Chapter 49 Stay Away from Adeline

Adeline coldly looked at the check. "One million dollars. That's a lot of money."

"Of course," Grandma Foster sneered, "Quit while you're ahead!"

"True." Adeline put the check in her bag and said, "But I'm afraid the fake necklace on your neck isn't worth a million dollars."

The two words "fake necklace" made Grandma Foster pause for a moment. Then she laughed coldly and said, "You're quite cunning. You deliberately called the necklace fake because I said my future daughter-in-law gave it to me, right?"

She rolled her eyes, showing nothing but contempt. "You, a lowly servant, can't even tell what's real and what's fake. My future daughter-in-law is a respectable person. She would never buy counterfeit goods. It's just that you have no eye for quality!"

After saying that, Grandma Foster glared at Adeline menacingly. "Since you've taken the money, I'll consider it as your agreement. Find a reason to leave Blue Bay within three days! Or else, don't blame me for being impolite!"

With these words, Grandma Foster stood up and, supported by her maid, left with a flourish.

Adeline sat in her chair, glancing at her receding figure. "Grandma Foster, don't forget to pay the bill. This place is too expensive, and a maid like me can't afford it."

Grandma Foster paused for a moment at the doorway. "How disgraceful!"

After saying that, she turned around and walked away briskly.

After the old woman left, Adeline sat alone in the restaurant and ordered herself a cup of Darjeeling tea. It took her half an hour to finish it.

By the time she returned to Blue Bay, it was already dark outside.

As soon as she opened the villa door, she saw Jasper and Lauren sitting together on the couch.

The man was engrossed in his documents while Lauren played with her little puzzle on the carpet.

Upon seeing Adeline, Lauren quickly set down her puzzle and rushed over. "Auntie, where did you go? I was so worried!"

Adeline crouched down and smiled as she stroked the girl's head. "Auntie is fine. I just went to make some money."

"Make money?" Lauren's eyes widened in confusion. "How?"

"Well, there are a lot of people around your dad who are willing to pay me," she said with a smile, trying to reassure Lauren. "Do you want to go upstairs and play? I have something to discuss with your dad."

Lauren pursed her lips in disagreement. "I think you should discuss upstairs."

She had worked so hard to piece her puzzle together on the living room carpet. What if it got scattered while going upstairs?

Adeline glanced at the little girl helplessly. "You should go upstairs."

There were some things she didn't want Lauren to hear, but she wanted the other servants in the villa to be aware. So letting Lauren go upstairs while she stayed with Jasper in the living room was the best choice.

However, Lauren had no idea what Adeline was thinking. She insisted on protecting her puzzle. "No! You two go upstairs!"

"Let's go to my study," Jasper said.

He closed his documents, stood up gracefully, and walked toward the stairs.

Adeline sighed helplessly.

Although Jasper was a scumbag, there was no denying that he doted on their daughter.

She lowered her head and looked at Lauren with resignation.

The little girl smiled proudly at her and pushed her with her small, tender hand. "Let's go to the study with dad!"

Helplessly, Adeline followed the man into the study.

The door to the study was closed.

The cold and arrogant man leaned back elegantly in his chair, his icy gaze sweeping over her face. "Speak."

Adeline took a deep breath. She took out the check from her bag and placed it on the table.

"Mr. Foster, it seems that the salary you give me is a bit too little. I'm requesting a raise."

The man's well-defined fingers lifted the check.

"A raise?"

"Yes." Adeline met his gaze, her eyes serious. "After all, in the eyes of the Foster family, I am worth a million dollars. So how about a raise? It's not too much, right?" Adeline asked.

"It's definitely not too much." Jasper put down the check and leaned back, finding a more comfortable position to look at Adeline. "So you took this check just to ask me for a raise, right?"

Jasper's strong presence made her feel like she was being looked down upon.

Adeline nodded. "Of course."

She remained calm and composed. "My goal is simple. I just want Mr. Foster to give me a raise. This one-million-dollar check is too much for a maid like me. I feel unworthy of it."

Jasper stood up and walked toward her. "Is it only about this?"

"Of course."

He reached out and used his two fingers to lift her chin, forcing her to look into his deep and mysterious eyes. "You don't want to accept this money, not because you feel unworthy, but because you don't want to leave me. Isn't that right?"

His voice was low and pleasing, carrying a seductive magnetism.

Even though Adeline had long given up on Jasper, his voice still made her heart flutter.

She turned her face away, refusing to look at him. "Mr. Foster, you know that my intentions are not focused on you."

He chuckled lightly and pressed Adeline against the wall.

His body was burning against hers. "You're not focused on me, but that doesn't mean you don't have any thoughts about me."

Adeline's heart skipped a beat the moment Jasper touched her.

It must be because she hadn't been in contact with a man for too long that she reacted so strongly to his touch.

"Your face is flushed." The man's large hand held onto her waist, his enchanting voice ringing in her ear. "You just can't bear to leave me."

Adeline closed her eyes and struggled, but she couldn't break free.

It seemed like he had learned his lesson from the slap she gave him yesterday, as today he held onto her tightly, leaving her with no room to struggle.

She bit her lip and tried to calm her wildly beating heart. "Mr. Foster, you misunderstood. You should know that I came to your side with my own purpose, not for the money.

"Haven't you investigated me? When I was abroad, I was a jewelry designer with a starting annual salary of tens of millions of dollars. I really don't think much of this one million dollars check."

The woman's words made Jasper pause momentarily.

After a while, he frowned and let go of her. "Adeline, what exactly is your purpose?"

"When the time comes, you'll naturally find out." Adeline, having survived a disaster, walked briskly toward the door, smiling at him. "I promised you that I wouldn't harm Lauren and I wouldn't defame your ex-wife. You shouldn't ask me any more questions."

With that, she swiftly turned and left.

The study door closed.

Jasper stood there, watching her leave.

The warmth from her waist seemed to linger on the palm of his hand.

He seemed to have done something he shouldn't have done to her.

He turned, sat back in his chair, and opened the folder saved on his computer. His eyes were filled with complexity as he flipped through Adeline's photos one by one.

He shouldn't have.

He shouldn't have done something like that while Adeline was still alive.

After a short while, he picked up his phone. "Ryan, bring the files to the study. I'll be working overtime."

Half an hour later, Ryan brought the files over. "Sir, what are you..."

Jasper ignored him and started looking through the files on his own.

There was a faint trace of lipstick on the sleeve of his white shirt.

Ryan recognized it as the lip color Adeline had worn that day.

He understood everything. The reason why the master tortured himself by working overnight was also because he violated Adeline that night.

And it happened again today.

Is he using overtime as a way to punish himself?

Thinking about this, Ryan sighed heavily. "Sir, how about...I find a new maid for Miss Lauren? Keeping Adeline away from you might be better."
