Chapter 56 Find A New Job After You're Discharged
Adeline was pushed back into the intensive care unit.
The intensive care unit was crowded with doctors. A man in patient attire leaned weakly against the head of the bed, anger flickering in his eyes.
"Bring her back to me!"
Though his voice was weak, his tone was resolute and carried a great sense of authority.
Adeline, supported by a nurse, made her way through the crowd. "Mr. Foster, did you summon me?"
Jasper furrowed his brows tightly when he heard the woman's voice. He turned his head, and his icy gaze pierced through her like a dagger. "Was it you who said those words just now?"
"Yes."
"What did you mean?" His eyes emitted flames of fury. "Do you know where Adeline is?"
Adeline looked at his stern face with indifference. "No, I don't know. I only said those things to try and wake you up sooner."
With a raised eyebrow, she continued, "It seems like it worked pretty well."
"You!" He sprang up from the bed. The lines and needles attached to his body were forcefully ripped out.
Jasper lunged forward, grabbed Adeline by the throat, and pinned her against the wall. "You're lying! You know exactly where she is!"
His eyes were aflame. "Tell me, where is she?"
Adeline struggled to breathe, but she still looked at him coldly and smiled. "I don't know. It was just a statement to provoke you to wake up faster. You're too easily agitated."
She glanced at the doctors behind Jasper and remarked coldly, "Are you just going to stand there and watch me get strangled?"
After hesitating for a moment, the doctors finally rushed forward and tried to pull Jasper away.
But nobody expected that they wouldn't be able to retrieve a critically ill patient!
Jasper maintained his previous posture and forcefully pressed Adeline against the wall. "I've told you about my boundaries. I won't allow anyone to joke about Adeline or use her to threaten me! No one can harm Adeline, not even with mere words!"
His voice was aggressive yet domineering.
If Adeline didn't know what had happened six years ago, she might have thought that the man before her was deeply in love with her, almost obsessively so.
But she was, indeed, Adeline.
Whether Jasper liked her or not, she knew it all too well!
So she coldly curled her lips and said, "No one can harm her? What about you, Mr. Foster? Haven't you ever hurt her?"
Her words caused the fire in Jasper's eyes to cool abruptly.
Seeing him silent, Adeline's mocking smile deepened.
"Mr. Foster, my previous words were just meant to provoke you. Adeline was not harmed, and I didn't have any ill intentions. But you keep insisting that I have hurt her. But in my opinion, if Adeline is willing to send Lauren back but never shows up, isn't it because you have hurt her and made her afraid to appear?"
Jasper's hand stopped, and his body stiffened.
Adeline didn't show up because... she still remembered the things he had done to hurt her.
While he was frozen in shock, the doctors behind him pulled him back and pressed him onto the hospital bed.
He didn't look at Adeline again.
He lay on the bed and stared blankly at the ceiling, allowing the doctors to put pillows and tubes into his body.
"Are you alright?"
A nurse came to support Adeline's body. "I was so scared. I thought Mr. Foster was going to kill you."
"Really?" Adeline smiled faintly as she was helped back onto the bed by the nurse and pushed out of the intensive care unit.
"Yes." The nurse sighed, "I heard that Mr. Foster was deeply in love with his ex-wife. I thought it was just a rumor. But he got engaged to her sister. How could their feelings be deep? Now it seems... he really loved his wife to death."
Adeline leaned against the headboard and listened to the nurse's words. A cold smile appeared on her lips.
Perhaps this was the outcome Jasper wanted!
To make everyone believe that he was deeply in love with Adeline.
They had lived the lie for so long that he himself was probably caught up in it, right?
He kept saying that she shouldn't mention Adeline, and that no one should harm her.
But in the beginning, the one who hurt her the most was him.
She closed her eyes and let out a sigh. "How long have I been unconscious?"
"Two days."
"Has anyone visited me recently?"
"Yes." The nurse answered while adjusting the drip for her. "There was a little boy who came with his aunt to visit you."
The nurse glanced at Adeline with a smile and said, "That little boy is quite handsome."
Adeline chuckled softly. "Anyone else?"
"There was also a little girl who came with her great-grandmother to see you."
As the nurse spoke, she inserted the needle into Adeline's vein.
She furrowed her brow. "You said... that little girl was with her great-grandmother?"
"Yes. That great-grandmother seemed fierce, but she had a decent attitude toward the little girl."
Adeline suddenly felt like everything went dark.
Grandma Foster! Has she already found out about Lauren's presence?
It won't be long before the rest of the Foster family finds out too.
By then, even if she completes her plan, it will be difficult to take Lauren away.
Just as Adeline was feeling hopeless, the dissatisfied voice of a young girl echoed through the corridor. "Why do they have to separate them? I like having both my daddy and aunt in the same hospital room. Can't I see them both at once?"
The doctor helplessly said, "Lauren, this is the rule. The woman isn't badly injured anymore, so she has to be moved."
"Hmph!" Lauren's crisp voice resonated in the hallway.
Adeline sighed helplessly.
The little girl should be fine.
That day, she successfully saved her daughter from danger.
In that sense, she was still a capable mother.
"Auntie!" After a while, Lauren, wearing a white dress, quickly ran in from outside. She reached the bedside, extended her small hand, and held Adeline's hand. "Are you feeling better? I heard you woke up. I came straight from Great Grandmother's house to see you!"
Adeline frowned. "Great Grandmother's house?"
"She's been staying with me these past few days."
Grandma Foster's cold and serious voice came from behind. She still wore the necklace Molly gave her. "You saved Lauren. We should thank you, but with your current weak condition, it seems you won't be able to continue taking care of Lauren for some time. I'll have the housekeeper settle your salary. After you're discharged, find a new job."
