Chapter 579 She Knew Her Child Best
Jasper had been in surgery all night. By the time they wheeled him out at four in the morning, he was still out cold.
Adeline hadn't caught a wink of sleep. Even after they said he was out of the woods, she wouldn't leave his side, not even for a second.
Ryan tried to get her to rest a few times, but she wasn't having it.
She clutched Jasper's hand, her voice all raspy and weak. "Jasper, I used to think no one could love the kids as much as I do."
The Jasper she always thought was heartless and cold had been doing so much for her and the kids behind the scenes.
She'd misunderstood him, blamed him, painted him as the bad guy.
Now, she felt she had to stay by his side, not leaving for a moment. She wanted to be the first person he saw when he woke up, the first voice he heard apologizing.
Otherwise, she couldn't forgive herself.
By ten in the morning, Ryan brought Blake and Lauren over.
Lauren couldn't stop crying when she saw Jasper lying there. "It's all my fault! If I hadn't insisted on doing things my way, Mommy wouldn't have been mad."
She sobbed. "Daddy wouldn't have been hurt!"
She went on. "Yesterday, Daddy said we shouldn't joke about disappearing."
Then she looked up at Adeline, her face streaked with tears. "Mommy, please don't blame Daddy. The plan yesterday was mine."
Adeline bit her lip, gently rubbed Lauren's head with one hand, and held Jasper's hand tightly with the other.
Vikram had said she didn't understand Jasper at all. She'd argued back then.
Now, she realized she really didn't get him.
She didn't see how much he cared for her and the kids, or how well he understood and thought of her.
Blake, who'd been quiet, sighed and looked up at Ryan. "Ryan, I told you this morning to check the beach surveillance. Did you find anything?"
Ryan paused, instinctively glancing at Adeline. "Yeah, we checked."
Blake frowned. "Did you find out who hurt Daddy?"
He'd checked the coastal road cameras before but could only see a few cars, not the people inside.
The shops near the beach had cameras, but they weren't online, so Ryan had to send people to check each one.
Ryan looked at Blake, then at Adeline. After getting a signal from Adeline, Ryan cleared his throat. "No."
Blake noticed the way the adults were acting and frowned a bit. He hesitated before asking, "Is there something Lauren and I shouldn't know?"
Ryan quickly shook his head. "No."
Adeline rubbed her temples, feeling a bit helpless. Sometimes, having smart kids wasn't all it was cracked up to be.
She took a deep breath and patted Blake's head. "Ryan and I will figure out who hurt Jasper. We also need to wait for him to wake up and tell us himself. Right now, you need to take care of Lauren."
Blake pursed his lips and glanced at Lauren, whose eyes were puffy from crying. He sighed, realizing he wouldn't get any more info from Adeline and Ryan.
So he hopped off the chair, reached out, and took Lauren's hand. "Let's go home."
Lauren's voice was hoarse from all the crying, and she shook her head desperately.
"I want to stay here with Mommy and Daddy!"
Blake cut her off, looking serious.
"Mommy is already really tired staying here. If you stay, she'll have to take care of you too. Come home with me."
Lauren rarely saw Blake so serious. She bit her lip, finally stopped crying, and reluctantly grabbed Blake's arm. "Okay, I'll go home with you."
Blake nodded, then turned to Adeline. "Even though I'm only six, I understand a lot. I hope Mommy can treat us like adults and share things with us."
With that, he pulled Lauren and left.
Adeline sat in the chair, watching them leave, her nails digging into her palms.
Once the kids were on the elevator, Ryan finally let out a sigh of relief and sat down next to her. "Mrs. Foster, we actually found the culprit."
Adeline bit her lip and looked at Ryan seriously. "Was it Bennett?"
Ryan was taken aback for a moment, then nodded. "Yeah. He was the only one who approached Mr. Foster."
He added, "The surveillance didn't catch exactly what happened, but before you got there, he was the only one near him."
Ryan sighed. "What's up with Bennett? He and Mr. Foster used to get along pretty well."
Adeline held Jasper's hand, looking at his face, and sighed deeply. "Bennett doesn't remember anything about the past."
Not only did he not remember them, but he also thought of Molly as family.
Adeline believed that even if Bennett did hurt Jasper last night, he must have been forced.
She knew her child best.
