Chapter 544 What Kind of Husband Are You?

As Jasper stared at her, totally out of it, Adeline managed a weak, pale smile. "What's up, Mr. Foster? Isn't this what you wanted? For me to step up and go back with you?"

Jasper wanted her back in that dark room, enduring all that pain.

He paused, his voice rough. "What happened to you?"

Jasper knew she'd be here, but he didn't expect her to look like this.

Just a few days ago, she had a rosy glow and bright eyes. Now, she looked so fragile, like she could break any second.

He thought she'd be happy after David and Linda rescued her.

On the drive from Radiance Springs to Neon City, Jasper had been fuming, thinking she was a mom who only cared about herself, not her kids. She had to know the kids had kidnapped Evelyn and sent her to the hospital in her place. How could she be so chill letting the kids face the world's judgment?

But now, the Adeline in front of him was nothing like he imagined. She was thin, pale, and weak, like glass ready to shatter.

Adeline forced a smile, looking up at Jasper's sharp features, her smile bitter and sad. "Didn't you expect this, Mr. Foster? You followed Dr. Smith's advice and sent me to that place."

She showed the wounds on her arms and the burns from electrodes hidden under her hair.

"Electroshock, needles, physical stimulation, sedative injections," she repeated, her face cold and blank.

Finally, she raised her left hand, missing a pinky finger, and smiled at Jasper. "Didn't you say my hands were beautiful, Mr. Foster? So they smashed my left pinky with a hammer."

Her tone was calm, like she was telling someone else's story.

Jasper's eyes widened in shock. "Your finger!"

Wasn't it broken by herself?

He remembered the X-ray David had sent him yesterday.

Jasper instinctively turned to David, who nodded.

Jasper took a step back.

How could this happen? How could Adeline suffer like this in the hospital? He had told Gary to take good care of her! Gary even promised to assign more staff to look after her!

"They said for each day I stayed there, they'd smash another finger," Adeline laughed bitterly. "Do you know what I was thinking then, Mr. Foster?"

Under Jasper's shocked and conflicted gaze, Adeline chuckled. "I was thinking, it's lucky you complimented my hands instead of any other part of me."

"Otherwise, otherwise..." Adeline tried to say more, but something rose in her throat.

After a violent cough, she coughed up blood and collapsed to the ground.

"Adeline!" Jasper couldn't hold back anymore. He rushed to her, holding her tight.

David frowned. "The emergency room's on the first floor!"

Jasper clung to Adeline like she was the most precious thing in the world and headed for the elevator.

Both elevators were stuck on the first floor. They were on the fifteenth.

Without a second thought, Jasper carried Adeline and bolted for the stairwell.

Adeline weakly murmured, "Let me go."

She was so drained and in so much pain that even her struggles were feeble.

"I'm not letting go," Jasper said, holding her tight as he raced down the stairs. "I've got three new medical teams lined up. Come back with me, and we'll get you re-evaluated. If Dr. Smith's diagnosis was wrong, he's gonna pay!"

Listening to his heartbeat, Adeline managed a bitter smile.

"Three medical teams," she croaked, each word a struggle. "You still want to rely on them to decide if I'm crazy, huh? You still don't believe me."

Her words made Jasper freeze. Did he not believe her?

He remembered what Evelyn had said at Radiance Springs Mental Hospital. "Seems like Mr. Foster only cares about results, not reality. You'd rather trust cold diagnoses than the people around you. Can't you tell who's sick and who isn't?"

Jasper's heart sank.

He wanted to believe Adeline.

Taking a deep breath, he lowered his voice. "You're too weak; stop talking."

Adeline gave a bitter smile and nodded. "Okay."

What was the point of talking to someone who didn't trust her? Even if Jasper was holding her now, in his heart, she was still a madwoman who'd torment Blake and herself.

Adeline was taken to the emergency room.

The treatment lasted six hours.

"The patient vomited blood due to emotional stress," the doctor sighed after the treatment. "She's been through too much torture in a short time. Her finger wasn't treated in time, leading to an infection. Even though it was amputated, the inflammation hasn't subsided. Combined with emotional stress, it led to this."

The doctor looked up at Jasper with a cold stare. "Who are you to her?"

Jasper was silent for a moment. "I'm her husband."

"Husband?" The doctor looked at Jasper like he was a monster, his voice just as cold. "What kind of husband are you? Do you know how painful it is to have a finger smashed?"

He sighed. "I've seen countless patients, but she's the first in such a condition; her bones shattered into tiny fragments, with no hope of rejoining them!"

After closing the medical record, the doctor turned and left. "I've seen irresponsible husbands, but never one as negligent as this!"

Jasper stood there, his face dark and grim.

After a while, he took out his phone. "Take Gary to me; I have questions for him!"
