Chapter 889 No One Came
Adeline and Hugo's contract signing ceremony went off without a hitch.
To showcase Adeline's skills, Tamsin had invited several major media outlets to photograph Adeline and Hugo.
It was Adeline's first time at such an event. Though she appeared composed, she was inwardly nervous.
Standing next to Hugo and facing the cameras, she instinctively shifted her body slightly away from him.
She couldn't forget Hugo's attempt to take her home last night.
But to her surprise, Hugo let out a chuckle when she moved away.
"You're the one with the ruthless heart and the cunning tactics. If anyone should be afraid of keeping their distance, it's me."
"What are you avoiding? Are you trying to make the reporters think I have feelings for you?"
Hugo lowered his voice so only they could hear.
"But I think you're short-sighted."
"Using that kind of threat to secure this deal with me, but becoming unwelcome at private gatherings in the future—is it worth it?"
Hugo's words left Adeline confused.
She furrowed her brow and whispered.
"What do you mean?"
Seeing her puzzled expression, Hugo sneered.
"Great acting."
Last night, she had sent him edited videos, threatening to send them to his wife.
Now she was pretending to be innocent, asking what he meant?
What could Hugo mean?
She had leverage over him, forcing him to abandon his collaboration with Jasper. Was he not allowed to complain?
Thinking of this, Hugo mimicked Adeline's move, deliberately stepping aside, creating a distance between them that could fit two more people.
Finally, the lengthy and complex signing ceremony ended.
Adeline let out a long breath and returned to the lounge, exhausted, as Verity helped her remove her makeup.
"Where's Tamsin?"
She looked around while getting her makeup removed but couldn't find Tamsin.
Verity smiled gently, removing Adeline's false eyelashes.
"She got a call and left looking quite upset."
"Probably something urgent."
Adeline responded lightly, but Hugo's words from the ceremony kept replaying in her mind.
Hugo said she had threatened him.
But she hadn't done anything.
He also said her heart was more ruthless and her tactics more numerous than his.
She closed her eyes and furrowed her brow.
"Do you know how Tamsin helped me secure Hugo's deal?"
She had clearly offended Hugo last night, yet today he was still willing to do business with her, albeit grudgingly. It was obviously Tamsin's doing.
Verity was silent for a moment, but eventually, she couldn't resist Adeline's persistent questioning.
With a sigh, she revealed that Tamsin had placed a hidden camera and recording device in Adeline's bag the previous night.
However, she didn't mention that Tamsin had ignored Adeline's cries for help, pretending not to hear.
Learning that her first deal was secured through such means left Adeline feeling disheartened.
She had suspected Tamsin's methods were shady, but she hadn't expected hidden cameras and recording devices!
After removing her makeup, Adeline intended to wait for Tamsin in the lounge. But after just two minutes, she received a call from Sebastian, asking when she would visit Linda.
Thinking of Linda, Adeline didn't want to delay and left the lounge immediately.
Turning a corner, she saw Tamsin at the end of the hallway, pacing and talking on the phone, looking anxious.
Adeline checked the time; she still had half an hour before her meeting with Sebastian, so she approached cautiously.
"Daisy, don't think you can threaten me with what happened back then."
As she got closer, she heard Tamsin's frustrated voice.
"I was just trying to please you, saying a few casual words and introducing you to some people."
"What you did afterward has nothing to do with me. Don't try to drag me down!"
After saying this, Tamsin angrily hung up the phone.
Turning around, she saw Adeline standing behind her.
A flicker of panic crossed her face, but she quickly regained her composure.
Tamsin coldly put her phone back in her pocket.
"Why did you remove your makeup?"
"Is the signing over?"
Adeline nodded.
"The contract has been sent back to the Phoebe Group."
"Good."
Tamsin took a deep breath and glanced indifferently at Adeline.
"Weren't you supposed to visit your friend after the signing? Why haven't you left?"
"I have something to ask you."
Adeline took a deep breath, her gaze fixed on Tamsin.
"Last night's party—you told me it was just a private gathering with Hugo and his friends, so I could get to know Hugo, right?"
Tamsin furrowed her brow, her eyes darkening as she looked at Adeline.
"What do you know?"
From Tamsin's reaction, Adeline didn't need her answer to know the truth.
Jasper hadn't lied to her.
Tamsin had known all along what kind of event last night's party was but had deceived her into thinking it was a regular private gathering!
Tamsin had even paid someone to tell Allan that Adeline wanted to attend such a debauched party.
That's why Tamsin had placed hidden cameras and recording devices in her bag beforehand.
Thinking of this, Adeline felt a surge of anger.
She glared at Tamsin.
"You said you wanted to help me in business, but you were just using me?"
"If I had known what kind of party it was, I would never have gone!"
Tamsin glanced at her indifferently and laughed coldly.
"That's precisely why I kept it from you. If you knew, you wouldn't have gone."
"You know too much, and it ruins things."
Adeline's brow furrowed deeply.
"But I have the right to choose not to go!"
Tamsin laughed coldly, stepping closer to Adeline.
"Not go?"
"Without my methods, do you think you could have secured this deal from the Torres family and Jasper with just your looks?"
"In the business world, countless women sacrifice themselves for their companies. What makes you so special?"
"And I didn't plan for you to sacrifice yourself, just to record useful information."
"I arranged for a dozen bodyguards to patrol outside the hotel to protect you, didn't I?"
Mentioning the bodyguards made Adeline even angrier.
"Yes, you did send bodyguards to protect me."
"But when I called for help, not one of them came!"
