Chapter 425 I'm Useless
Jasper's voice behind her made Adeline freeze up like a deer in headlights.
Vikram, on the other end of the call, was just about to say Luna's name when he caught a faint sound of Jasper's voice.
Vikram's lips curled into a grin. Jasper was really awake!
Taking a deep breath, Vikram asked, "Adeline, did I just hear Jasper?"
Almost like he was answering Vikram, Jasper, lying on the bed, called out again, "Luna."
Vikram was sure now—Jasper was up!
Holding the phone, his voice buzzed with excitement. "Jasper's awake!"
"Adeline, you should go take care of Jasper; we'll catch up later!" Vikram said, not waiting for her reply before hanging up.
Adeline clutched the phone, listening to the dial tone, feeling crushed. It wasn't just Vikram's call; it was Jasper behind her too.
"Luna, water," Jasper's raspy voice came from behind her.
Adeline felt a bitter irony. Because of what Vikram had told her and the video he showed, she had been here taking care of Jasper for three whole days. Even though Blake had surgery tomorrow, she was still here! And what was the result? The first name Jasper called when he woke up was Luna. He kept calling for Luna.
She was right there, but he acted like she was invisible, just calling for Luna. Was Luna that important to him? Important enough to make her three days of care, ignoring Mia's advice, seem like a joke?
"Water," Jasper murmured again.
Adeline turned to see Jasper, pale and gaunt, lying on the hospital bed with his eyes open.
When Jasper saw her, there wasn't much surprise in his eyes.
In a hoarse voice, he repeated, "Water, get me some water."
Adeline frowned, not wanting to get him water.
But despite her thoughts, she found herself walking to the table.
She sighed, irritably poured him a glass of water, and then shoved it at him. "Drink!"
Water splashed onto Jasper's hospital gown, making him frown slightly as he took the glass.
After drinking, he no longer felt thirsty.
He frowned. "Why are you here? Where's Luna?"
Actually, when he was in a coma, he vaguely heard Adeline's voice. He even heard the conversations between the doctor and her, and the call she made to Vikram. But he just couldn't wake up.
Finally, just as Vikram was about to say Luna's name, he struggled to wake up.
He called Luna's name not because she was the first person he wanted to see, but instinctively, in response to Vikram's question, as a subtle reminder to Vikram not to speak recklessly.
He knew how much Adeline despised Luna.
He wasn't sure how Adeline would react when she found out that Blake was going to receive Luna's bone marrow. He couldn't take the risk.
"Funny how that works, huh?" Adeline shot Jasper a cold glance. "You've been in a coma for three days, and your Ms. Jones has been sick for three days. She locks herself in her bedroom at Emerald Crest Estate every day, not even going to work. So I'm here taking care of you, not her."
Jasper's grip on the water glass tightened slightly. "She's sick?"
Adeline closed her eyes, a mocking smile tugging at her lips. "Yeah, she's sick. So sick she can't even come to take care of you!"
Jasper squinted. He could understand Adeline's anger and resentment.
But Jasper didn't respond. He put down the water glass and grabbed the phone on the table.
After being in a coma for so long, his body was still recovering. His hand trembled as he held the phone, almost dropping it several times.
But Jasper, like he didn't even notice, struggled to dial Ryan's number.
"Ryan, I'm up. Get to the hospital now and pick me up. I need to get to Emerald Crest Estate and bring Luna here," Jasper said.
Ryan was stunned for a sec. Thinking about Blake's surgery tomorrow, he got what Jasper meant right away. "Got it, I'll be there ASAP!"
With Ryan's promise, Jasper finally relaxed and set the phone down.
Watching him, Adeline couldn't help but feel a twisted sense of amusement. She had been by his side, taking care of him for three whole days. And this was the thanks she got?
She had planned to tell Jasper about the donor backing out of Blake's surgery. But now, seeing Jasper, who was all about Luna the moment he woke up, she felt it was pointless.
Why bother telling him about Blake?
To him, she didn't exist, her kids didn't exist, only his precious Luna did.
He knew Blake's surgery was tomorrow, yet he didn't mention Blake at all, just Luna.
Jasper was busy picking up Luna for the hospital; he had no time for them.
Adeline took a deep breath. "Since Mr. Foster is awake and heading to Emerald Crest Estate to get Luna, I guess you don't need me here anymore. I have urgent matters to attend to, gotta bounce.."
Jasper said, "Alright."
Watching Adeline's back as she turned to leave, Jasper smiled. "Thanks for taking care of me these past few days. I'll make sure the finance department gives you a raise."
Adeline's hand froze on the doorknob.
After a moment, she laughed. "Thanks for your generosity, Mr. Foster. I do need the money."
With that, she left the room without looking back.
Jasper leaned against the hospital bed, squinting slightly in the direction Adeline had left.
He picked up the phone. "Adeline is heading to your office. Keep her there. Tell her the donor has agreed."
On the other end, Freya was shocked to hear his voice. "Mr. Foster, you're awake!"
"Yeah, I'm going to get Luna now. Keep Adeline there," Jasper said.
Leaving the hospital room, Adeline quickly got into the elevator. She was alone. As the doors closed, tears streamed down her face. Her heart felt like it was being crushed. The pain was so intense that she leaned against the elevator wall, her body weak and sliding down.
Finally, she collapsed to the floor, sitting in the elevator, crying uncontrollably.
When she closed her eyes, all she could see was Jasper waking up and constantly calling for Luna.
She suddenly realized that her care for him over the past few days was just a joke.
Jason always had so many reasons to prove that Jasper cared about her, that he really valued her.
But facing Jasper, she realized that Jason's so-called evidence and reasons were all ridiculous.
The first name Jasper called when he woke up was Luna. It proved that even in his coma, his heart was full of Luna.
What other proof did she need to see who he really cared about?
She cried uncontrollably in the elevator.
But when the doors opened, Adeline's face, except for being a bit red, showed no trace of tears.
She gathered all her emotions, and as soon as she stepped out of the elevator, she saw Blake and Lauren standing hand in hand, waiting for her.
Seeing her, Lauren let go of Blake's hand and ran over. "Mommy."
Lauren said, "I'm so happy. Blake's surgery is scheduled for tomorrow. Soon, he'll be as healthy as me, and we can go find Bennett. We'll be a happy family together!"
Seeing Lauren hugging her, Adeline felt a deep ache in her heart.
She sniffed, squatted down, and tightly hugged Lauren, feeling desperate. "I'm so useless."
