Chapter 806 Treating Her as a Pawn
The moment Adeline and Linda showed up, the hallway went dead quiet.
For the first time, Brandon's usually calm and indifferent eyes showed panic and confusion.
He cleared his throat, "Adeline. How much did you hear of what Daisy and I were talking about just now?"
Adeline smiled, but it didn't reach her eyes. "Brandon, I'm asking you, is what you just said true? Did you really ruin my face?"
Years ago, after the car accident, she was in a coma for a long time. When she woke up, the doctor told her that her face was disfigured. She never believed it. She clearly remembered that when Thomas's truck hit her, it was her leg that got injured. Later, when Thomas kicked her into the sea, it shouldn't have been her face that got hurt. So why was her face disfigured?
She had secretly removed all the bandages from her face when no one was looking. When she saw her face covered in scars, she screamed in horror. What kind of face was this? Was it still her face? The dense scars looked like they had been cut with a knife. After screaming, she quickly rewrapped the bandages. Even so, every time she woke up from a nightmare, she would dream of that terrifying face under the bandages.
She always thought the disfigurement was caused by the car accident. She never suspected anyone else, let alone Brandon. But now, Brandon had just told Daisy that he was the one who used a knife to ruin her face.
Adeline's questioning made both Daisy and Brandon breathe a sigh of relief. It seemed she only heard the part about the disfigurement and not the part about Patty's background.
Brandon sighed, walked over, and gently patted Adeline's shoulder, lowering his voice. "Adeline, don't you know me by now? I was just saying that to appease Daisy. Don't take it seriously."
Adeline frowned and pulled Brandon's hand off her shoulder. "I really don't know you anymore."
She used to think she understood Brandon, but now she couldn't tell what kind of person he was.
Brandon's hand hung in the air. He sighed and continued in a low voice, "Adeline, we've known each other for so many years... Are you really going to say you don't know me because of one sentence?" He laughed softly. "If you say that, I'll be heartbroken."
Seeing this, Daisy clenched her fists at her sides. The way Brandon looked at Adeline and the gentle tone he used with her were things Daisy, his fiancée, had never experienced.
Why did Adeline get all the good things in the world? Why did Molly's crush, Jasper, like Adeline? And why did Brandon, whom Daisy liked, also like Adeline?
Taking a deep breath, Daisy stepped forward, grabbed Brandon's hand, and pulled him behind her. She looked at Adeline with cold eyes. "What Brandon said is true! He was the one who disfigured you!"
The hallway fell silent again.
Brandon frowned and pushed Daisy aside. "What nonsense are you talking about?"
"Nonsense?" Daisy was pushed so hard that she hit the wall. She bit her lip, her nails digging into her palms. Brandon and she were getting married in three days! They were about to become a family! But now, Brandon was pushing her aside for Adeline, making her hit the wall!
Feeling wronged, angry, and resentful, Daisy gritted her teeth and stepped forward again, blocking Brandon and Adeline. "Adeline, if you don't believe me, think about the scars on your face! Could a car accident cause those kinds of injuries? Don't you have a friend who's a plastic surgeon? Ask her! Once you know the truth, you'll understand!"
"Daisy, you're crazy!" Brandon rushed forward, covering Daisy's mouth with his hand. He looked at Adeline apologetically. "Daisy has postpartum depression. She's talking nonsense. Don't believe her."
Adeline stood still and laughed. After a while, she looked up at Brandon. "Why?"
Why ruin her face and give her a new one? Was her old face too ugly? Even if it was, it was still her face. What right did Brandon have to destroy it and give her a new one? Not to mention the pain she endured from the surgeries.
Adeline had always thought her disfigurement was due to the car accident and felt grateful to Brandon for funding her surgeries. She worked hard to repay him, feeling she owed him a great debt. But now, it was all a joke.
Her face was ruined by Brandon?
"Probably because your old face looked exactly like Zara's."
A deep male voice broke the tense atmosphere in the hallway. Adeline closed her eyes. She didn't need to look to know who it was.
"Jasper!"
Brandon, still covering Daisy's mouth, turned and saw Jasper stepping out of another elevator. He frowned. "You dare come here?"
"Why wouldn't I?" Jasper smirked and glanced behind him. David, dressed in white, stood there, playing with a switchblade. Feeling Brandon's gaze, David looked up and gave a wicked smile. "Whether it's a fight or a shootout, I'm game."
Brandon hesitated. For the past six months, Oceancrest City has had two legends. In the business world, Jasper was unstoppable, making him untouchable. In the underworld, David had unified all the gangs. The saying in Oceancrest City was: "Don't mess with Jasper and David."
Now, with Jasper and David here, Brandon had to think twice before making a move.
"Why would Brandon ruin Adeline's face just because it looked like her mom's?" Linda finally spoke up, voicing her confusion.
"It's simple," Jasper smirked, walking over to stand protectively in front of Adeline, his cold eyes on Brandon. "Because if anyone from the Phoebe family saw Adeline's original face, they'd recognize her and take her back. So he had to change her appearance and keep her hidden until he needed to use the Phoebe family."
Jasper's words made Adeline's heart tighten. So from the beginning, Brandon had only seen her as a pawn, hadn't he?
