

Adeline pretended to wake up. "Are we there already?"

"Yes, your friend is waiting outside."

She nodded, paid the fare, and got out. Thomas was waiting, looking impatient.

"Seems Miss Wilson's job is quite demanding," he said as they walked to the hospital entrance. "Falling asleep after such a short trip."

Adeline forced a smile. "Yes, work has been tiring. Not much time for anything else."

"Maybe that's for the best," Thomas replied sarcastically. "Too much thinking can be dangerous, right?"

Adeline bit back a retort and stayed silent.

They entered the hospital, the smell of disinfectant heavy in the air. Getting Mia released was surprisingly easy. Within an hour, they were escorting a frail, gaunt figure out of the ward.

Mia's eyes lit up when she saw Thomas. "Thomas!" she cried, rushing into his arms.

He stiffened, stepping back instinctively. But then, with a sigh, he loosely hugged her. "What are you doing here, Mia? What if I didn't come back?"

Mia wiped her tears, a radiant smile on her face. "I knew you'd come for me." She leaned closer, glancing at Adeline. "See? I told you he'd come back."

Adeline offered a polite smile, her heart heavy with sympathy. Thomas's initial recoil hadn't gone unnoticed. He might be holding Mia, but there was no warmth in his embrace.

Tim and Tom's words echoed in her mind. Thomas was with Mia out of obligation, not love.

She felt a pang of pity for Mia, a pity that mirrored what she felt for her past self.

"Let's get something to eat," Mia suggested, holding Thomas's hand tightly. "We should treat Adeline to a meal. After all, that imposter who took my place did terrible things to her. It's the least we can do."

"Is that so?" Thomas raised an eyebrow, his gaze cold as he looked at Adeline. "What do you say, Miss Wilson? Care to join us for a meal?"

"Of course," Adeline replied, her lips curving into a knowing smile. "We are old acquaintances, after all. It's time we catch up."
