Chapter 794 Wake Up Early
Adeline was missing.
Howard was finally worried.
He anxiously grabbed the shoulder of a nearby servant.
"Where's Adeline? Where is she?"
It was pouring outside. A woman who had just given birth was leaving the house so casually—what if something happened to her?
The servant's voice trembled as they were shaken.
"Miss Wilson... she went out."
The servant pointed towards the back door. "That way."
Before the words were fully out, Oliver kicked the door open and ran in that direction.
Howard gave the servant a helpless glare and hurried after him.
Once they reached the backyard, they saw Adeline.
She hadn't gone far.
In her arms, she wasn't holding a small bundle anymore, but the lifeless body of her baby.
Adeline was draped in Jasper's black coat, walking very slowly.
Beside her, Jasper, wearing only dress pants and a shirt, was holding a large black umbrella over her.
They walked in the heavy rain, Jasper getting soaked while Adeline remained almost completely dry.
The rain continued to pour.
The only sounds were the rain and their footsteps, along with Adeline's soft murmurs to the dead baby in her arms.
"Don't be scared, baby. Mommy's taking you home."
"The rain will stop soon, and when the sun comes out, there will be a rainbow. Have you ever seen a rainbow, baby?"
"You will see one. The rainbow is here to send you off..."
Adeline's words sounded like the ramblings of a madwoman, or perhaps the self-comfort of someone trying to stay sane.
Howard felt a deep ache watching Adeline's back. He wanted to go to her, to pull her back to reality, but Oliver stopped him.
"If you don't want her to hate you, don't do anything."
Oliver glanced at Jasper beside Adeline, his voice hoarse.
"Right now, he's the only one who can be with her like this."
The child was Adeline's, but also Jasper's.
The pain of losing a child was something they both had to bear.
Howard opened his mouth to say something, but ended up just sighing heavily.
Father and son stood silently under the eaves, watching Jasper hold the umbrella and walk slowly with Adeline into the rain until their figures disappeared.
Only then did Oliver turn to Howard.
"Daisy had her baby?"
Howard nodded. "A girl. She looks like Brandon."
Oliver smirked, glancing at Howard's graying hair.
"With this child, the relationship between the Phoebe family and the Torres family is more than just an engagement."
"When is Brandon planning to marry Daisy?"
Howard sighed. "He said that after the baby is a month old, during the birthday celebration."
He glanced in Adeline's direction.
"Brandon didn't know about Adeline's situation. He wanted me to make sure she attended the celebration."
"But looking at Adeline now... how could she possibly go?"
He didn't think Adeline could forget the pain of losing her child in just a month.
"Brandon is really considerate," Oliver said, his lips curling into a mocking smile.
"Adeline can't go, but I can."
Howard glared at him coldly. "You? You better not go. Nothing good will come of it!"
As they were talking, Howard's phone rang. It was Brandon.
Howard frowned and answered. A soft female voice came through.
"Dad, it's Daisy."
"It's late. Brandon told me to rest, but I can't stop worrying about Adeline."
"Did Adeline have her baby? Is it a boy or a girl?"
"Is it another set of twins like last time?"
Daisy's questions left Howard at a loss for words. He hesitated. "Adeline's baby..."
Seeing him struggle, Oliver took the phone, his voice cold. "Adeline's baby wasn't as lucky as yours. It didn't make it."
"Her baby died."
On the other end, Daisy's lips curled into a smile. She knew Adeline's baby was gone... after all, it was her doing. But even with a smile on her face, she feigned sadness.
"That's such a shame. I thought our babies being born on the same day was fate. They might have even gotten married when they grew up."
Oliver chuckled. "Adeline's baby was a girl, too. Marriage is out of the question, but they could have been sisters."
"Just as long as they weren't scheming against each other."
His words were loaded with meaning. Daisy pretended not to understand.
"Oliver, you always joke around."
She took a deep breath. "It's late, and Brandon is urging me to rest. I'll go to bed now."
"Please give Adeline my condolences."
"She's still young. She can have more children."
"Next time, she should choose the father more carefully."
She hung up before Oliver could respond.
Oliver handed the phone back to Howard with a cold smile. Howard, who had only heard Oliver's side of the conversation, couldn't help but scold him.
"Daisy called to check on Adeline out of concern."
"Why did you have to be so harsh?"
Oliver sneered. "I talk harshly. What are you going to do about it?"
Howard's eyes widened in anger. "You!"
Tall and imposing, Oliver ignored his father's anger and waved him off. "I'm going to see Mom."
After arranging for Adeline to stay here, Oliver had also brought Zara over. Zara was now in a small house next to Adeline's. He had hoped Adeline could talk to Zara when she was bored.
They hadn't seen each other in over twenty years. Even though Zara was still in a coma, spending time together was good.
But he hadn't expected Zara to hear about Adeline's ordeal... who knew if she could feel her daughter's pain...
When Oliver entered Zara's room, he saw tears on her pillow. He sighed and took her hand.
"You heard everything, didn't you? You felt it, right?"
"If you really care about Adeline, wake up soon."
As he spoke, Zara's fingers twitched slightly, unnoticed by Oliver.
