Chapter 52 She's Healthier Than You

After hanging up the phone, Adeline rested on the bed for a while and unknowingly fell asleep.

She had a dream.

In the dream, she was experiencing the scene of meeting Jasper for the first time.

It was a sunny afternoon in spring.

She sat under a cherry blossom tree, holding a sketchpad to paint, and after a gust of cherry blossoms fell, she saw the young man in white clothes.

His face was profound, with well-defined features, and his white clothes outlined him as cool and noble.

He sat under a tree in the distance, reading a book, his eyebrows occasionally furrowing and relaxing.

Unable to resist, Adeline painted him into her artwork.

"Not bad."

When she was adding the final touches, a deep voice suddenly sounded in her ears.

Adeline was startled. Her hand trembled and smudged the young man's face black.

She didn't know whether she should stand up and greet him or rescue the drawing in her arms.

At this moment, the man behind her laughed lightly. "You made me look ugly in the painting."

His long, slender fingers took the pencil from her hand. He smoothed the drawing paper and left a string of numbers.

"I'll give you a chance to fix it. When you're done, remember to contact me. I'll buy this painting."

The girl pursed her lips and turned to look at him. "What should I call you?"

The man curled his lips. "Call me Jasper."

"Jasper..."

Adeline repeated the man's name, awakening from her dream.

The sky outside had already darkened, and the dim moonlight shone through the window, evoking a sense of melancholy.

Tears welled up in the corners of her eyes. Adeline sniffed and wiped away the tears. She was about to get out of bed when suddenly, with a snap, the light in the room was switched on.

She jumped in surprise and looked closely, only to find Jasper sitting on the chair by the door. The man lazily leaned on the chair, crossing his long legs.

Under the light, his sharply defined face appeared even more profound.

He stared at her coldly. "Having a dream?"

Adeline quickly snapped out of her sadness and wiped her face, tidying up the teardrop at the corner of her eye. "Well, I had a nightmare."

Jasper squinted his eyes, a cold smile tugging at the corners of his lips. "Did you dream about me?"

Adeline glared at him and swiftly got up from the bed. "No. I have nothing to do with you, so why would I dream about you?"

She was about to open the door and leave, but Jasper stood up and blocked her way.

"If you didn't dream about me, why would you call my name?"

Jasper realized that he was unable to see through her. While she was distant and estranged when awake, in her dreams, she affectionately called him Jasper.

Sometimes, he felt like she was just like those other women who always wanted to get close to him. But more often, she made him feel alienated and distant, as if she didn't want to have any relationship with him at all.

"Is that so?" Adeline felt a bit flustered inside, but her expression remained indifferent. "You must have misheard."

After saying that, she raised her hand to remove his arm. "It's my fault for sleeping for so long during work hours. You can consider deducting my salary. But in the future, please don't enter my room without permission.

"It's very impolite. Even if I am a servant, I don't want anyone entering my room casually.

"Second," she glanced meaningfully at Jasper and said, "if Miss Collins finds out that you were in my room, I'm afraid it would be hard to explain."

Jasper lifted her chin with one finger, his gaze slightly cold. "Do you care about her opinion?"

"It's you, Mr. Foster, whom I care about." Adeline's face remained calm. "Regardless of what she says, she is your fiancée, after all."

"But I won't have a fiancée anymore." Jasper interrupted her. "I plan to break off the engagement with Molly at my grandmother's birthday banquet in three days."

Adeline looked at him in shock. "Break off the engagement?"

Why would he want to break it off?

Is it because of Lauren?

Or is it because he knows Adeline is still alive?

But six years ago, they were willing to go to any lengths to kill her in order to be together.

This seems a bit illogical.

Adeline bit her lip and glanced at Jasper. "Is it... because of me?"

During this period of time, Jasper intentionally or unintentionally had physical contact with her.

So if it's not Lauren, it can only be because of Jasper's interest in her.

Jasper chuckled lightly. "What do you think?"

He meant that Adeline was being presumptuous.

But to Adeline's ears, this sounded ambiguous, no matter how she interpreted it.

Did he just admit it?

Adeline's heart was beating fast.

On one hand, she was glad that Jasper was interested in her.

In this way, even though everything deviated from her original plan, the final outcome would still be the same.

But on the other hand, she didn't expect everything to happen so quickly.

Jasper changing his mind about Molly so quickly made her feel disgusted to some extent.

This man was still unfaithful and disloyal when it came to relationships!

Recalling the scene when she first saw him and was attracted to him in her dream, Adeline felt a bit nauseous.

She let go of his hand, turned around, and walked out the door. "I'm going to cook for Lauren!"

Jasper narrowed his eyes and watched her as she left, but he didn't catch up or say anything.

...

Early the next morning, right after Adeline finished cooking, her phone was flooded with explosive news notifications:

"Grandma Foster admitted to the hospital on the eve of her 80th birthday."

"Famous actress Molly waits outside the operating room!"

She furrowed her brow. After a while, she heard hurried footsteps on the stairs.

Jasper, dressed neatly, came downstairs with a serious expression and headed straight for the door.

At the door, he paused, turned his head, and said, "Don't take Lauren out today. Stay at home and keep an eye on her."

Adeline pursed her lips. She knew she shouldn't care, but...

Unable to hold back any longer, Adeline asked, "Is Grandma alright?"

Jasper chuckled lightly. "What could possibly be wrong with her? She's healthier than you."

Adeline frowned. "But the news said..."

"She's faking it." The man lowered his head and glanced at the time. "The butler from the old mansion called me yesterday and said they were in the midst of rescuing her. It has been eight hours since then. She should be awake now. It's tough for her to lie on that hard hospital bed for so long."
