Chapter 404 Otherwise, Bear the Consequences
Adeline arched an eyebrow, a smirk playing on her lips. "Apologize? Really?"
She folded her arms, giving Jasper a look that screamed 'whatever.' "Mr. Foster, care to remind me what the rules are around here at Foster Group?"
She spun on her heel, plopping down in a chair, arms still crossed, eyes locked on Jasper.
"I'm the head honcho of the jewelry design department," Adeline said, "And Luna just waltzed in here yesterday as an intern. What gives her the right to barge into my office?"
The room went dead silent.
Just like a country’s got laws, a company’s got its own set of rules.
Especially in a place like the design department, where secrets werea big deal, you can't just break the rules willy-nilly.
Luna, the newbie intern, storming into Adeline's office? Grounds for getting canned, no question.
But Luna was Jasper's girl. And with Jasper running the show, her antics went unchecked and unspoken.
No one saw it coming when Adeline decided to call out Jasper right to his face.
Everyone held their breath, eyes glued to the drama.
Jasper's face twisted in annoyance. "Luna just started; maybe she doesn't know the rules yet. Why you gotta be so harsh?"
"Harsh?" Adeline chuckled. "Remember yesterday when my assistant Anne got burned by Ms. Jones's coffee and ended up in the hospital, almost losing her job?"
"Why didn't you tell Luna to chill out then, Mr. Foster?"
"Now Luna breaks a clear rule, and you want me to back off?"
Adeline let out a cold laugh, shooting a glance at Luna, who looked like a deer in headlights in Jasper's arms. "Ms. Jones, if you're gonna work here, why didn't you bother learning the rules?"
"Even if you don't know the specifics, you should have some common sense, right?"
"When I'm not here, what makes you think you can just waltz into my office?"
Adeline's words left Luna speechless, biting her lip.
After a beat, Luna, eyes red, finally spoke, "But I saw Ms. Garcia and Robert go into your office."
"Lucia's my lead designer, and Robert's my assistant," Adeline sneered, raising an eyebrow at Luna's pale face. "What do you think you are?"
Luna's words shut the room down again.
It was clear Adeline was stirring the pot because of yesterday's drama.
Sure, Luna was in the wrong, but she was still Jasper's girl.
Jasper owned the whole company. Adeline's bold move made it clear she didn't care about keeping her job.
Everyone kept their heads down, not even daring to breathe too loud.
Jasper held Luna, his face dark as a storm cloud.
His eyes drilled into Adeline, like he could rip her apart any second.
In the tense silence, Luna bit her lip and took a shaky breath. "So, it was my fault?"
She pouted and started sobbing. "Alright, fine, it's all my fault."
"Jasper, don't mess things up with Ms. Wilson because of me."
Luna then looked up at Adeline with those big, sad eyes. "Ms. Wilson, let's just say this was all on me. Don't be mad, and don't hold it against Jasper."
"I just wanted to make things right, not make you hate me."
Luna slipped out of Jasper's arms and bowed to Adeline, who was still sitting in the chair. "I was wrong. I'm sorry. I won't do it again."
Her humble act instantly made a lot of people feel bad for her.
"Adeline's being too harsh. Ms. Jones just started yesterday; she might really not know the ropes yet."
"What do you know? This is because Mr. Foster went after her three assistants yesterday, and now she's taking it out on Ms. Jones."
"Ms. Jones is really pitiful, being so humble and trying to please Adeline."
"Ms. Jones is too kind, which makes her easy to push around."
Even though the whispers weren't loud, Adeline could hear every word.
Luna could hear them too. A flicker of pride flashed in her eyes.
Luna said, "Ms. Wilson, don't worry. I'll do my best not to tick you off ."
Luna's words were like gasoline on a fire for Adeline.
Lucia and Robert exchanged glances, their faces turning sour.
Those words were almost exactly what Adeline had been forced to say by Jasper in the hospital yesterday!
Luna was doing it on purpose!
She was apologizing on the surface, but really, she was mocking Adeline's words from yesterday. It was sarcasm, a reminder, and a provocation!
Adeline shot up from her chair. "Ms. Jones, why make me sound like a tyrant?"
"I'm just pointing out your mistakes and asking you to own up to them."
"Why are you making me sound like some power-abusing tyrant?"
Adeline's words cranked up the tension in the room.
Jasper squinted his eyes. "Adeline, seems like you've forgotten what you went through yesterday."
Adeline's body stiffened a bit.
She squinted her eyes, about to say something, but Luna had already stepped up to Jasper's side.
Luna said, "Jasper, I've already apologized. Let's just drop it."
Luna smiled and held Jasper's hand. "Ms. Wilson is right. I shouldn't have barged into her office. I broke the rules."
"I'll write a self-criticism and read it at the staff meeting."
"Don't let me mess up the company's rules."
After speaking, Luna bit her lip and lowered her voice. "Besides, I don't have much time left. Don't let me mess with your authority at Foster Group."
Luna's mature act made Jasper's eyes flash with a bit of heartache.
It wasn't about feelings; he just felt sorry for her.
Jasper sighed and pulled Luna into his arms. "Let's go."
Luna bit her lip, her voice shy. "It's work hours. Where are you taking me?"
"To my office." After speaking, Jasper seemed to remember something and turned back to look at Adeline coldly. "Be in my office in ten minutes or face the consequences."
