Chapter 426 You Really Don't Put Anyone at Ease
Adeline's words hit Lauren and Blake like a ton of bricks.
They shot each other confused looks, trying to figure out why Adeline dropped that bombshell out of nowhere.
Blake, leaning his skinny frame against the wall, furrowed his brow. "Mom, is there something wrong with the bone marrow transplant?"
Bullseye.
Adeline closed her eyes, let out a heavy sigh, and nodded.
She let go of Lauren and said, dead serious, "The donor bailed at the last minute. Doesn't wanna go through with the surgery. I'm heading to see the doc now. No matter what, I gotta talk to this volunteer tonight."
The donor had been cool with giving up their bone marrow for free, so they were down to help Blake.
Maybe something personal came up for the donor.
Besides crying in the elevator, Adeline had made up her mind.
It was already past seven, and the doc said if the donor didn't show by nine, tomorrow's surgery was a no-go.
Adeline wasn't sure she could get the donor's info and convince them to come to the hospital in just two hours.
But luckily, Blake's condition wasn't super bad right now.
As long as she knew who the donor was, she could talk to them.
No matter what issues they had, she'd do whatever it took to help them out, making sure they could donate without any hassle. She'd give anything, as long as it meant saving Blake's life.
The surgery could wait. But she couldn't skip out on convincing this volunteer, Blake's only shot at survival.
After hearing Adeline's plan, Blake was quiet for a bit.
Finally, he forced a smile. "Thanks, Mom."
He walked up to Adeline and gave her a gentle hug. "No matter what happens, I'm grateful to be your son."
Blake's words made Adeline's eyes well up again.
She couldn't stay with Blake and Lauren any longer, so she asked a nearby nurse to take them back to the ward, then headed solo to Freya's office.
When Adeline pushed the door open, Freya had just put down her phone.
Seeing Adeline, Freya quickly stood up. "Adeline, I was just about to look for you. About Blake's surgery tomorrow."
Adeline had come to terms with the donor backing out.
She took a deep breath. "Let's push tomorrow's surgery. Since the donor's not willing..."
Freya paused, then smiled and cut her off, "I was just about to tell you. I just got word the donor agreed to go ahead with the donation. Our people are already picking themup. They'll be at the hospital before nine. Don't worry."
Adeline was floored.
The string of bad news today had almost broken her. When she finally got some good news, it felt unreal.
Adeline bit her lip and looked seriously at Ms. Bishop. "You're not messing with me, right?"
Freya gave her a serious look. "What kind of doctor would joke about this with a patient's family? The donor agreed to come. But they have one request and hope you'll cooperate."
Adeline paused and quickly asked, "What request? Can I do it? What do they need me to do?"
Seeing her nervous look, Freya shook her head. "It's simple. The donor wants you and your family and friends to stop asking about and digging into her identity, both now and after the bone marrow transplant."
Freya patted Adeline's shoulder. "Can you handle that?"
Adeline furrowed her brow. "That's it?"
She thought the donor must've had some huge problem to back out today. Maybe money troubled. She was even ready to hit up Mia for a loan again. But all the donor wanted was for her to stop looking for them?
"Yep." Freya nodded, like she knew Adeline's reaction was coming. "The donor knows you were snooping around, so this is a warning."
Adeline paused. "Okay, got it."
She'd wanted to find the donor to show her gratitude. But she not only found the wrong person but almost messed things up big time.
Now that the donor had made this request, she wouldn't keep searching.
Seeing her reaction, Freya finally relaxed. "Alright, you can head back now. Blake's got surgery tomorrow. As his mom, you should be with him."
Adeline nodded and turned to leave.
Back in the ward, Lauren and Blake were still gloomily talking about their plans for tomorrow.
Adeline, bursting with joy, rushed to hug Lauren and Blake. "Problem solved! The surgery's on for tomorrow!"
Blake and Lauren exchanged a look of shock, both so excited they couldn't speak for a moment.
Finally, Lauren suggested Adeline buy ice cream to celebrate.
Of course, it was ice cream for her and Adeline. Blake needed to prep for tomorrow's surgery, so he had to avoid junk food.
Adeline agreed and happily headed downstairs to the supermarket.
She not only bought ice cream for Lauren but also asked Mia to find the best computer and keyboard in Radiance Springs, planning to surprise Blake after his surgery.
As Adeline was carrying the ice cream back to the hospital entrance, a black car zoomed past her.
The car stopped at the hospital entrance.
The door opened, and Jasper got out from the back seat, walked around the car, and picked up Luna, who was wearing a white dress.
Jasper was still in the striped hospital gown Adeline had seen him in while taking care of him these past few days.
Plus, when he picked up Luna, Adeline clearly saw beads of sweat on Jasper's forehead.
She narrowed her eyes and sneered inwardly, 'For Luna, he'll do anything.'
Even though Jasper had just woken up from a three-day coma and was still a patient, he was pretending to be fine, carrying Luna out of the car.
She couldn't believe Luna's so-called illness could be worse than Jasper's, who'd been in a coma for three days.
As Adeline stood watching from a distance, Luna turned her head.
Their eyes met.
Luna gave Adeline a smug smile, then turned her gentle gaze back to Jasper. "Jasper, why don't you put me down? I can walk."
Jasper said, "Your body just recovered. Don't push yourself."
Holding her, he spoke in a low, indifferent voice. "I'm fine. Your health is more important."
With that, he carried her into the hospital. "You didn't even go to the hospital when you were sick, just toughing it out at home. You really make me worry."
Adeline stood there, watching Jasper carry Luna away, a cold smile forming on her lips.
She thought, 'Jasper is really pathetic. And I'm even more pathetic.'
